That's a picture by Jim Marshall in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park , indeed 1966.
They were doing a group photo shoot with all members of Quicksilver Messenger Service, Grateful Dead, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane and The Charlatans.

Thanks for posting. My birthday is coming up. I was born in 66. Hard to believe 50 years have gone by.
