I saw TTB the previous week. We didn't get "Little Martha", but we got "Don't Keep Me Wondering". My friend flew down to Nashville for the two Ryman shows & sent me me a phone vid of "Little Martha". So good!

I was there for this. That was incredibly special to be able to witness. The whole room felt it. Pretty awesome.

That song, spiritually speaking, was written by Jimi Hendrix.

True story. Jimi Hendrix wrote the song using letter magnets on Dickey Betts' fridge. Dickey was dating Martha Reeves from Martha and the Vandellas and named it after her. When the song was released on Legendary Hits, Marc Quinones was pissed because he arranged the hambone part but never got paid. But by that time, Chuck Leavel was dating Karen Carpenter and the band was not happy. Then Chuck snitched on Phil Walden's black market faberge egg ring and Warren said he would never play with him again. Then the band got back together, but without the Tolers, and real fans know the Toler Brothers ARE The Allman Brothers. For years fans demanded LET FRANKIE SING, but never did. Jaimoe used to post "DOOM WILL RISE" here on the forum for years, which was a song he wrote for U.S. Mule that Dickey refused to record because it wasn't metal enough. Dickey was playing a Zakk Wilde signature Ibanez at that time, which he gave to Warren's son, Worn Hanes, jr. He doesn't play guitar.

Agreed, tickled my funnybone. But it does raise the question, "How long before someone here responds by giving all of we fans the complete history of the Allman Brothers Band that will undoubtedly contain stories we all know already because we are lifelong fans"?

Research it and discover I'm correct. I saw the ABB reluctantly in early 1970 when a friend who had their first album talked me into going. At first listen, I wasn't blown away by the album but was impressed by Dreams and Whipping Post.

We were near the stage between where Duane and Dickey were standing and it was like a sinner agreeing to go to a Billy Sunday or Jimmy Swaggart tent revival and being slain by the Holy Ghost and being born again!! Totally unexpected and I was hooked like a man that just shot up smack and saw angels. I became an ABB disciple and tried to hold a job yet travel hours by car to those shows for my boogie fix. It was like being converted to a religion. I had never had a band of musicians move and transform my inter self before. When Duane was killed it was still good but never again did I completely reach that spiritual level
Some lineups came close, others not so much.

I absorbed everything I could find about the band and was told by roadies, soundmen and sometimes band members. Berry would come out more than the others and talk with the groupies before shows

One story that got covered in some of the music mags back then is Duane Allman telling how Little Martha came about, a song written for a girl named Dixie. Duane said he was sleeping in a motel room and in a dream, Jimi Hendrix walked into the room, went over to the sink and turned on the water and used his fingers to play the melody on the stream of water flowing down.
Duane woke up, grabbed his acoustic guitar and wham o played Little Martha.

Research the song Little Martha on the net and Im certain that story will surface.

When it comes to the early ABB days you'll have to trust me. I'm usually right. Or close to it.

blackey, but the point is that we all know these stories. They are not obscure tales. If you read it in a mag or a book, it's safe to assume that the rest of us who still choose to spend time on a defunct band's forum also know the legends well.

The thing that does make me chuckle about this is that I think blackey believes he's talking to a bunch of young kids who are just starting to get into the ABB and are only kinda familiar with its music - not a site full of people who have been listening to it for 20 to 50 years and heard all of these stories a million times.

I have never heard this Hendrix story..

I went googling like Blackey recommended and found something fascinating..... in the voice of the Oak Island and Ancient Aliens narrator, "Could it be? Little Martha has Lyrics??"

https://www.songfacts.com/facts/the-allman-brothers-band/little-martha

Libby from Miami, Fl
"First off, my sister Dixie was not a groupie. Her and Duane were together for many years. They were together when Duane passed. The song Little Martha was written and named for Dixie. To this day, she is the only one who has the original copy of the words.
Just wanted to set the record straight."

Two points. Melody is not lyrics.

It would incredibly generous if those lyrics were shared....
Cool

This post deserves it's own thread out of just admiration and appreciation of it's comedic genius.

A+++.

Research it and discover I'm correct.

SO many things here. Most notably lets just look at the most jarring: You're quoting (as fact) someone's dreams (who's dead) and telling people to research that dead person's dreams.

Crazy night to say the least. Our house is about a mile from the strip in East Nashville that just got lit up. We were extremely lucky to have had no damage but everyone wasn't as lucky. We live in a musician's corridor of town and a lot of people lost a lot....both personally and in terms of private businesses. The Five Points area got destroyed and one of the best venues in town (Basement East) also was destroyed. If anyone wants to or is looking for ways to help.....DM me. There's a lot of local help floating around.

This is from the 1975 biography by Tom Nolan
“Candace Oakley Johansen witnessed the genesis of Little Martha

(Candace)
“Duane came over to the house one morning...he was so excited, he was pacing back and forth - he said, ‘I gotta tell you this, I gotta tell you this. I had a dream last night that was so outta sight!’ He was pacing back and forth, kinda kicking up his heels and doing his duck like walk

“He couldn’t get it out fast enough, he was stuttering over the words. ‘I had this dream, he says, that me and Jimi Hendrix were in a Holiday Inn room somewhere, and we were sittin around talkin about gigs, and Jimi got up and went over to the faucet, and he said, c’mere man, I got something for you to hear. And he played me a tune on that damn water faucet!

“ ‘And that tune went over and over in my head, until I woke up & got my guitar and fiddled with it & fiddled with it until I got it down. Then I went over to the organ & played it until I got it down on that. And I said, damn, that’s a helluva tune!’

“It was Little Martha, which is engraved on his tombstone.”
