A rule is a rule, but the way it was enforced is wrong.
I don't know the rules, was she supposed to self report it? Did the onsite officials just miss it?
If the onsite officials just missed it, there should have been no penalty.
We see it all the time in the NFL and Basketball, we the fans see a foul, no call, game goes on.
I don't think the NFL,NBA,NHL,MLB fans at home are sitting on the couch and emailing
the league officials the next day about a missed call and then altering the outcome of the game.
Sure fans are critical and everyone is a ref but the games are decided on the field not by the fans at home.
Rules are rules no doubt, but this falls on the officials of the LPGA and PGA to get it right at that time.This penanlty cut her winnings I think in half or maybe a little more down to 200,000 area I believe.Not that I feel to sorry about it, but games should be decided on the field of play. This happened few years ago on the PGA where somone saw an infraction at home and a golfer was penalized for it.

In reading the Nytimes article, it does say this has happened several times in the past, including once to Tiger Woods.
A loophole or rule that seriously needs changed, in my opinion.
By the way, kudos to the young woman for handling it with class, battling anyhow, forcing a playoff albeit losing that playoff.
