Layla

Listening to this song right now. Never gets old hearing the original version. Clapton's great, but I think it's safe to say that it wouldn't be the song it is without Duane's slide playing!! There's been lots of great songs since, but you really can't beat this one when it comes to passionate singing, lyrics, and playing from all musicians!!

How true! This morning at about 7 sitting around a fire and Layla comes up in the rotation...my thought was. I can never get tired of hearing this song! What a gem

agree.
the best part imo is when Duane is wailing on slide right before the coda
of course, the main lick was Duane's idea (copped from Freddy King), so it would have been a waaaaay different song without Duane

This is just MY OPINION but certain songs like Layla and Blue Sky should never be played Live. The studio versions can't be topped .. ever by anyone including the original artists.

Couldn't agree more! The studio versions are it!

Actually Albert.

I actually think Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad burns more intensely, and much prefer listening to that tune.
Maybe it's because I've heard it a billion times on the radio, but I'd put Layla in the lower half if listing my favorite songs on that album. Which says nothing about whether Layla is a great song, because that albums is absolutely stacked with wonderful songs.

Agree w/DeadMallard & Dan's posts, nothing can top the studio versions of these songs -- same w/Nobody Knows too IMO

Too many overdubs.
The recording is as produced as a Led Zepplin song!
this is where it becomes Tom Dowd's masterpiece. It's not unlike a symphony work or a painting with all the layers. I've heard some great live versions, but the original -with Tom Dowd's fine touches is just one of the finer moments of rock and roll.

I agree that it is produced like a LZ song - at least the 2nd half. That is where Duane's playing is simply otherworldly. However I am glad most of Tom Dowds' productions were more straightforward i.e. no production tricks ala LZ. It was Brother Duane himself who said ( and I paraphrase here ) "great records don't impress me. Any one can make a great record. Great performances impress me." But put me down as someone who never tires of this song unlike so many other so-called classics.

The scene in the Dowd documentary where he is sitting at the board listening to Layla is wonderful.
