Last night Eddie Vedder was the guest. I recorded it but haven't watched it yet.

Tonight, Tuesday, 5/20: Bob Dylan.

Wednesday, 5/21: Dave's very last night on the air. Guests have not been announced, but if he's having Dylan tonight, you know it'll likely be good! My DVR is set.

Eddie Vedder was good last night. I won't reveal the song but I think it was one of Paul's classic "musical jokes." God I will miss that! Every time a guest came out on Letterman, the music Paul was playing had some sly joke on their name, or something to do with the guest. Very clever stuff!

Don't forget that besides Dylan tonight, he also has Bill Murray, who will be both his first guest ever and his last guest ever. If you've seen him on Letterman before, you know he always brings it, and I expect nothing less than greatness from Murray tonight.

Very excited about tonight's show.

Agree Murray is a great guest...I've been into Bill since he first appeared on SNL and he never lets you down...hilarious!

And Bob...wonder how many songs he'll do and if he does a Sinatra number from the new album? Should be fun!

Murray was fantastic and in rare form tonight, and the montage of past Murray appearances made a strong case that Murray-on-Dave was the single greatest guest/host combination in the history of late night talk shows. They had an utterly unique relationship that transcended the genre.

And Bob's song choice was totally appropriate, given Dave's impending departure. No spoilers for anybody who hasn't seen it yet Smile

Dylan looked like he was trying to be Tony Bennett.

Hello Deli compilation from last night was classic.

Sad to see Dave go. More so than Johnny Carson's retirement. Started watching Dave during my college years, staying up late not doing homework. Been a go to for at least 27 years.

Love his quirkiness, crazy ideas and that look he had that said you either get it or get out.

From the home office in Waboo, Nebraska.....

The montage with Rupert was pretty hysterical, wasn't it? Not to mention WAY ahead of its time. There is a whole genre of shows around now that basically do the same thing Dave and Rupert did 20 years ago, but Dave and Rupert were much edgier and funnier. I was shocked to find out the reason they stopped doing that whole routine was because somebody pulled a knife on Rupert! Yeah, that would be a good time to stop.

I loved when Bill Murray busted out the vodka and he and Dave started drinking from the bottle with Murray riffing on the famous "Cannonball!" scene from Caddyshack. When Murray started getting a little loose and crazy, there was a classic Dave moment when he very slowly and deliberately screwed the top back on the bottle and put it away in his desk. I was practically in tears! Just a classic example of Dave knowing the exact right thing to make a funny moment even funnier.

Now that I've given the DVR folks some spoiler-free time, a quick recap of musical jokes from the past two days.

Monday---"Betterman" = Letterman. Get it?
Tuesday--"The Night We Called It A Day." Get it?

Not a huge fan but they we're ferocious. Montage was great to go along with Foo's. Foo's even fit Farrah Fawcett's "what?" into the tune.

Great finale, just hating the 1 am bed time.

The man is going to be missed.

The ending montage was worth staying up for.

Noticed that they held Warren Zevon's picture up longer than the other musicians.

I'm not a big Foo Fighters fan either, but once again, the song was appropriate to the occasion.

Check out these lyrics from Everlong....

And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when

Everything about these last few shows was just about as perfect an ending as any TV show could ever have.

I finally got around to watching the last two nights. Bob Dylan nearly put me to sleep, I thought it a somewhat boring tune, but his voice actually sounded surprisingly good. Oh well.....Bob's......what, 73 years old now? I assume that was a Sinatra tune from his latest record?

Thank you for the link. I was mostly unaffected by the retirement news (other than siilently wishing Dave well) until I watched the last episode. I haven't been a regular viewer in a while, but I can't get over how many of the aired clips from the last show I have seen. I guess in some ways, his show was a backdrop to my twenties into my thirties.

Best of luck to those affiliated with the show.

I remember spewing whatever I was drinking through my nose the first time I saw Rupert in Mickey Dees. To this day, on my EXTREMELY rare ventures into the golden arches, I always tell them, "... a quarter-pounder ... no, wait. I'm hungry. Can I get a POUNDER?" Yeah, they've always heard it before but they laugh anyway.

Okay, Dylan's recent ... inspiration by Ol' Blue Eyes is on par with Gregory's flirtation with "Bro' Country" (or pop country - whatever). If you're a fan, you either find a way to enjoy it or you just play through. It's all good.

I really don't get your post, Rusty, no offense to you, and I usually agree with you, but I just do not get it. It seems that you're putting Dylan's Sinatra record in a class with Gregg's Low Country Blues and I'll have to say that's quite a stretch.

I have ultimate respect for Dylan and have seen him a bunch of times. But I can't quite grasp why he wants to do things like a record of Sinatra tunes. To me he just does not have the voice to be doing that. Low Country Blues? Hey, to each their own, but I happen to think that in time it could go down as one of the great blues records ever made. And I HOPE you would agree with me that Dylan is far, far, far away from ever approaching Gregg's vocal ability.

Hey Rob.

You don't get my post? That's cool. Dylan-esque, perhaps. 😉

I didn't mean or intend it as as attack on Gregg or Low Country Blues. As far as Low Country Blues goes though, I'm in the minority around here who just aren't that big a fan of it. I bought it, but I'm not sure I ever played it all the way through. I did give it a few tries.

All in all, it just sounds more like a T-Bone Burnett record with Gregg guesting on vocals. I could be totally wrong, but it just seems like the arrangements were done before Gregg showed up. T-Bone's players with Gregg singing. I would not be surprised to learn that Gregg showed up and recorded vocals over a scratch track. Not saying that's how it was - just wouldn't be shocked to hear if it was so.

I applaud Gregg for the album in the same way that I approve of Dylan for finding a fresh approach to things.

Historically, Bob Dylan has zigged when everybody expected (or wanted) for him to zag. Like Sinatra, he's done things his way. Going electric, doing an electric tour of Europe (which cost him a lot of money to even do) - he's made efforts to not paint the same picture twice. I pointed out in a recent concert review that Dylan's current setlist is about 85% recent material. He seems to make a genuine effort to not be an oldies act. He's not just going out there and playing the same stuff he was playing 40 years ago. No offense to all the acts who continue to do this.

Dylan's singing voice has always been an issue of contention. Listen to it though. He is very much on key and hitting the proper note. If anything, critics and naysayers have a problem with the tone or timbre of his voice. Kind of like hearing a wooden wind-chime instead of a brass or crystal one. The notes are there, though. They always have been.

For the record, neither his or Gregg's singing voices are what they were 40 years ago. They both continue to perform well.

I'm always amused by people who think T-Bone "ruined" Low Country Blues or something like that.

This is all pretty much true....

"All in all, it just sounds more like a T-Bone Burnett record with Gregg guesting on vocals. I could be totally wrong, but it just seems like the arrangements were done before Gregg showed up. T-Bone's players with Gregg singing. I would not be surprised to learn that Gregg showed up and recorded vocals over a scratch track. ...and Thank God it was like that, because if it wasn't there wouldn't have been a record at all.

You all keep waiting patiently for an album written, produced and all instruments played by Gregg Allman. I won't be holding my breath.

Agreed.

It's obvious that T-Bone Burnett had a huge hand in getting Low Country Blues done. Just like much of The Beatles greatest work would not have been up on the level it was without George Martin producing. And let's not forget that T-Bone gave Gregg a computer disc with tons of old blues tunes on it, and GREGG selected the ones he wanted to do. That's called letting the artist be the artist. And last I looked, T-Bone didn't sing anything on Low Country Blues. I happen to think the record ranks WAY up there with Gregg's greatest vocal performances.

I enjoyed Low Country Blues, but I believe that Rusty and Rob Johnson are correct that the only way a Gregg album got done was by T-Bone handling all of the work and Gregg just showing up to sing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Gregg has never really been the band leader even in his solo bands. Great vocalist and (in his day) songwriter, but after the early 70's his actual out put is minimal for the amount of work he has released.

As far as the "All Compositions By" album, I can almost guarantee if it ever comes out it will be re-recordings of all of the classics that he has written over the years and not an album of new songs. However, like Rob said nobody should hold their breath on it actually happening.

That said, I look forward to seeing him in a couple of weeks... hopefully with Jaimoe & Jack Pearson sitting in.

Agreed; Gregg is no leader. This is why Dickey stood up/grabbed the reigns and saved the band in 1973
