I've been playing guitar as a "serious hobby" for about 8 years now. Have a group of buddies and we jam in our basements. But I have never had the nerve to play in front of people.
I know I'm decent but damn people scare me. Anyway, my wife and I were at a bar on vacation, we heard the folks playing and she said that I could definitely do just fine.
I didn't want to, but after she talked to half he bar about me, I couldn't back down.
Played and sang a couple simple classic country songs and got a nice hand.
Funny how that first step is so hard and yet when it's over you're wondering what the big deal is. I can't wait to play for folks again. S
36+ years playing, Never been onstage. My wife is my only fan. I improvise and create and play as often as my life's responsibilities allow. I wrote songs down early on, but haven't in years. The ultimate rewarding time kill. I've been the same level for decades it seems, but music is the love of my life and maybe one day. Congrats!

I'm pretty much a back porch picker myself. When I lived in Alabama, I had several friends who were on the pro level who would come to my house for jams. I do some home multi-tracking - playing all instruments. I'm still a hack by anybody's standards. I did an open mic night once. I got really, really nervous. Fortunately, I was wearing my brown pants.
I'd love to try to get up there again - hopefully with a back-up player or two. It's fun and easy in my living room. But when you get up there all alone on that stage ... just some scary stuff for me.

That's great! Learning to play is easy, getting up on stage is the hard part. I jam with some guys on Monday nights, but I've never gotten up on stage solo (though I've recently scoped out a popular open mic near me). Enjoy performing, there's a lot to be learned from it rather than playing for yourself.

I haven't played in front of people for a while (I"m a drummer) but I used to a fair bit in my younger days.
Personally, I get a real charge out of it, especially when the audience responds well.
I must admit that sitting behind a kit with a few other guys on stage is not quite the same as standing by yourself with a guitar in your hand

Congrats on having the balls to get up there! I don't play but I sang a bit with my buddy at parties in my early 20's so I know it ain't easy.
I've played in bands since my early 20's, never had one bit of a problem getting up onstage. Started playing my own stuff at open mic events solo about a year ago, it was terrifying! Every new place I play solo I feel the same way the first time I get up there. Once you play a venue a couple of times and some folks get to know you its much easier. It seems really scary playing original stuff, and I'm not a great singer. But it is so much fun, and so rewarding once you've done it. I love open mic stuff now, and play all my own stuff, but I still feel those butterflies a flutterin' every time I go up. Congrats on a big step.

Yeah, back in my drankin' days ... I had a lot more nerve and courage thanks to folks like Jack Daniels and Bud Weiser. I was more prone to get up with a guitar and let 'er rip. I'm a little more reserved about playing in front of more than three people these days. It kinda sucks.

I checked out AWTNM, and it sounded good. Thought the vocals were quite good with nice control & attention to phrasing & enunciation of words (which are real pluses & dynamics) when singing.

Well, I always say that my lack of singing ability is the problem of the listener.
Sorry if I hijacked the thread. My point was that if it is your inclination, it is possible to go from your first open mic to regular gigging in short order. And for those of you on the fence, just go visit an open mic to show some support. It will most likely reveal to you that you're at least as good (if not better) than those already performing.
