I was never a fan of dickey's countrified singing so I never heard more then 30 seconds of that song...until now. The ending is amazing. I think it would have been sweet to intro the song in that fashion as well.

So of course I listened to Blue Sky for the first time and now I get that too. Can any of you recommend some of his solo stuff with some great guitar riffing?

Thanks

You can't be serious ... unless you are 12 and just stumbled here. However, I'll play along if you don't like Dickey's "country" stuff check out his solo record Pattern Disruptive, last solo record before the 89 reunion with future ABB band members Warren Haynes and Johnny Neel. It is Dickey's hard rock record and shows he can throw down with the best of them in that vein. For the total country sound, the classic Highway Call is literally a masterpiece. Seriously, if you actually asked a question like this, you can't be aware of the all ABB records since the 89 reunion. Seven Turns, Shades Of Two Worlds and Back Where It All Begins are all great and chocked full of Bett's compositions as he was the undisputed leader at that time. Grin

No need for slack.

Just trying to figure out how that would be possible given, radio, movies, elevators, department stores etc. The song plays everywhere.

But how could someone not like his country style vocals and not be basing it off the song? Also throw Blue Sky in to the mix. What other song could he have come across?

Not judging but it is confusing. Especially for someone on an ABB forum.

Well he now has lots of great music to catch up on.

This is more plausible than I think most of us here can want to believe.

I would say that if you are anywhere in the 15-30 year old range and only know the ABB from the late 90's/early 00's onward, then odds are pretty high that you've only heard bits of Ramblin' Man in movies or commercials. And if you hear the opening jangle and don't like country, then odds are even higher you haven't heard the whole thing.

NEVER heard Ramblin' Man???

Other news you might've missed:

The war in Vietnam is over;
O.J. was acquitted;
the United Staes elected its first African-American President;
and ... Dickey Betts was drummed out of the Allman Brother's Band! 😉

Also my favorite Betts album. The whole thing is just a masterpiece. I saw Dickey's tour in support of the release. What a great show + allstar band. My favorite song from that album is "Rain".

Emphasis on drummed and no pun intended.

Hand pick maybe my fav but whatever's second Rain is ahead of.....just a beautiful song....It is so "In Tune" is chills me....the intonation on all instruments is just so pure....

Definitely check out Highway Call, and if you can get a copy of the Winterland show from 1974 from his solo tour it will blow your mind (pedal steel on "Elizabeth Reed"? it works!). His first Great Southern album is pretty solid, too. I'm not a big fan of Patterns Disruptive, it hasn't aged well in my opinion, but it's worth checking out. If you can find his acoustic album from 2002, The Collector's, definitely grab it - his cover of "Tangled Up in Blue" is fantastic. There is a Jimmy Rodgers tribute album out there which features Dickey doing a great version of "Waitin' for a Train".

Geez, you can put away the tin foil hats, it's not that big of a mystery.

I'm a 40 year old black man who grew up on rap and R&B. By the time I started buying music they were in cassette form so sorry I wouldn't have a worn out vinyl or 2 of the Filmore show.

I don't listen to classic rock radio stations, or know much about other classic rock bands. hard to explain why i'm such a huge fan of these guys, but their music just moves me.

I'd guess around age 30 I got into blues- The 3 Kings, Little Milton, Bobby Blue Bland etc and somehow I discovered Susan tedeschi in my quest for some modern artist which in turn led me to Derek Trucks, and ABB. I liked their bluesier stuff initially and kinda grew out from there.

Yeah most of my ABB stuff is the early recording with Duane and just after his passing and the 2000 to now stuff with derek and warren.

I know some of you think if I don't like DB's voice then why would I want any of his music? Have you ever heard the song "In the Air tonight" by Phil Collins? If not, then go listen to it and it will explain things far better then I could

I just download what I like, as I said was not a fan of dickey's singing so when I heard snippets of song he sang, I just moved on to the next. So I was hoping you all could take my story and help point me in the right direction to an Album and songs that dickey really rips it up and not suspect some type of funny business. For those posted links and albums and suggestions, thank you.

If you haven't explored the 1990's lineup of the Allmans, you are in for a treat. Jump in with a couple of live albums to listen to Warren & Dickey trade some serious guitar riffs - Play All Night and 2nd Set.

Also, if the "Ramblin' Man" guitar symphony grabbed your ear, try tracking down the extended edition of the Brothers & Sisters album which has a ton of great instrumental rehearsal material and a mammoth concert from that lineup of the band.

Here's a version of "Rain" from BHLT with Chuck singing lead vocals & Jimmy Hall singing background. This is much less country sounding than the Highway Call version. I like listening to different takes on songs. Saw them do this in a small club back in the day. Great & treasured memories.

My experience was just the opposite...I first found the ABB an they lead me to Blues and Jazz and a little towards country.....the Dead lead me to Folk and Bluegrass.....

There really is a huge amount of great music if you are willing to do the research....Glad you found the ABB Grin

This thread is kind of funny. On one hand it's practically impossible to not have heard this song before. On the other hand, if you're young or we're brought up on a different genre, it's completely understandable. Either way if this song turns him on to the greater jam band scene that's basically been generated by the Allmans, then welcome to the crowd.

It's never too late to be turned on to great music.

daddymack, here are the three 70's albums that showcase Dickey on his own, from "The Days". These are a good start. Also the 90's ABB albums are all Dickey Deluxe on guitar and songwriting, check all those out.

And if you ever come to Montana, I'll play Mr. Betts for you as he should be heard, analog reel to reel show tapes from the old days.
