"If you were a music producer and could take one artist...

....into the studio and have your word be King...
Who would it be and what would you do?
Me?... I'd take Gregg Allman and do at least one big Gospel tune with a choir, a bunch of up-tempo stuff with horns, A "Live" long version of "Mess up a good thing" an old blues duet with E.C. that would have Gregg and Eric both playing acoustics and a couple of Jazz-tinged pieces that featured some nice Hammond B-3 solos from Mr. Allman.
That's what I would do.

The voice of Gregg along with some unreleased guitar parts of Duane allman in the vault somewhere and Derek and write a song. Now that would be smoking....SO Derek,Duane and Gregg could be together.

Love this topic and love this idea for Gregg. Which brings me to another point: Gregg needs to make some more records, but many have said that. As Vince alluded to, the Soul and Gospel potential is really unlimited for him. Remember how he killed "A Change Is Gonna Come" on the Live From The Beacon DVD? That is only one of many that he needs to put down on record. Fourteen years between Searching For Simplicity and Low Country Blues is an awful long dry spell...........way too long.
Gregg keeps talking about a record of all originals. He shouldn't have to wait until he has enough good originals in the can to record a great record of Soul/Gospel tunes.

He has been saying for years he is writing songs..Blah Blah..If he is happy rehashing songs from over 40 years ago so be it,but new music is where it is at..A new studio album of originals with Jack pearson, Scott Sharrard and the horn section on it would be killer.

So many to chose from but I will go with Govt Mule. They continue to go with Gordie and release the same album over and over. Songs far too similar and Warren often going to those "crutch" licks for solos. He needs someone to push and challenge him which has not happened since Life Before Insanity and Woody's death.

As much as I love Mule, I have to agree with you. After Life Before Insanity, the studio releases do pretty much seem the same. The live stuff and tours are totally different. And in a good way.
It would be cool if they took something in a different direction. Just my opinion.

Well, I would get the Allmans' final line-up back together and book a residence at Levon Helms' barn, where he had his Rambles. The small audience, who had purchased tickets exclusively through HTN, would be well informed that the band would be avoiding greatest hits, that their mission was to play New originals, covers, songs by individual members, and either lesser known or dramatically reworked Allmans songs. They would be testing out half-written ideas or even complete improvs. They might do multiple takes of a song.
The idea would be to have the live gig energy with an absence of big-crowd expectations. In this way, we would gather the material for an album.

I always wished Elvis lived to work with [The Stray Cats] I pictured an album & live show featuring Scotty Moore, Danny Gatton, Carl Perkins, James Burton doing some killer rockabilly.

Saweet! 😛

Great idea for a thread......but I am not sure if I could pick just one! Ugh!!!
I will have to think about it and narrow it down if possible. 😉
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

I would love to get Mick Taylor in the studio with a great singer like Chris Robinson or Gregg, and really push him. I think Mick needs a push, and also he is one of those guitar heroes from a great band who now serves as the lead singer of his own band but has an unremarkable voice. Steve Howe and Steve Hackett are the same way.
He also sometimes prefers to play slow and somewhat average blues songs (like Mayall does sometimes too) when he really shines more on songs that offer more dynamics.
So, maybe the key would be to get the Black Crowes to re unite with Mick Taylor on lead guitar for an album, perhaps with Peter Green jumping in for a song or two.

I'd take the final ABB, plus bring in Jack Pearson and Chuck Leavell as a guest on a few tracks, and head to Derek's studio....spend as much time as need to finish ideas and songs etc. Would have been easier before Warren recorded a few of them for his solo disc!
A more realistic one would be to take Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit into the studio to do a true band album, with more room for Sadler Vaden. Jason recorded with the 400 Unit again for his new record (first time with Sadler) but he billed it as another solo album. Sadler is too big of a talent to not take better advantage of him.
I do like the Mick Taylor idea too....

I would barricade Ian Anderson in the recording booth until he coughed up a record of just himself and one guitar, no frills no Jethroproduction, just Ian solo.

I would take Steve Winwood in the studio with all of his 80's solo recordings and work on taking the 80's out of them. There are some great song ideas ruined by 80's production.
Either rerecord them or at the very least remove the synth and drums and rerecord those parts.

I agree. I would like to see Warren join a band/project where he is not the main focal point as the songwriter. More of a guitarist first and some vocals where he can colaborate and work with someone else who is strong in the songwriting dept where they can work together and bounce ideas off of. I would like to see him work with John Paul Jones as producer.
This has been hard to pick one and I just cant..sorry. Ihave been thiking about it for ahwile and I have narrowed it down to just three.
Dickey is the first. I would like to work with him becasue he can shine in various styles. Jazz,Blues,Swing,Rock. Very versatile and a great guitar player.
Deep Purple. I would like to hear them a little more with an edge and raw, extend some songs out more. They have the talent to do so, and its something we have not heard in a long time.
The last one was very good and some songs had some real potential , but I though it was a lilttle too polished and over produce. Take the reigns off and let them go. Inject some more "Rawk". This band was a power house and still is. Let it shine.
Chris Cornell. I have always been a BIG fan of his vocals, but the bands not so much. Grunge was not my cup of tea. They had some good songs, but that genre I had a hard time getting into.
Audioslave had some really good songs, but not how I wanted to hear him.
I would like to hear him more in a classic rock type band. Thats where I think his vocals and style would really peak. If Page had his chops and a good producer such as JPJ, they could be dangerous.

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Chris Cornell with JPJ and Page? Sign me up. Bring in Denny Carmassi or Matt Cameron on drums.
JPJ's solo albums are awesome. I saw him tour for Thunderthief - one of the best shows I've seen.

I agree . I REALLY like Zooma, Thnderthief was pretty good too. Thats cool you were able to see him. I had the chance during the Zooma tour , but could not make it. Some did not care for The Crooked Vultures, but I liked that one as well. JPJ can be all over the map musical wise , which is good. It show his versatility. I saw him the summer with Dave Rawlings in Louisville and that was a very strong performance by all.
I have mentioned it before , but I would to see JPJ work with Warren as a producer and a musician in a project.
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

I would walk into the room and there would be 4 musicians in there and I would say you are not leaving until the album is done. The year would be 1973, '74, or '76 and the band would be CSNY.

I'd take Geddy Lee, Flea, Les Claypool and Danny Carey into a studio and see what happens.

I would try for Dickey and all the remaining guitarist that have been in the ABB...
Warren, Derek, Jack P & Jimmy Herring - maybe an album of there favorite covers or Dickey's tunes...
for kicks also bring in Leroy Parnell, Greg Martin from the Headhunters etc...
OR
maybe finish that Country Album he scapped many years ago... put in some western swing tunes with Willie & the boys...
