Mark Knopfler guitar collection up for auction

Norm's Rare Guitar of the day
2011 Fender Telecaster Deluxe

@bill_graham Wonder why Mark is selling his guitar collection? Celebrity Net Worth has his 2023 worth at $105 million!! Apparently not for the money.
The red Strat is what he played on their breakout album and the red Strat is what he played when I saw a show on the tour back then.
Second time I saw him years later Mark played the red Strat on just a few songs including Sultans of Swing. Rest was an acoustic on two songs and a red sunburst Les Paul on the rest of the show. And as best I can remember, he never used a pick.

Could be he just doesn't play them anymore?
Saw him about 10 years ago solo at the Boston Orpheum Theater playing Irish folk music. He pretty much only used a Strat that concert.

@bill_graham Yes I guess I hadn't thought of that.
That is what David Gilmore said when he put his guitars up for auction including his famous black Strat and the white Les Paul he played in the studio on Another Brick On The Wall. That he wanted the instruments to be used by others since he was inclined not to use them anymore.
But the black Strat sold at auction for over a million dollars. A guitar that expensive isn't going on tour or played in a club.
Kurt Hammett of Metallica takes the Greeny Les Paul he paid $2 million for but I assume Metallica has top notch security at their shows. Mona Lisa type security.
I remember Gary Moore saying in an interview after Peter Green let him have that Les Paul he also had a guitar case Eric Clapton once owned and he was so afraid someone would break into his flat and steal the Les Paul and case that he took the Les Paul with him everywhere he went. And after a few weeks it became burdensome but he kept it up until Gary could afford a secure place to live.
I read some polls rate this guitar solo as the best ever in rock history. It's not mine. Mine is the solo Duane Allman does on Liz Reed on Fillmore East.
This guitar sold for over 1 million dollars!

Mark Knopfler is only 74 years old. That might seem ancient to high school kids, but there are rock stars and ... (ahem) politicians much older who are still doing whatever it is that they do.
Like most players of his stature, I'm sure Mark's got several closets full of guitars. I'm sure there are many in his collection that he doesn't or hasn't played in a while. That's one reason to have a garage sale. The other reason - let's say that Mark Knopfler has a late model Singapore made Squier that he wants to get rid of. If I sold this guitar, I'd me lucky to get $150.00 for it. Same guitar sold from the collection of the likes of Mark Knopfler? Probably get a couple of $grand easy.
Having said all that, I'd love to have a guitar with Mark Knopfler DNA on it! I'd lick that thing clean hoping to ingest any of his talent and mojo that might be on it! I know I'd look stoopid, but I'd lick that thing like it was lollipop! 😉

In this article he states he feels it is time to let them go for others to enjoy as he can't play them all. Also 25% of the proceeds go to charity.

@bill_graham That is cool Bill and Rusty. I've always enjoyed Mark's playing and writing. Man has he written some great songs!!
Here is a taste of Dickey's guitar playing at RFK Stadium in '73. Mr. Betts sounding like ONLY he can!! I can't think of another player who sounds like this.

Norm's Rare Guitar's- Guitar of the day, 1950's ES-350 Blonde with P-90 pickups

Okay, Jim Irsay might own a bunch of historic guitars, but he seems like a bit of an a$$hole when it comes to getting a DUI:
Rich, white - whatever - nobody should get preferential treatment for operating a vehicle while $hitfaced!

@rusty I agree Rusty. Driving drunk is a mean thing to do no matter who it is.
I think it's similar to Russian Roulette but perhaps not as risky but if you get unlucky it's almost as deadly for you and even innocent people.

Gibson gives Tom Murphy the stash of Brazilian rosewood and carte blanche to make special limited edition aged 1959 Les Paul's reissues. I am sure they will be amazing guitars but $20k?
https://www.guitarworld.com/news/gibson-custom-murphy-lab-les-paul-brazilian-rosewood

@bill_graham Personally, I have never seen a guitar worth $20,000.00. If somebody else has that kind of spare change and wants to spend it that way - that's their prerogative.

Just saw another interview with Mark Knopfler and he said he is selling 120 pieces of gear including his 1983 Gibson Les Paul he used on "Money For Nothing" because he is at the age he is pulling back from any serious touring and recording big albums and wants the gear to hopefully find someone who will use it.
Mark said he will have about 20 guitars going forward.
Okay it's not for the money. He just wants to downsize and let the gear hopefully go to people who will use it because now Mark is not using the 120 pieces of gear and plans to never use the gear again.

Found out the people in the local jail here who won't come clean with Detectives about what they know about a crime have to listen to this clip on a loud speaker over and over on a loop until they cave and spill!!

@robertdee I could probably withstand several hours of rubber hoses, sleep deprivation - even having my fingernails pulled out with pliers without breaking. But if they started playing music by the likes of Phil Collins, Shania Twain - most any of the over-played radio crap, I'd spill everything immediately! 😉

@bill_graham That is one cool guitar!! Nice tone on all three pickups and it has a WHAMMY bar. Bigsby I assume.
I wonder why the three pickups didn't catch on that well. Some SGs also has three pickups. Warren Haynes has or had a white SG with three pickups. I've seen pictures of Warren holding it for the photo but never saw Warren actually play it.
On the Les Paul with two pickups with the switch up you are on the neck pickup. Down is the bridge and in the middle is both isn't it.
Not sure how the three pickups works.

Guitar magazine lists top 10 BLUES SLIDE guitarists!!
DEREK TRUCKS came in 3rd and DUANE ALLMAN 2nd!!!!
https://bluesrockreview.com/2023/11/top-10-blues-slide-guitar-players.html
For me personally this is number one. For me the tone, feel and energy from this young man has never been topped!!

@robertdee Polls and opinions! Great for starting debates and arguments! 😉 Some greats on that list, but I think Jack Pearson deserves a spot ... as does Warren Haynes. Glad to see Elmore on top - he's the actual and authentic source of slide mojo!

@rusty Yes Rusty. Jack Pearson never makes any polls that I've seen. Jack just isn't that famous. But he is famous with other guitar players especially those in Nashville!
Click on "Watch on YouTube" at the bottom of box.
And Warren should be up a ways on these polls and made the blues poll.

Are we allowed to introduce our own porn??? That's my 2010 R7 Chambered Les Paul in Candy Apple red into my 63 reissue Fender reverb tank into my Lil Dawg 5f4 tweed super with 2x12 weber p12N type speakers...if not I'll delete it

Posted by: @rusty@goldtop Nothing like amateur guitar porn to produce a 6-string boner! Do not delete this! 😉
(Didn't mean to imply "amateur" status towards your playing or arsenal. Home-grown, "girl next door" guitar porn!)
Amateur comes from the word for love so I'm all good with it....I'd love to see other peachy people's guitars and amp setups...

@goldtop nice rig goldtop. Love the Red LP.
No rules on what to post in this thread as far as I can see.
Anything guitar, bass, mandolin, violin or anything with strings is welcome. You have cool gear I would love to see it.
Have videos you think are tasty then please post em. All are welcome

I was checking out guitars on the Wildwood website today and they have Tom Murphy painted Les Pauls with Brazilian rosewood finger boards going for $19,999
