Here's a vid from 73 with Dickey playing a deluxe with the mini humbuckers. There were way more guitars than we all have seen or heard about. Just like the early 50's goldtop he had that was converted to a humbucker guitar. I saw it with a wham-o-bar on it and saw it again later in the R&R hall of fame with just stop tailpiece. The pickup routes were in the wrong place the the tail piece was too far back. The front pickup was so far forward that they cut the pickup ring and put the pickup right next the neck joint.

Many guitar players are the greatest ever to their fans who think they just can’t be topped - have been on a Roy Buchanan/Lonnie Mack kick lately, two greats who will never make a greatest list & may it stay that way🎸
👂Jimi & Duane have their own niche for brilliance/shortened lives/what was to be etc - then Clapton, Beck, Page, countless others - 1 ear hearing👂
🎸carry on w/this cool thread - knowledgeable folks here 🎸

I was always wondering what brand of guitar that was but never really invested any time into seeking out what it was...It's also on the cover of a 70's book about them I have call the Allman Brother Band biography in words and picturesPosted by: @rusty@goldtop Gregg's Veleno guitar looks like something you'd see at a KISS show. The models from the 70s are real bad expensive but I never liked the look. In the case of Gregg with the Allman Brothers - a lot of money to spend on a rhythm guitar!

@bill_graham Here is a Fender Stratocaster with TWO humbuckers factory installed at the Fender custom shop for Jimmy Herring.
To me it doesn't sound like a Les Paul or a Strat. But it sounds REAL GOOD. Love the fat tone.

@bill_graham Congratulations to Jim Irsay for having enough loose change to purchase just about every guitar with historical significance. I guess .

Yeah I would prefer working musicians to have these and use them at least in the studio but to give Irsay a little credit he does visual tours around the country so people can at least see them. Kinda like a mobile museum.
Better than a rich guy buying them and keeping them in a vault where they don't see the light of day I guess.

@bill_graham Dickey's SG sat under a bed for years.
Dickey gave it to Duane for slide so Duane wouldn't have to retune his Les Paul when Dickey decided to switch to a Les Paul himself.
Gregg gave it to a friend of Duane when Duane died.
Last time I saw Duane was at High Point College in 1971 and I don't recall Duane using the SG and this was months after Fillmore was recorded.
I do remember Juicy Carter played Sax on a few tunes. He was a close friend of Jaimoe.

Metallic blue 1963 Strat!!

Gary owned one. I've seen it in his collection which featured several Les Pauls. Video taken after he let go of the Greeny Les Paul.
This is the only video I've seen of Gary playing his blue Strat.

@robertdee I don't think Duane started using the SG until Spring/Summer 1971. Most people probably know that Graham Nash ended up owning it for a while and lent it to the RnR HOF in Cleveland.
It has since sold to a collector who has lent it out to a few exhibits such as The Met RnR exhibit (which I believe incorrectly states it was used on the Fillmore album):

Joe Bonamassa demos his 67 Gibson Flying V and 69 Fender Stratocaster from his collection

@porkchopbob Thanks Porkchopbob. It was late summer 1971 when I saw Duane for the last time. He probably played the SG on slide and I just can't remember. I do remember the Tobacco Burst Les Paul and it seems Duane didn't play slide that much that night. Perhaps Statesboro, Must Have Done, Don't Keep Me Wondering and some on Mountain Jam.
They also had a sax player I guess was Juicy Carter who played on several tunes.
Yes I knew Graham Nash owned the guitar for awhile. Didn't his wife buy it for him? For his birthday?
When Duane died, Gregg gave Dickey the Roland Resonator guitar Duane owned which he used on Little Martha and Dickey used on Pony Boy.
But Gregg gave the SG to a young man that Duane liked who hung around the band. I think that is right. And he admitted the guitar was under his bed for years.
Dickey was able to possess the guitar for awhile and Gibson used it in the custom shop to produce replicas called the "Brother to Brother" SG.
That guitar had a whammy bar when Dickey bought it. Dickey went to it for a few months mid 1970 after playing a Strat for 6 or 7 months. Dickey had the whammy bar removed but you could still see the holes in the body where it was attached to the body. The Brother To Brother replicas have the holes in the body near the bridge.
Dickey was playing Les Pauls by fall of 1970 so he actually played the SG for just a few months in the summer of 1970.
If anyone is interested, before the Stratocaster, Dickey played an ES-335 which was what Dickey played when the band formed. But I've read a roadie said Dickey misspoke. It was a 345.
Duane was playing a Strat when the ABB formed but it wasn't long until he found a GoldTop Les Paul with a big fat tone. Delaney Bramlett loved the Strat Duane was playing and had to play it everytime they were together. When Duane went to the GoldTop, Duane surprised Delaney Bramblett by giving him the Strat.

Norm's Rare Guitar of the day, 1983 Fender Dan Smith Stratocaster

@bill_graham Okay, I had to look up Dan Smith just to get some perspective on this.
With all due respect to Mr. Smith, these Strats (my opinion, here) were another attempt by the recently sold Fender guitar company at making cheaper instruments. I've seen these things for sale (Reverb Craigslist etc) and didn't know what they were.
As with most instruments. you probably grow accustomed to them to the point where you love 'em. Personally, I can't even call these things Stratocasters - but that's just me.
At the same time, I know that the Gibsons of this era (Norlin era) got panned and poo-pooed at the time and throughout guitar history. Now, the Norlin guitars are actually commanding more respect and higher price tags than more current (and likely better built) Gibsons.
People get nostalgic for things - especially old guitars (it seems). Those old black and white Silvertones that you see every now and then - they were never anything more than cheap-ass guitars for beginners and casual players who didn't want to fork over the price of "real" guitars. Mainly you (or I) see them being used for slide - as the necks are usually bowed beyond standard playing.
To sound like the old fart that I am - i remember when a Strat was a Strat and a Les Paul was a Les Paul. Now they come in more flavors than Baskin Robbins! Oh yeah, STAY OFF MY LAWN! 😉

Depends on what you are looking for I guess. I am old school so would love to have a 1950's Custom shop reissue Strat myself but I thought that Dan Smith Strat was a real looker and sounded pretty good in the video.
Nice writeup on the post CBS and Dan Smith Strats
https://www.stratcollector.com/news/dan-smith-stratocaster/
Agree that anything vintage seems to carry a premium these days and now the Norlin Les Paul's and CBS Strats are collectible when they used to considered substandard.
From what I read young musicians these day are moving away from the classic Gibsons and Fender models and looking for something more modern and different. Plenty of new boutique companies popping up to scratch that itch so Gibson and Fender are creating funky shapes and colors to compete. Sign of the times I guess.

14 most expensive guitars sold at auction of all time. Duane's Goldtop makes the list
Gilmour, Clapton, and Cobain have multiple entries. Interesting there are no Hendrix guitars on the list.

Joe Bonnamssa says right now he is playing and singing at the TOP of his skill ability. In other words Joe is playing and singing as good as he physically can!
And Joe says the minute he can no longer play and sing at that level is the minute he quits.
Joe isn't going to do like several other players and take the stage after his ability has declined due to age and/or health.
