John Mayer made a lot of cash in recent years with The Dead and brother Otiel got his hands on some of it too.

Now John is trying to find a way to get The Dead back out some.

Here is his rig. Lots of Martin acoustics, a custom Strat and a custom PRS that a first place is a Strat body with a Paul Reed Smith neck. Has a 61 SG and other Gibsons too.

@bill_graham There's this new place in my town that sells something called shaved ice - which they flavor with ice cream flavors (chocolate, for instance).  This stuff is similar to ice cream only in that it's cold and has come ice cream flavor.  You can get this stuff called Impossible Burgers (one of several name brands) that tastes a great deal like hamburger ... just not exactly.  There is this stuff called Delta 8, which comes in gummies and even smokeable buds - it is similar to low-fair grade  strains of the actual substance that it substitutes for.

I've had a couple of ES-335 knockoffs, copies - whatever.  A couple were decent instruments ... but nothing like an actual Gibson ES-335.  If you want ice cream - buy ice cream.  Unless you're a devout vegetarian - get a real hamburger.  If you have any connections at all (legal or otherwise) - go for actual cannabis instead of this altered THC sprayed hemp.  And if you want a Gibson ES-335 (the way that I do!) - save your money and get the genuine article.  You'll be glad you did!

ES-335 is an excellent guitar and a long time classic. Dickey was playing one ( some roadies dispute that and claim it was an ES-345) when the Allman Brothers formed and had been for several years. I think he played a Fender Jazz master in the Jokers then went to the big Gibson.

Duane Allman had one and Dickey gave it and a 1955 Fender Strat Dickey got from Gregg for a car to Eddy Shaver. Last I read Willie Nelson has the Strat and ES-335 in his big safe.

Here is the new solo guitar from Ace of Kiss fame.

He is a Les Paul man and a Les Paul plugged into a Marshall is his set up live.

In the studio he does his solos with a Les Paul but uses a Fender Strat for the rhythm tracks.

@rusty Yes Rusty. "Watch That Little *'"#&$ Steal My Guitar"!!

At least he left a broken Taylor acoustic guitar on the rack where the $3,000.00 Gretsch was hanging. Nice guy!!

I was just reading an interview with Warren Haynes and he brought up his Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster that was stolen in 1992 in New York City and Warren said he continues to miss the guitar and it was specially made for him and he never replaced it.

Over 30 years later and Warren still misses it.

Alan Paul said Warren was so upset he had Pawn Shops, Music Stores etc on the look out coast to coast but the Strat has never been spotted anywhere.

I'm not sure but I think Warren's guitar was lifted off the stage at the Beacon. I seem to remember reading that 30 years ago.

What pile of crap would do that to Warren Haynes??

Little comparison between a Les Paul and Strat.

The tones are indeed a little different to me but I like both!!

@robertdee Eric sounds a little more terrestrial - while Jeff sounds like "Blues from Mars" or something.  Both are awesome!

@rusty Yes you better have you "A" game ready if you're going to play a solo with those guys.

But even my A game would fall short so I would lie and say I forgot my guitar.

Duane Allman, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks could hold their own with Clapton. Not better but different which is good. I don't enjoy two or three guitars together and they sound similar or almost the same.

@robertdee Too many cooks!  Gets all "guitarded" after a while!  Two guitars - fine.  Three guitars ... okay.  I hate those shows where they get 15 players on stage playing "Sweet Home Chicago" for 20 minutes and everybody takes a solo - which are all bound to sound somewhat similar.

@rusty Sometime Lynyrd Skynyrd sounded that way to me Rusty. If you drilled down, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington and Ed King has different styles but on the rock out stuff they sound so similar I can't tell who is who on some live albums.

@bill_graham Very interesting. I had heard years ago the first Strats were unplayable because of bad bridge/whammy design and inconsistent wood in the bodies. And George Fullerton ordered them scrapped.

Some guitars sounding better than others of the exact same make was something that plagued all makes back then because of how the wood turned out.

Just saw on TV that Joe Don Rooney of Rascal Flatts has posted on "X", his first contact with fans in two years that he is not dead and is not transitioning to a woman.

He said it was as simple as he became a drunk and just dropped out for two years.

Here he was before he became a drunk and dropped out. Glad he got his life in better shape.

Old friend who lives now in Pasadena saw the Eagles and Steely Dan in Los Angeles yesterday and was well pleased.

Said the Eagles are clearly the best and most polished band playing rock performing today.

Well they won't be in two years. They are supposed to call it quits sometime in 2025 with Henley, Walsh and Schmidt all 76 years old right now. They will be 78 when they quit.

@bill_graham I've never been fond of a SG even though I bought one years ago at a yard sale and it sounds good.

To me a SG is not a Les Paul and I'm a Les Paul fan.

Actually as we know the first SG was a redesign of the Les Paul and branded a Les Paul. Les Paul the man didn't take to it though I've seen footage of Les and Mary Ford playing them but Les eventually asked Gibson to take his name off. I think that is when it was branded SG.

Maybe that is why I never liked the design.

@robertdee Bad design - especially in the neck angle -which gets easily broken.  Very common to find neck repairs when shopping for older/vintage/used instruments.  Great sounding guitars, though.

I have a LP and an SG. I actually prefer the SG, but it all depends on what neck profile each player prefers. But they sound totally different. Unless you're Dickey Betts, where every guitar sounds like Dickey Betts.
