Sad news. Johnny was a real giant in our corner of the music world. If his name was on an album, you knew instantly about it's quality. Beyond his classic contributions in the '60s and '70s, he played a big role in great '90s roots music including Widespread Panic, Allgood Music Company and Jupiter Coyote.

I knew Johnny when he was the drummer in the Allman Joys/Hour Glass. He was the most humble and nicest man in the world. I was so happy for the great success he achieved later on. My sincerest condolences to Ann and the family. Rest In Peace, Johnny.

what an impact he had

My condolences to wife Anathalee Sandlin and the entire Sandlin family.

If you've read "A Never Ending Groove" by Anathalee Sandlin, you know that Johnny had a HUGE impact on ABB in the early days and in fact at one point was asked to join the band. He declined, preferring to remain behind the mixing board. Later he produced their biggest selling record, Brothers and Sisters.

Another record Sandlin produced in the early days (1972) was on of my all-time faves and in my opinion a classic, "Captain Beyond". The sound on Captain Beyond still holds up to his day and it's a very unique record, definitely way ahead of it's time both in regards to the songwriting and the sound. Johnny continued to produce records at his own studio to my knowledge until very recently.

I just finished listening to the encore from this show ( Blue Sky, Trouble no More>>Whipping Post) and all I can say is WOW! What a Performance. My Copy of this show was taken right off of KSAN the night of the performance... The tape runs all the way through the return to the studio and then some. After the final notes of W.P. the crowd goes nuts and continues to stomp their feet and clap, Finally Bill Graham emerges to say the Band thanks you... and... Ciao... Greensleves starts to play and Tom Donahue (KSAN D.J. Host of the show) starts to thank Tom Fly, Tom Scott and Johhny Sandlin as Johnny walks by the Broadcast Booth . The following is the transcript of the short interview between Tom and Johnny. I didn't know if this was on the traded version of the show... so here goes:

T.D./ John...Why don't you come over here for a minute.
You're an ex Bass player aren't ya?
J.S./ah...I used to play Bass and drums some ...yeah
T.D./ Didn't you play in...were you in Hourglass?
J.S./ Yeah, I played drums for the Hourglass
T.D./ Yeah right, so you've been around the Allmans for a long time
J.S./ Yeah, I've known Gregg and Duane for a good while, close friends
T.D./ Wouldn't you say that tonight was one of the best performances you've heard out of them?
J.S./ Uh.. I thought it was very good...ah....
Donahue interjects:
T.D./ A lot of intensity
J.S./Ahh, The power was there and they were all playing very well
T.D./ So you're gonna go in and start workin' on this tape that's been cut tonight...tomorrow night?

The list of his workings and achievements is amazing. A major achiever. The list of artists he worked with and his production / albums shaped the direction for many of us on this site.
