@porkchopbob He he!! You are so right.
Dickey has said in a couple interviews he only uses the neck pickup and occasionally the neck and bridge together ( middle position on a LP) but never the bridge alone.
But here it looks like bridge only ( down position).
Also the old Strat sounds a little different from the LP here but so similar when Dickey plays it or the PRS or an SG or ES-335 etc. Dickey has/had his own style and sounded like Dickey alone and it was melodic and perhaps my favorite of all time.
Well here is down position it looks to me on the pickup switch.

Another story on the birth of the Stratocaster - told by folks who were there. No mention of the rejects, but I'm sure that happened.

Top 30 guitarists who influenced the guitar world.
I know. Another list that could be improved.

@robertdee Good to finally see Chet on one of these lists! Where in the galaxy is this Guitar World? Seems like it's already been colonized!

@bill_graham I had an SG 200 - very similar to a Melody Maker (thin, crappy pickups) once. I have played several Standard models. They're actually pretty badass guitars! The main knocks that I've heard are that the head is heavy compared to the body. That headstock angle is the biggest concern. Notice that if you lay one on its back - the tip of the head forms sort of a bridge against the body. In other words, the guitar doesn't lay flat. This has led to incidents where people have accidentally stepped on the guitar/neck - causing it to snap. Seriously, when shopping for a used SG always study the "nape" of the neck for repairs. I'll point out that necks can be repaired ... to a degree of satisfaction. For me, it's just knowing that the neck has been snapped and glued back that spooks me away from a repaired instrument - of any kind. I have seen repairs fail over time.

A lot of folks now believe that Les Paul had his name taken off the SG because he was divorcing Mary Ford and didn't want her to get any of the contract money. Also, due to the the head angle Les Pauls, Sgs and all Gibsons are prone to breakage at the nut, the wood is the thinnest where the angle is the steepest. Duane's Les Paul had a repaired headstock.

@njpaulc I saw Les in an interview and he said the new Les Paul was not fashioned how he suggested and invisioned a guitar with his name on it. Apparently the former and today's Les Paul was.
But the Mary Ford angle may be the main thing.
If Les had said Yeah I think the new design is cool. I'm proud to have my name on it!! Then would the Les Paul we love today had died on the vine in 1961??
Probably.

Yeah, most Gibson electrics have the same head stock angle and the necks are glued to the body (Firebirds, Explorers, Flying V and a few others have different head stocks). The only differences being the thickness of the neck (slim taper vs baseball bat) and where it attaches to the body of the guitar. The latter affects the strength of the joint more than anything since SG necks attach right at the 24th (and final) fret, LPs at the 16th fret, 335s at the 22nd fret.
@rusty I've heard players complain of SG "neck dive", but that's only an issue if you let go of the neck. It's so inconsequential while you're playing, I think some players just repeat that complaint without knowing what they're saying.

Actually nice bends and vibrato but the solo doesn't go anywhere for me. But it's nasty and it's guitar porn!

Very interesting interview with a bass player I didn't know. But he's worked with Joe Walsh twice, Elton John, Hall and Oates and was best friends with guitar hero Tommy Bolin.
Check it out.

Plek fret leveling explained

Joe Satriani is one of our best known "shredder" style guitarist.
Just saw him interviewed on one of the cabel channels and he is a super strat man and plays an Ibanez version of a souped Strat.
Joe said Fender has more pickups to select from now to get a fatter tone but the neck digs into his arm because of his aggressive style of playing.
And he added a Gibson Les Paul is completely out of the question for his style. Said because of his aggressive style, a Les Paul always goes out of tune before the first couple of songs are over.
The Telecaster is one classic design he can play and does play occasionally. But Joe warned a Telecaster isn't a guitar which will help you and cover for you if you are off a bit that night. With a Tele you have to fight it and keep control of it or even minor clams will stand out making you sound sloppy.
He didn't say anything about Paul Reed Smith guitars but their Strat style Silver guitar right now is a big seller for PRS I read last night.
It has a Strat body which looks to be an exact copy of a Strat with a typical looking PRS neck and headstock bolted on.
I'm skeptical a Les Paul goes out of tune that easily if you have a very aggressive playing style.

@robertdee Maybe a Les Paul goes out for Joe because of his aggressive style but Slash beats on his Les Paul pretty good and he seems to play in tune the dozen times I have seen him live.
Then again Joe could just swap guitars every few songs to get tuned up. Doesn't take long to retune a guitar that is slightly out of tune.
They also make locking machine heads that lock right at the tuner so I just think the Ibanez suits him as he does use the whammy bar a lot on his music so need a locking bridge like a Floyd Rose to keep in tune.

@bill_graham Yes I agree. Joe gets PAID to play his custom Ibanez super Strat. Maybe that is part of it.
Don't know about now but in the 90's Ibanez sold more so called SUPER STRATS than Fender. Kramer was another and the Kramer body looked exactly like a Strat.
I just remembered Joe said the Strat whammy bar wasn't any good either. Get rowdy with it and out of tune you go. Ibanez has the Floyd Rose whammy and he and Steve Via can stomp on them with their feet and they stay in tune.
I guess Jimi Hendrix played out of tune all the time Bill. Jimi was certainly aggressive with the whammy on a Strat.

@robertdee yeah I have heard other musicians and fans complain about Hendrix playing out of tune all the time. But the difference is Jimi knew how to make it sound good IMHO.
