LAID BACK FESTIVAL- ATLANTA-SOUTHERN BLOOD

Great day of music over the weekend in Atlanta. When I first heard that Gregg's band planned on playing Southern Blood track by track I had to witness this live. Lamar Williams Jr. and Junior Mack shared the vocals with Scott as the band nailed each tune on the album. When the lights went down prior to the set and BB was singing loud over the PA system I had that same great feeling I used to get prior to a Brother's set or a Gregg solo show. When the band kicked into Statesboro is when the emotions of Gregg not with us anymore really hit me hard in the gut. Scott is a terrific band leader , guitar player, vocalist and Gregg emissary as he tastefully took us through Southern Blood . Devon and Jaimoe came out for Dreams , One Way Out and the closing Southbound as the crowd roared as if this was a Brother's show.
Lynyrd Skynyrd played a great set that featured Devon joining the band for Midnight Rider .

Wish I could have been there! Lamar and Junior have serious pipes and from the short video clips I saw did those songs serious justice. I didn't realize they were going to be the main vocalists, but I'm glad they were.
That awesome that Jaimoe came out for the ABB tunes.
Love that the ABB alumni continue to play together (Derek & Jaimoe last week) & with the alumni of Gregg's band.....and that they continue to play some of the ABB songbook (though I wish someone would pick up the mantle on the post-1989 tunes like Back Where It All Begins, End of the Line, Desdemona, High Cost of Low Living, True Gravity, Nobody Knows etc).
Thanks for the writeup rayg.

So cool. Lamar and Junior will both be singing with Friends of the Brothers next week at Brooklyn Bowl. I'm honestly excited just to hear them, much less play with them.

The Laid Back festival concept worked for me . Music started at 5 with a great hour of music from Jaimoe's Jazz Band . Highlights were Ain't Wasting Time No More and and a JJB original that they have been playing for awhile titled Dilemma. Lamar joined the band for a couple of tunes too. A young southern band named Bishop Gun played an uptempo blues influenced Rock set ( Gregg never liked when the term Southern Rock was used ) from 6:30- 7:30 . The Gregg set was from 8:00 to 9:40 and Skynyrd closed out the show from 10:10 till 11:40 . Where The Peach can be overwhelming and tiring at times with the multi day , multi stage format , Laid Back perfectly describes what this festival was all about . Venue was cool and the sound was great for each band . As soon as Skynyrd broke into Working For The MCA I was hooked . Great songs , great musicians playing these classic tunes and Johnny keeps the crowd engaged from the second they walk on stage till the second they get off the stage .

Saw the Laid Back Festival at Jones Beach a few weeks ago was very good. Jaimoes Jazz band did a awesome version of Loan Me a Dime.Didn't expect that at all.Junior Macks a great guitar player.Kris Jensen the sax player is great as well.Kris was formerly in the Dickey Betts Band and then Great Southern as was Dave Stoltz the bass player.Peter Wolf & Steve Winwood were also on the bill both were great. Peter Wolf hasn't lost a step in almost 50 years he did mention the brothers when they played together back in the late 60s early 70s. Steve Winwood opened with Can't find my way home the crowd loved it he got a 2-3 minute standing ovation his set was fantastic. Hope this trend continues.

Oh yeah, and Atlanta was Jaimoe + Marc together in the GAB set, too. Yet another pairing of Brothers.
