Kenny Wayne Sheppard

Saw him Saturday night and he kicked ass. I had heard his records but never saw him live. He stretched tunes out and soled extensively. IMHO the guy can play. He closed with Voodoo Child and brought the house down. I saw a video on youtube on Sunday and thought it was named something else it sounded a lot like an instrumental Soulshine. Check him out if you get the chance. Not sure, but i think the drummer was SRV's old drummer maybe someone can comfirm.

The instrumental you heard is probably the song "While We Cry" from his first album Ledbetter Heights.
Yes, Chris Layton has been Kenny's drummer for awhile now.
I've always enjoyed his playing, but there are a lot of people who only see him as a SRV clone.

Yeah, people have said that on this board for years. I like him. "Funny" how some folks say an artist sounds like someone and that is a terrible thing. I think people get influences from artists over the years. Doesn't seem like that bad of a thing to me.
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

There were several players who got pegged with the SRV clone tag at this time in the early 90s.

I guess he had some SRV but he played a lot of different things. On his last album there are some country tunes so I don't see the connection as that strong. I liked him and thought he could really play the guitar.

Jonny Lang.

Maybe every white teenage guitarist that came out at that time was going to get branded as the next somebody, SRV was just still fresh in everyone's minds.
I remember Kenny getting the SRV comparisons a lot more than Jonny Lang. It could have just been people being lazy since Jonny didn't use a middle name. I think the whole SRV clone/young gunslinger thing caused Lang's vocals to be overlooked.
Kenny's playing is a lot more reminiscent of Stevie's, but I think both did enough of their own thing to make it different.
I was funny but it seemed to be that every time either got mentioned on here that someone would feel the needto defend Derek, even if he wasn't mentioned. I think some fans saw it as a competition and their guy must be the champion. I think that caused some to not pay much attention to KWS or Lang as much as maybe they should have because they were viewed as competition for Derek.

He is a damn good player.

Thank you. I was trying to think and drew blanks. I always liked Ian Moore too. His first record is awsome. I seen him in 94 opening for Ted Nugent and Skynyrd. As WarEagleRK stated above, all of em got thrown into one can because SRV had just gotten so popular and then tragically taken in that crash. They are all great players for sure and if they did copy SRV they have swell tastes.

They try to throw Chris Duarte into that can as well... this cat can play...

His current keyboard player Joe Krown is based in New Orleans & known for his long tenure with Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's band. I saw them play recently and somebody sat in for a couple songs on second guitar (in addition to his vocalist Noah Hunt who sometimes plays guitar) but I didn't catch who that was, anybody know?

I think KWS has his own sound, and I enjoy his playing. I don't think of him as a Stevie Ray Vaughan clone. As for SRV clones, the first name that comes to my mind is Corey Stevens.

To put it mildly, he wore his SRV influence on his sleeve in his early records but really became his own guitar player, and has been for some time now.
As for While We Cry. It’s a pretty song. But damn isn’t a straight copy of Yellow Ledbetter (itself heavily drawing on Little Wing).
I really like KWS’s vocalist too.

I seen Corey Stevens in the mid 90s. I kinda got a more Clapton camp impression.

John Mayer played a lot of SRV licks early on.
