July-Sept 1993

While Dickey was on hiatus - from Jimmy H July 31 to Zakk Wylde Aug 1 - yeah that’s covering it
2 quick ?s
7/31/93, the only time those 2 guitar titans, Warren & Jimmy, ever crossed paths on an ABB stage (yes?), & anyone here who might’ve attended - John Popper sat in on several songs (database)
Also, forgotten fill in David Grissom, who played a string of 7 shows in Aug - anyone?
Then it was Jack P after that until Dickey returned, do have one of those shows.....Xclnt audience DAT tape source
Nothing matters but the fever 😉

Jimmy sat in w ABB a bunch in 2009 when Panic toured w em. Some titanic jams...Liz Reed, Les Brers etc. ABB last great year...

I have one of the David Grissom shows - it’s solid. Grissom does well on the bluesier numbers, struggles a bit on the jazzier material in my opinion. Warren shoulders a little more responsibility and pulls it through.
There are 2 other Warren/Jimmy ABB shows - 9/21/2000 for the One for Woody show and 12/21/2000 at Warrens’s Xmas Jam. There’s an official release of the Xmas jam show where you can hear a few cuts of that lineup.

thx

1993 is when Dickey was at the hotel drunk and his wife called the police and Dickey got into a fight with a policeman and was thrown in jail and missed the show that night. Butch was so angry they wouldn't bail Dickey out of jail and left him there. Warren got busy and found other guitarist to fill in. I thought that was silly since they toured most of 1972 with one guitarist after Duane was killed but I don't want to think I know more about what they needed than they did.
Anyway Dickey finally got out of jail and promised the judge he would check into a clinic to get straight.
After the summer tour was over Gregg, Butch and Dickey met and agreed to carry on and go to work on a new album which would be recorded at Burt Reynolds' studio in Jupiter, Florida wasn't it? It came out and became their biggest selling album since Enlighten Rogues and their last new release to earn a gold disk.
Dickey failed to stay clean and Gregg was no better so Butch and Warren had their hands full. Allen Woody predicted they would be lucky to stay together another five years. Warren and Woody quit in 3 years.

Hi Stephen, yes, a very interesting period in ABB history...I was at the 7/30 SPAC show, Dickey seemed "off" during the show, was slurring words during the accoustic set. The next night in Stowe, Vt, John Popper (in a wheelchair) sat in for many songs and Jimmy Herring was the second guitar...it was part of the HORDE fest, so other bands were there.
I missed the Boston (Zakk) show, but saw the 8/3/93 show at Merriweather with David Grissom. Lots of energy at both Stowe and MWP (the band wanted to show they could do it w/out Dickey). At one time there was a full video of the Stowe show on youtube...A big contrast between the very cool Vermont evening and the hot, humid rainy Md evening. A lot fell on Warren's shoulders during that time, i thought he stepped up big time.

One for Woody, Sept 21, 2000. Jimmy & Warren were the two ABB guitarists as well.

I was at the Jones Beach show with Grissom.Found it rather disappointing, but in all fairness I think it was only the second or third show he played with the band on very short notice. It was a long time ago,but I seem to remember Grissom,at least the way I saw it,just trying not to screw anything up.Like a backup QB just trying not to turn the ball over.
Would like to hear that show again.Maybe it was more the shock of finding out there was no Dickey just as the show was about to start(no internet warning then) than it was Grissom trying to blend in

Blackey, thank you for your insight & keeping the dust off this place.
I enjoy your posts.

Great stuff indeed, incl that link on the other thread slycker
Looked him up, David has a regular gig at a club in Austin TX, & is releasing in May a live, “mostly instrumental” show from there w/his trio
He said it was Revolver that got him hooked on guitar, specifically the riff in GTGYIMyLife:D

Great info, thanks
Laterz

I think David was the lead guitartist for John Mellencamp when I saw him on TV in the 90's.
