If absolutely no cars are around to see it, do you still use your turn signal?

I don't.

But I bet we can disagree on this around here.

If a man is alone in the woods and is talking to himself, and no woman hears him, is he still wrong?

I probably do...it's instinctive.
You know one Sunday morning at 6:00 I was driving to a restaurant for breakfast before work. There wasn't a car on the road and I came to a red light. I stopped at the light - looked around and felt foolish for waiting so I drove through the intersection and damned if it didn't have a red light camera that flashed and caught me ! It was a pretty expensive trip to the only diner that was open.

It's not just cars, but pedestrians that are watching. It drives me crazy when I am waiting to cross the street and a car is coming, and then the a-hole turns with no signal, wasting my muthafecking time. Or visa versa, I start crossing the street and a car decides to all of a sudden turn at me, no signal.

Just turn it on, don't be a jerk 😉

OK, let me rephrase, if no cars OR pedestrians or any living creature of any kind...

Similar thing happened to me 35 or so years ago.

Red light, after midnight, no one around - so I went through.

Well, a cop was maybe a mile down the other road, close enough to see his light was green, not close enough for me to see him...I got nabbed.

Always, even driving to work at 3.45.am every morning. Drives me nuts that drivers think you are a mind reader.

If you're in the middle of Siberia, go ahead and skip the signal.

Using signals is instinctive - it happens almost automatically when I'm getting ready to turn or change lanes

I was trained to drive professionally for regular company truck use for over 30 years so it is beat into me. Turn signals all the time. Hazardous parking situation, do the backing first when you survey scene. Circle of safety. Parking brake on seemingly flat ground, etc etc.....

food for thought: people get hit all the time by cars that they don't see or in other words are " a no car around to see it" kind of car.....

As a bicyclist, I find the turn signal the most important thing for a car to utilize. I would prefer for cops to give a $5 fine for speeding, but a $500 fine for not using it. I have almost been killed several times by people who don't use it (because they thought no one was around) and turned right in front of me. And I get it: I'm in the bike lane, who looks in their right side rear view mirror before turning right? But that signal indicator is my lifeline, please don't sever it! Oh, and if you're IN a designated turning lane, then no need to signal, we all know where you're going. Because of this, I use mine all the time. Always. Oh, and if you're in the middle of the turn, it's too damn late to put on your turn signal. The rule is, put it on before you put on the brakes. Ok, off my soapbox now...

Preach on!

Basically, even when you think "no one" is around, someone that you can't see probably is and has no clue where the hell you are going.

I travel to NY frequently and on congested roads if you use your signal drivers will actually speed up to close the gap to prevent a lane change if you show your intent by signaling.

if the driver signals its not as annoying as not signaling and cutting in, even if you were "cut off"

It's an automatic reflex action for me. It would be harder to not do it. Just like buckling the seat belt.

I do now. About 6 years ago an officer pulled me over. I changed lanes without signaling after someone (service road of a major highway) got stuck blocking my lane. He informed me that it was the third time I didn't signal. I said ????. He apparently had followed me on and off the expressway (about 10 miles.) I think he was upset that I did nothing worse than not signaling. I got six tickets (apparently failure to signal and dangerous lane change were different in his mind) Cost e $500 for a lawyer. I couldn't believe it - no idea why he had it in for me

Signalling is for the benefit of others, not the driver, so if no others are around then what's the point?

A lot of accidents happen when drivers thought no one was around... is it so difficult to turn on your signal and lessen the chance of an accident, even if the chance is very small to start with?

I use them, I once had someone in my blindspot on a dead highway, I popped the blinker and as I started to move over I got a horn toot. It helped me, He knew my intentions.

The road is filled with jack-asses. Too many people are rude and inconsiderate. I see idiots blocking the crosswalks all the time (90% range), That extra 5 feet does nothing but inconvenience pedestrians and folks attempting to turn down the block.

On a busy 2 lane road where I live I leave 50 feet in front of me clear so folks can jump out and go if the other side is open. I see folks charging up others butts to protect that glorious 10 feet of space. It seems like a conquest to them? Where you going Speed Racer? I match the speed of the car in front of me but at a small convenient distance to others, I'll see the guy in front of me close up at the next light or stop sign. Too many cut throat drivers flying around like it's a game.

Where is the good hearted human spirit?
