Also, I'm not sure where you're coming from when you say there's "no improvisation at all now." They did 28 songs over their New Year's Run past the nine-minute mark.

and dont forget what they did as their halloween album last year........

while not improve exactly (as im sure they at least did somewhat of a rehearsal), to pull something off like that takes more than just covering an album straight up.......

as for phish nowadaze in general---i think they are playing pretty strong...

my history with them----first saw em in 93......really got into them in 94 and did the halloween show that year (along with 95 and 95), and then really got into touring with them between 95 and 00......

gas was cheap in those days (knoxville in 98 was 79.9 cents a galloon) so i went to a bunch of shows around the southeast and midwest.........

after the 00 hiatus---i didnt see them again til 09....

listened to the 03 and 04 stuff and thought it was really bad and my money was being spent on seeing kimock a ton....

wasnt going to do any of the 09 shows but one was ten minutes from house........so i had to go...

went to it, and while not exactly strong----they renewed my faith in them........and quickly made plans to do more of the 09 shows......

and since then---probably seen 5 or so shows a year with them....

its not as strong as the pre 2000 stuff but its still pretty danged good........and just like any other touring bands---some nights are average and some nights are face melters......

and i enjoy it..........and thats what counts.........

Freakin' nice weekend!

yeah....i hope it all works out.....

i still need a kimock ticket if anyone has an extra....

the only thing i dont like about being in port chester, is that i really like to wander NYC at night after a show...

and yeah, i know, i could take a train down and what not, but that will become pricey.........

http://www.thebarnpresents.com/anatomy-of-a-rumor-grateful-dead-50th-anniversary-reunion-with-trey-anastasio-bruce-hornsby-at-soldier-field-july-3rd-4th-5th-2015-23379.html/blockquote >

Yes it's just a rumor. I agree with many of the facebook comments below that link.

I find Tahoe Tweezer to be highly overrated, and Trey and the rest of the band need to practice more like, and actually improvise in their live music like they used to.

Tahoe Tweezer = the band decided they were going to play Tweezer for 30 minutes no matter what, even if it runs its course and they run out of ideas which they did, twice.

Phish 3.0 isn't bad, I just personally wouldn't pay a lot to see them, tour with them, or travel very far to see them or see them multiple consecutive nights like I used to in the 90s.

It's still fun to be at phish shows, or watch live streams of them; but phish 3.0 shows aren't anything I'd listen to at home for fun via a downloaded Audience recording, or soundboard recording since their playing isn't what it once was in phish 1.0

A band doesn't need to be as good as 1.0 Phish to be worth listening to.

Everyone else has pretty much covered anything else I was going to say, but I feel you are really throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

If I skipped the Derek/Warren years of the ABB because they weren't as good as they were with Dickey, I would have missed a lot of good music. In fact, a lot of people did, and they did.

A little birdie came to me in a dream and told me there would be a multi night run in Michigan. Lineup would be Billy, Bobby, Mickey, Phil with Hornsby, Kimock, and Branford Marsalis 😛 😉

well put (not to mention the difference between the Original Lineup and whatever your 2nd favorite lineup was)

by the same token, I don't care who the guitar player is on stage with the core 4, it won't be close to the Grateful Dead

something like that. Sorry, I'm a Garcia kind of guy. When the Jerry & Pigpen show rolls into town, I'll be first in line for tickets. Otherwise, no.

i try not to be negative on this site but here's my experience with GD reunions and post garcia bands

Otherones 98 - very fun, not great.

Phil and Friends and Rat Dog late 90's. Great shows. Some Phil shows with Warren and Jimmy around 2000, over the top. Incredible.

Otherones 2002. Not very good.

The Dead 04- sort of OK.

The Dead 09 - Flat out sucked IMO. Not even Warren could rescue it but provided some bright spots.

Furthur - Never seen them. No more $$ to GD machine. Not saying never again but nothing about Bobby and Phil together excites me in any way.

50 yr reunion. Every potential to suck as it has to be good.

As the Dude would say " That's just like uhh.. my opinion "

tommars sums it up pretty nicely, in my estimation. I've seen the various versions of the post Grateful Dead bands, as well. I'm with tommars, I'm not here to beat-up on anyone.... Is it a money grab? I'm sure the promoter threw so much money at them they couldn't pass it up. I saw the Other Ones tour in '02, at the new place in Philly(not the old Spectrum). Not good. Mickey Hart had and onstage argument with Phil ... threw his drum sticks in the air, yelled something at Phil and stormed off the stage. These surviving members do not like each other. They do not travel together, they have separate backstage "green rooms", etc... I like to see bands that enjoy themselves, and one another, on stage. It shows in their music, imo.

Plus, I am not a fan of the Dead-lite at the summer Festival scene. Been done, to death. Lots of great bands out there to fill any void left by the Dead. Lockn was ridiculous. Way over done, but it sells tix, I guess?

This is awesome! Three nights confirmed at Soldier Field in Chicago. I hope I am able to get tickets for at least one (hopefully two) of the three shows. Seems like in keeping with their vibe, they are not gauging fans on the prices. I don't see it as a money grab at all.

This is gonna be great! Smile

Interesting reunion lineup. Trey will definitely help them move tickets; not sure 3 nights would have been possible without him.

My quick thought is that they may need those Furthur background singers. I'm not sure they have enough good singers to recreate those harmony/group vocals. Would Phil/Bob/Trey sound so great singing together? The beauty of having Warren in previous lineups is that he is an incredible harmony singer and even made Phil sound acceptable, plus can could carry lead which I guess Trey will get lots of in this version.

Second thought - those group vocals will probably be Bruce + Trey/Phil/Bob.

I think this is an ambitious run. If I were still living in Iowa I'd certainly make it. From Virginia it is a bit of a hike.

Still they have a lot of the MidWest to draw from and sell the tickets.

I'll be very impressed if they sell this run out.

I will be surprised if it doesn't sell out quickly. This will be the Summer destination for a lot of folks myself included. I just popped for the 4 day Phil's Birthday run and will definitely be road tripping from Philly for this. Booked the Travelodge this morning before the announcement. Just checked back for a friend and the hotel is sold out. I for one can't wait and I am no Trey fan. Chimenti AND Hornsby....now that's gonna be good.

I saw Further's last 4 shows in Mexico last year. I'm just not sure I want to pull the trigger on this Chicago run even though its 3.5 hrs away. hmmmmmmm

I just came back to eat my words. I am still shocked by this development, but I have to give props. You nailed it.

2,060 mile round trip from my house. Ouch.

Just can't see making the journey from NY for a venue that large; those guys can't sing well enough for The Beacon. Maybe they should do ten shows in March at the Beacon instead (with mixed up set lists and guests)!!! Just saying............

Phil and Friends did play some Phish songs the last time Trey played with them, but I doubt they do that this time.

Does this still seem "incredibly hard to believe"? 😉

These shows will be the jamband event of the year. Period.

The latest rumor is The Dead will play a FREE concert at the Polo Grounds in Golden Gate Park as a warmup gig before the 3 Soldier Field concerts in July.

Good questions. I've seen the various reincarnations of the dead bands like the other ones, the dead, ratdog, and Phil and friends, and they were cool, or good at the time; but not as good as the original GD with Jerry Garcia. But, I didn't pay a lot to see them-my friend and I actually were more excited to see the Allmans open up for the dead at Penn state in '08, and I stayed with him so I didn't have to pay for an overpriced hotel room; but I don't want to pay a lot to see the dead and Trey in a huge stadium, and pay for a plane ticket, and an expensive hotel for multiple nights.

I'll just watch the webcasts with friends on the holiday weekend since I need to save money.

These opinions reflect my views as well after having seen much of Phil and friends,Ratdog,Further, the dead, etc.

None compare to Garcia, but most were enjoyable and fun...no great mystical moments like the real thing!

However, like The_Newt,I'd plan to watch webcast....and despite my never enjoying phish I'm pleased with Trey given his excellent work with Phil in 99(I think?) and the years he played as a dead cover band with phish. I've never been a huge fan of hornsbys playing in the band...something just a bit off for my ears....

I hadn't heard about this. But living in the Bay area, and considering that this is the Dead's home base, it's VERY hard for me to believe that they will not do SOMETHING in this area, this year. A three night run at Shoreline Amphitheatre would seem very appropriate to me. They did a couple of three night runs a year there until Jerry passed. Shoreline is a beautiful outdoor venue and when packed holds 25,000.

If I skipped the Derek/Warren years of the ABB because they weren't as good as they were with Dickey, I would have missed a lot of good music. In fact, a lot of people did, and they did.

I am with you 100% on THAT, Rob!
