Lynyrd Skynyrd are the subject of a documentary film that premieres next month on Showtime.
Lynyrd Skynyrd: If I Leave Here Tomorrow is said to cover the entirety of the band’s career, from their development in and rise from Jacksonville, Fla., to the plane crash that killed six people (including singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines), to their return in the ‘80s and continued success on the road today.
Guitarist Gary Rossington provides much of the narration for the film, which also includes interviews with former drummer Artimus Pyle and guitarist Ed King, as well as recently discovered radio interviews with Van Zant, guitarist Allen Collins and bassist Leon Wilkeson.
The film had its premiere at this year’s South by Southwest Festival. “I won’t be shy to say I cried a few times,” Rossington admitted at the time. “You can’t not, if you were part of it, you know?”
“Gregg Allman said it best,” current singer Johnny Van Zant (Ronnie’s brother) said after the premiere. “He said, ‘If you live long enough, you’re going to experience tragedy and triumphs.’ That’s what Lynyrd Skynyrd’s been. … It wouldn’t be Lynyrd Skynyrd without that, you know?”
Lynyrd Skynyrd are currently on their self-proclaimed “farewell” tour, which they recently extended through the end of the year. They play the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass.,
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

I’m looking forward to this but I wonder if it will be any different that the VH1 and AXS docs. I’ve heard mixed reports on that.

I am looking forward to this and I remember Ed King saying that he appears in this film for a total of zero minutes. Too bad, he was a huge part of their early success...

Why isn't King in the film?

It depends on the doc. This isn't going to be one of those 30 minute UK made docs that AXS TV airs. It's also not going to be one of those Allman Brothers Band "Before/After The Crash" 2 hour docs that the band isn't involved with and they just interview people who knew the band and use whatever music/footage that they can clear. It's Showtime so much more time, effort and money will be put into it.

Pretty good film. I was glad to see a lot of Gary Rossington in this one.

Wish I could have checked it out. Maybe it will show up outside of cable land eventually.

This morning at 10:30 CDT, several showings next few days.

I watched the show Saturday night, I thought showtime as usual did a great job. Lots of video and pics I've never seen before as well as stories I've never heard.
Gary Rossington had the most time, I never knew Gary was sitting between Ronnie and Steve Gaines when the plane went down, think about that for luck... Johnny VZ had a bunch of time, Big Ed King had a lot of time, the original bassist had some time as well as Rick
Medlocke.
The show started from the beginning and ended with the plane that ran out of fuel...
