Could just be a song about nobody, or one with hints of everyone mixed in. That's the great thing about a song when some mystery is left up to the listener to interpret its meaning.

Gregg, Butch and Dickey use to say Duane Allman was always the first to face the fire. It may be a nod to Duane and others in general.

The Allman Brothers began when Phil Walden wanted Duane to put a 3 piece band together and introduced Duane to Jaimoe. Duane had discovered a very unique bass player Berry Oakley and that was to be the band. When Duane moved his band to Macon where Phil was, he had added 3 other guys and wanted 50 thousand dollars for equipment. Phil Walden wasn't expecting all that and Duane faced the fire over that from Phil. Atlantic records told Phil the band wouldn't make it Duane's way. The singer needs to be out front in tight pants and get someone else to play keys and you don't need two drummers etc etc. We know how Duane faced that fire.

"Firing Line"

Known you since you've been born
Raisin' hell even as a child
Nothing's changed since that day
You're still out running wild
Hellhound on your trail
Gettin' closer with every passing mile

Hey now baby,
Don't you think it's high time
To change your life's direction
Get off the firing line

Well your luck just ain't been running
Lord, very smooth these days
I think it's finally come down
You're gonna have to mend your ways
With your head up in the clouds
You cannot see through the haze

Hey now sweet baby,
Don't you think it's high time
To change your life's direction
Get off the firing line

Step outside, take a look aroud
Do you see anyone who cares?
Spent your whole life steppin' on your friends
Still you ain't nowhere

Search for a new direction
But the past is all you'll find
You can count up all your mistakes
Blame it on your criminal mind
When you lay down with snakes
You come up poisoned every time

Hey now baby,
Don't you think it's high time
To change your life's direction
Get off the firing line
Get off the firing line
Get off the firing line

Well, the only person to ask now is Warren because the official writing credits go to Gregg, Warren and Sir Mack Rice.

Sir Mack Rice? Same guy who wrote Mustang Sally and Respect Yourself that others made famous back in the 60's? He passed away in 2016.

That's a random co-writer. Wasn't aware until I looked it up just now.....

Probably close enough to something Rice had written in the past that they had to give credit.

I don't listen to Hitting the Note much and haven't in years and now that I have read the words to the song, it's very unlikely the song is about Duane Allman. If it's about an Allman Brother it must be about Dickey.

I'm a fan since 1970 and the original line up is the Allman Brothers. I thought the 1989 to about 1994 with Warren and Allen was very close to the original. Saw some 5 man and Chuck and Lamar shows that cooked but Duane and Berry were so missed

I saw some strong shows with Jack Pearson and Otiel and 1999 with Derek and Dickey.

But Brothers of the Road without Jaimoe and Hitting the Note without Dickey are two ABB albums I don't give a crap about. It's enough without Duane and Berry. Shave it down to 3 originals like that did in 1980 and 2000 looses it for me. Same with LS and MTB

Well thank God we got that cleared up! Haha.
