Midnight in harlem

Does anyone know the orgin of the melody of that song? I recall hearing it in the late 80's early 90's in a rap song. Perhaps it was sample from something earlier. Any clues? Thanks.

I've never heard that, pretty sure the song is credited solely to Mike Mattison, though nothing is ever created solely in a vacuum.

, pretty sure the song is credited solely to Mike Mattison,
That is what Susan said on Saturday night when they played it .......giving a shout out to Mike for writing it.

Pretty sure it is solely a Mattison composition. I have Clapton's Crossroad DVD, 2010 I think, and its got a pretty good version on there. The guy is a freaking Harvard graduate too, how cool is that?

I haven't talked to him, but I'm pretty confident that Mike was dreaming on an island beach one night where he was visited by an angel who sang him heaven's lullaby until morning light. I believe he came up with the lyrics on his own.

No doubt the lyrics belong to mike. The melody is something i would bet my life I've heard before.

A lot of the melody is basically a walk-up in E. You can find similar patterns from delta blues songs to Allman Brothers solos. I believe slide-up riff from E to F# is not something I've heard before.

Maybe you're thinking of "Midnight Blue" by Lou Gramm. Or perhaps "Midnight Maniac" by Krokus. We've all made that mistake.

Here is Mike Mattison's version.

Songwriting credit is Mattison and Trucks on the CD. Mike brought it to the band but I believe it was finished with Derek. DT is not one of the ego artists that makes you give him a songwriting credit for changing a single word. I have heard Susan describe it as a song written by Mike and at different times say Mike and Derek.
My favorite version without a doubt in the 2010 Crossroads festival (would have been odd, but wish they had just dropped that version on Revelator):

Likewise, 2010 Crossroads Festival definitely one of the best IMO. I couldn't imagine a TTB without Mattisons' flavor.

Thanks for posting. I had never heard Mike's version. That was really tasty. Great great song.
That style of song TTB plays is my preference.

While I heard the melody on some rap song I think I've tracked it back to a stevie wonder song called "please don't go"
I'm sure you guys could care less but this has bugged me for years and now a load off of my shoulders.

That's pretty interesting, definitely hear the similarity on the brief progression from the maj>6>maj7 opening. Somewhat common, I've definitely heard it elsewhere. Always like hearing where these ear worms possibly originate, TTB definitely went in a different direction, but no secret they listen to Stevie.

(warning - threadjack!)
You want to talk about similarities, how about Labi Siffre - Watch Me, also released in 1972???
I won't have to tell you what song it sounds like, it even sounds like Dickey Betts is soloing on the song.
First time I heard this on NBC This Is Us show, I said holy cow. I've even worked up a cool mashup of this tune and the more popular similar one when I play it.

Wow, this guy owes Gregg's estate some money. Nice song though.
Here's a song called "Light Shine" from the late 1970s I'll throw out there that blew me away when I heard it. Can't get much closer than this:

Wow. I guess inspiration has to come from somewhere.
I'm a huge SRV fan but i have also heard a lot of his licks from older artist. Nice guitarist but not original.

This is a great Midnight in Harlem. Mountain Jam 2014
Not just the performance, but the video too. Beautiful summer day late afternoon with a gentle breeze as evidenced by the bubbles blowing through the air. The band definitely channels the afternoon bliss and has a great sustain note that begins Derek’s solo which perfectly builds to a monster crescendo. One of the best.
