How can I hook Echo to my stereo?

I thought this could be straightforward. I got an audio cable and hooked my Echo to my receiver in an auxiliary plug in. It works, but only in one speaker. shouldn't it work on both?
thanks for any advice folks may have!

Have no idea what youve got there, never heard of echo but I bet your device has a 3.5 mm cable out. Sounds like you want to run it to a big oldschool amp.
Is the aux input 3.5 mm stereo? Is your cable stereo?
Aux might be wrong. Get a "Female 3.5 mm Y adapter to RCA" left and right. Or if not RCA whatever your left right jacks are on amp. The aux in might be the wrong setup.
Anyway thats the angle, hook up to actual left and right channels, maybe forget the aux.

First thanks for responding. I have found folks to be so helpful on this site over the years!
Echo is a device from amazon. It features alexa, who manages many home devices . It also streams Amazon Music. with all of the music I own I never thought I would want a streaming service. but my wife and daughter purchased the trial when we got the Echo and I am hooked on how simple it is to use, and how deep the music choices are , as I tend to like the more obscure artists.
the quality of the Echo speaker is ok, but I have a high end stereo that sounds great and wondered if it could run through that. I went to Best buy and the young guys there at first had no idea what this old guy wanted to do. But they quickly got it and suggested the exact audio cable you pictured.
I think it only plays one speaker because Echo is not a stereo production. It only has the one input in the back, so it may just come out "mono."
I will keep playing with the connections. I was also told Bluetooth connection might work but I fear once again it may only play one speaker.
Last option is to hook this to my wireless speaker. It is a Bose, and is pretty good, but not as good as my stereo! but I am not real swift and am not sure how to hook my Bluetooth to Echo.
anyone know?
thank you again

Found some chatter here: https://www.reddit.com/r/amazonecho/comments/5pjp2i/amazon_echo_dot_is_only_mono_with_aux_jack/
Sounds like they are getting stereo out - saw a few mentions of pushing the 3.5 mm in harder, til it clicks - that happens sometimes, seems like its in but it isnt all the way. They said the devivlce itself is mono, but the echo out is stereo - make sure you have a stereo 3.5mm cable.
Sometimes the cable jacks are made too short, to fit devices in faraway places where everyting is slightly different. Once i trimmed a couple mm off cable housing off with a knife to make a 3.5mm jack longer to seat right. cant hurt to try, just dont cut the cable, theres a bit more jack in the housing before it turns to wires. worst can happen is you botch a 3$ cable.

bless you Brer Rabbit! I checked the Redditt site and read the comments, too. so I pushed harder on the cable plug to my Echo connection! It went in further and now I have glorious stereo on my glorious stereo. First song playing is Berry Oakley singing Hoochie
Coochie Man live, followed by Mountain Jam. Life is good!
thank you so much!
