Midnight Rider Dream Sequence

Variety has more footage, including footage of the band look alikes.
A ton of stuff jumps out at me from this.
1. I think it's nuts that they released this footage for a variety of reasons. I know the Miller case is over and he has many other things to do than stop leaked footage of a project that isn't happening, but usually footage gets filed away for quite some time (especially a project that resulted in so many law suits) before it sees the light of day. Odd that it was edited together and released at all, considering this is footage from a crime scene.
2. William Hurt always seemed far too erudite to play Gregg. The last thing that comes to mind when someone mentions William Hurt is "long-haired rock 'n roller". This footage confirms for me he probably wasn't right for the part of Gregg and this was going to be another one of Randall Miller's "let's play cheap dress up" movies like CBGB. The make up on the 1969-era band looks like someone captured their stunt doubles - though I know it was just a rehearsal. And yes, Dickey is playing left handed - maybe they were going to fix that in post.
3. It's impossible to judge footage that caused a person's life rationally. As off as much of this mostly raw footage is, I wish wasn't happening for completely different reasons. Obviously.
4. Wyatt Russell definitely has his dad's chin.

I know they would've (could've) done a lot in post to enhance these raw clips, but for me the actors just don't look like their intended characters. William Hurt looks like Gandalf with tattoos. Wyatt Russell looks like a generic southern redneck, or more like someone dressing like Duane at a Halloween party. As much as I hate the circumstances that caused it, I'm almost glad this one didn't happen.
One day, a third party might produce a definitive film about the Allman Brother's Band. For me, a film like this would be more honest than a view produced largely from the memoirs of a central character. Let someone else build your statue.

Did you also notice that he was playing an Epiphone Sheraton? I don't think the Epiphone reproduction was made back then ... not sure anybody in the ABB ever used an Epiphone, either.

The director must have picked up the first pressing of the Seven Turns CD.

Ha, my thought exactly, thought he looked like a wizard.

Well, to be fair, I think this was just a dress rehearsal considering Gregg was in the studio.

THIS! As much as I love this band, Gregg's story alone just isn't interesting enough to warrant a movie. It would make a better movie than a film of my life, of course, but musician biopics all follow the same dull template. Peoples' lives are far too complicated and intricate to fit into 2 hours. The most successful films about legendary figures usually focus on a specific, defining moment in their lives rather than cram their whole life into one narrative arc. And the subject should never have final cut.

So sad that a young woman lost her life.
I was left feeling that some things should not be disturbed.
Or placed where they don't fit.
