@goldtop I saw that too Goldtop. Tom Murphy knows his stuff they say.Â
$19,999 each!!??? Well if it were $20,000 that might discourage a lot of people.Â
It's a beautiful guitar and well built. But they say all Les Pauls are different and test them acoustically before you buy to make sure the wood gives it good tone and sustain.Â
But I bet all the Tom Murphy guitars sound very similar. Doubt they would keep one for sale if the wood wasn't up to snuff on a particular instrument.Â

@robertdee The price is also because of Brazilian rosewood fretboards. That's what they used on all the original 50's LP's...A typical Tom M would go for $10,000 as if that's a better price...LOL it's all gone over the top

Was Eddie Van Halen the best all around rock guitarists we've had. Innovative licks, tone, speed, vibrato, tricks, cleanness etc?Â
That is what the young guns at the music store here told me this morning.Â
They laughed at me when I mentioned Warren Haynes. Derek Trucks, Dickey Betts, Ed King and had never heard of Jack Pearson. They did give some respect to o Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore and Steve Via.Â
These arguments are really useless. It's all about what you like personally.Â
Here is a Eddie disciple Tom Shreds showing Eddie chops up close.Â

Generational preferences usually based on personal taste and current styles. EVH fans (or players under 30 years old) swear by their guy. Combination of tone, speed, stomp box effects, etc. Yes, Eddie was a player. Youngun's scoff at the mention of the likes of Duane, Derek, Clapton et al ... they have no idea who Freddy King even was! Fans of the latter group might roll their own eyes at the mention of Django, Chet or even Segovia. Everybody mentioned in this post was phenomenal! Â

Eddie Van Halen was a generational talent that changed the way the current generation play guitar IMHO.
He is not one of my favorites as I do favor the old school players, that rd and rusty mentioned, but I respect his talent and influence.
Sammy Hagar was on the Howard Stern show recently with the band that is doing the upcoming VH tribute tour. Joe Satriani was recruited to try to play Eddie's riffs and he explains what makes it so difficult to play some of them. Joe is a real virtuoso so have no doubt he will be dialed in come tour time.

Pickup magnets through the years. Interesting article on how the magnet type impact the tone of a pickup

@bill_graham Great article. I had never considered magnets as part of the tone of a guitar.Â
Here is a 1962 Fiesta red Strat. I always liked the color. Hank Marvin. Also Gary Moore had one.Â

Gary's 1962 Fiesta red Strat. I once read this guitar was stolen and later was found lying in a ditch and Gary got it back complete with a big scratch on the body just above the pick guard.Â

Guitar amp settings for better tone

@bill_graham As the years go by the more I like Joe. Not only as a great player but as a great person and a man that cares about guitars, music, people and his fans.Â
He is probably more open and accessible than any other famous guitar player.Â
And he has a huge collection of special instruments because he loves guitars.Â

@robertdee I am with you rd. I was a casual fan for many years and then saw him open for BB King on King's 80th birthday tour. That is when he really hooked me. The only downside is now that he has become more popular tickets to his concerts have gotten $$$ for decent seats.
Joe is a gear hound, and love all his videos sharing his collection, but in his case I respect it as he actually uses the vintage gear he buys and doesn't lock it away in a storage unit or put on display for bragging rights.

@bill_graham Joe is coming to my area. I went last time for $140.00. This time it's $220.00 for a general admission seat.Â
Last time Joe played a cool Martin acoustic on two songs, an Ovation on one.Â
Electric wise I recall a Tele on 3 or 4 and it sounded hot. Great sounding Tele.Â
Then about five different Les Pauls all very pretty guitars with big fat tones.Â
Also played some Stratocasters which sounded clean and loud. Used a very pretty Green Strat on a slow blues thing I think was The Sky Is Crying and it has a fat sound so the pickups may not have been typical single coil.Â
Joe was clean and hot on every song. Likes to do those double stroke fast runs maybe a little too much for my tastes but his vibrato is real fine and his bends are always in tune and so are his guitars. Joe didn't play anything that went out of tune and that is Joe. He wants a slick professional show on every number.Â
A class act. Kinda like B. B. King. Usually not someone's favorite act or guitarist but still well respected.Â

Tool's Adam Jones Gibson Flying V Murphy Custom Shop Fyling V Collectors Edition. Only 50 to be made at a price tag of $20k.
Cool looking guitar but, IMHO, most likely a collectors item that never get played by most owners who end up buying them.

@bill_graham This is, I think, is the guitar due to the headstock shape ( V shaped) that instigated Gibson's big law suite against Dean guitars.

I just checked and the lawsuit was ruled last summer. Gibson also sued because some Dean guitars also have body shapes extremely similar to the Gibson Explorer.Â
Gibson was asking for millions from Dean but was awarded just $4,000.00 because the Dean guitars had been on the market since 1976 and Gibson waited over 40 years to take legal action.Â
So far this year Gibson has 34 percent market share with electrics, Fender has 30 percent with over a dozen makes fighting for the remaining 36 percent with Paul Reed Smith and Ibanez the leaders for that 36 percent.Â

Jerry Garcia's favorite guitar player was?Â
RICHARD THOMPSON!!!!!!! Yes according to an interview I read last night at Jerry's 50th birthday, it was Richard!Â

@bill_graham Well that was so interesting. Mitch Mitchell looks 16!Â
And all those young chaps in the audience are 75 to 85 now:(Â
I saw them in 1968 in Greensboro. N. C. and they opened for The Monkeys.Â
Jimi and his band was 🔊📢 LOUD 🔊📢!!!!!Â
Jimi's guitar was LOUD!!! Standing right in front of a stack of MARSHALLS!!Â
At the time I wasn't aware he played left handed. My buddy was but he didn't know Jimi played a right handed guitar up side down.Â

@bill_graham Now that is a guitar dreams are made of!!!Â
Murphy labs is the real deal. What a great tone!!Â
