I'm sorry I am terrible at lyric interpretation of some songs. Does anybody know what this song is really saying? Who exactly are the left coast groovies?

Thanks.

I always thought it meant to watch out for the wanna be posers out there.

So it's not anti-hippy? I was confused about the "new age stench because they traded their patchouli" line.

One thing I can't get out of my mind is the mental image that formed of Warren doing the maharishi squat on the continental shelf when he was out there trying to find himself. LOL!

I concur with funkyfitter. Watch out for the 80's-90's LA industry (?) types and their fly-by-night fashion and fads. No doubt Warren and Woody were amused/shocked by seeing some of that firsthand in the ABB those early years of the ABB 89-96. Just picked up the Telstar Sessions and this tune rocks. Warren overdubs a killer slide outro on the song. Anti phoney not anti hippy. Cool

This is one of my favorite Mule tunes. The song was dedicated to Frank Zappa (it says "For FZ" after the title of the song on the back of the first CD.) Frank, of course, loved to poke fun at hippies and arrogant L.A. hipster/media types alike. According to wikipedia, the song was often introduced in concert with a monologue about Frank Zappa, with the band telling the audience: "If you don't like Frank Zappa, get the f*** out." Keep in mind that this song was written (circa 1994) when people were making fun of "yuppies" with their "car phones". You don't hear the word "yuppie" any more and nowadays everyone's got a "cellular phone"- including Warren himself!

Anyone hear this monologue about Frank Zappa during any Mule concerts?

Thanks everybody. I had no idea about the Frank Zappa connection which explains a lot.

I got in to all of this music around 99 and missed the first 2 studio Mule albums and started with Live with a Little Help from Our Friends back then. I just now became aware of this song from the Tel-Star sessions and it ROCKS.

I agree, the "new" Tel-Star Sessions version of Left Coast Groovies is awesome!!! (In fact, the whole album is awesome!) The Mule started playing that song a few weeks ago in Eugene and these guys in front of us lit up huge joints and began passing them around to complete strangers. These deadhead chicks were all twirling around. Lots of fun that night.
