I'm in downtown Providence and phish is in town starting a 9 city tour, so I'm told, and a good percentage of fans are buying nitrogen(?) filled balloons at $5 a pop from a few "vendors" and claim its quite a high. Now, I've been around and have gone to/worked my fair share of concerts but have never seen/heard of this. People from early 20's to 50's sucking some gas out of a balloon. What's up with that?

You should have taken a stroll down Michigan Avenue at 2am after any of the Fare Thee Well Core 4 Dead shows in 2015. Shitshow of nitrous.

Having lived in RI for 25 years - but no longer - I think it is more about Providence than Phish. 😛

Had it at the dentist once. Weak stupid buzz and a headache after.

You can get similar effects for free by hyperventilating and then holding your breath and spinning around. In othervwords, why pay to be an idiot?

I don't get Phish, all I think they really do is support a scene or a psuedo-scene to be precise.

I mean, Phish is not really my cup of tea either but they've supported their OWN scene for over 25 years, throw their OWN festivals that pull in 100k people to just see them and can sell out MSG 13 nights in a row.......there's nothing pseudo about it. Their thing is very real.

I've worked in bars and restaurants for over 30 years, and as someone who can't help but smirk everytime I grab a whipped cream cannister that has gone inexplicably flat before its time, I can tell you it ain't just Phish fans.

In college, folks would buy cartridges and pop them in what looked like an old-fashioned bartender's device, or just a balloon.

It was at a Dead show that I saw the massive balloons. I think the ones I saw being used were from college cafeteria milk bags. If you ever went to a college cafeteria where the milk dispenser had a nozzle that you pressed your class up against, and gravity let milk pour out, well, inside that machine was either a 2.5 or 5 gallon plastic bag that looked like a pillow. It had a long rubber nozzle or udder. If you fill that bag with laughing gas instead of milk, you can squeeze it against your chest with that nozzle in your mouth. Laughter ensues. Or so I have read.

The nitrous thing became an element in the parking lots of the jam band scene in general.

I'm in the same boat....Not really my cup of tea but they're no doubt the biggest band in the jam band scene. I dare say up there with the Dead at their peak in terms of the amount of fans and magnitude of their business enterprise year in year out..

All that being said, I just found out that I am the happy recipient of a free ticket to see Phish at MSG on 12/30. I have not seen them in 20 years, so I'm psyched. It beats watching TV.

LMAO! You've never heard of nitrous? Or seen people use it? This thread has to be a joke. It is sold at almost every single concert event in the Northeast and has been for decades. If you are in PA/NJ it shows up being sold at sports events in the lot or so I have been told. I am not a sports fan but that's what people I know who are told me.

No I never partook or supported the nitrous mafia but I went to many Allmans, dead, and phish shows in/around Philadelphia and NJ in the summer, fall, spring, and winter where nitrous was openly sold. It was funny to see people who had never used it do it standing up and fall right on their ass. I have heard from a friend that most nitrous sold at shows is not food grade or medical grade but can be automotive grade. I am not sure how true this is though?

I experimented with nitrous a maybe four times in low doses besides the one large dose I had for dental surgery but it was medical grade and food grade, I breathed in plenty of air, took B-Complex supplements, and I never used whipits or went crazy with the cartridges. It went well on its own or with pot; but it just made magic mushrooms confusing. I remember being 19 in the early 2000s, and going to a local mall and trying to buy whipped cream chargers and the store clerk refusing to sell them to me. I don't use any drugs at all now soft or hard but I don't regret it as you cannot change the past.

A much older deadhead I know told me all about how he inhaled lots of nitrous in the 1970s when some guy he knew whose father was a dentist or dental surgeon and he shared a tank one night.

I used to love phish in the 1.0 and parts of the 2.0 era like summer 2003; but phish 3.0 is not good at all. "Rich enough not to practise...' I am really glad I saw the majority of my phish shows in 1.0 and 2.0 and not just only 3.0

I agree...Way too much Phish on the Jam On channel.....I miss the good ole days when they played a sh@t ton of the Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Panic, the Dead, etc....Now they play tons of Phish and too much electronica jammy stuff...

I also miss Bill Walton's Greatful Dead Saturday night program....It was always cool hearing his stories of the numerous Dead shows he'd attended....

Pretty sure nitrous migrated from the Dead scene because the Phish shows in the early 90's I saw didn't have it yet.

They don't call it Hippie Crack for nothing. I've seen people spend every last dollar sucking it down....

Really? To each his own about which era you prefer, but to say phish doesn't practice in the 3.0 era is just false.

Article of evidence #1: 13 nights at MSG without repeating a song. That's not something a band resting on their laurels can go out and accomplish the way they did.

They moved it to an online only channel and fired all the DJ's including Warren's wife Stephanie who did a great job. Unless it's Phish or GD you are screwed for jam music on XM Sirius.

Hey Newt. . I'm 63 years old. Last concert I went to was maybe 30 years ago. I can't even remember who the last band I saw was. Back before I quit using/drinking (26 years ago) I was either banging dope, smoking/snorting/banging coke, doing Percodan or Quaalude or goofers by the handful, drinking my daily bottle of Jack Daniels and twisting one up but no, this ain't no joke and I ain't never seen nobody sucking gas out of a balloon, OK with you, son?

I have done some dumb shi*t in my life.

Inhaling fumes/gases from a bottle or balloon is just something I wouldn't do. Just don't trust anyone enough to know 100% what is in the balloon. LOL

Not passing judgement as Tony Montana Rock and Roll Cocaine years absolutely took off after Nancy Reagan said no to drugs. The Columbians' response was drop the price and increase the quality. That crap flooded the music business and everywhere else.

Sucking on a balloon just seems like sniffing glue to me or something along those lines. Just can't be good for you. LOL

I noticed it showing up at ABB shows during the last couple of years before they called it quits. At the last two shows I saw in 2013 (one at Gilford, NH and the other in Mansfield, MA) I saw a few male twenty-somethings with nitrous tanks, filling and selling balloons in the parking lots.

I've never understood the appeal of it.

No sh#t? I wasn't aware that Stef got the boot....or this on-line business. I always enjoyed Steph's incites into the various goings on within the Jam Band scene. Also, I very much enjoyed when her and Warren would occasionally host together and call some of their friends within the scene and chat it up live on air.

Or when they'd have a musician guest host for a few hours and they'd play their favorite music. Particularly when Dweezil Zappa hosted a year or so ago.
