Gary Rossington uses a Coricidan bottle for slide because of Duane.
https://www.guitarplayer.com/players/gary-rossington-free-bird

@bill_graham Good read. Yes Gary said Duane told him to use a Coricidan bottle. I knew that Ronnie Van Zant was very influenced by Gregg for his vocals but didn't know or remember they had met Duane.
Gary also said Duane was the best slide player he had heard.
I agree with that insomuch as the blues songs the Allman Brothers did back in the day. Duane on slide on things like Statesboro Blues, Done Somebody Wrong, Trouble No More, Don't Keep Me Wondering etc etc is tops in my book.
Players such as Derek, Jack, Warren, Ry Cooder evolved more I think one could say but they lived to celebrate their 25 and 30th birthdays. Duane did not.

1970's Gibson Les Paul Deluxe history
https://www.guitarworld.com/features/70s-gibson-les-paul-deluxe-history

Interesting read about the Les Paul Deluxe. I have never seen anyone play a Les Paul with those mini humbuckers. I bet it sounded good.
Speaking of sounding good, crank up good headphones with this real fine version of KEY TO THE HIGHWAY!!
This is real good!

@bill_graham Thanks Bill. I've seen footage of them and saw Thin Lizzy once and probably didn't look at their guitars carefully. I just assumed the pickups were the usual humbuckers.

@bill_graham Also the late, Barry Bailey of Atlanta Rhythm Section ... but I already done told ya that! 😉

The Les Paul Deluxe story that I read was that after Gibson emptied the Epiphone factory they all these mini humbuckers that the didn't know what to do with so they put them in the Les Paul's that they had already routed for P90's, hence the P90 cover pick up ring.

@robertdee Perhaps more interesting - he tends to play the bridge pickup. A lot of LP players opt for the neck pickup.
Barry and the ARS - incredible band!

Norm's Rare Guitars Guitar of the day. 1987 American Fender Standard Stratocaster

Why American made Martin Guitars are so expensive

@bill_graham Martins are fantastic guitars! I've got two of 'em that I wouldn't trade for anything. Expensive? Maybe, but Gibson seems to be a bit proud of their own acoustics. 😉

Restoration of a Gibson 1959 Melody Maker.

@bill_graham My first guitar was a single cutaway Melody Maker. I think mine had two pickups? It's been a while.
Not a great guitar for a band situation really. I've posted before that once my bandmate got a Les Paul that I could no longer be heard. I miss it - wish I still had it in my collection. Short story - I was coerced out of it. Severely coerced! 😉
Great looking guitar!

A perfect 1952 Fender Blackguard Telecaster
This shop has nice guitars if you have $$$ to burn

@bill_graham That is some classic Tele!!
G. E. Smith plays several types of guitars but says he is a Tele man for the most part. And two fine players go before G. E.

Alternatives to the Fender Stratocaster
I own a Japanese made 1987 ESP Mirage Custom HSS "Superstrat" and a 2001 Korean made ESP LTD MH-301 double humbucker neckthru both with 1980's pointy headstocks and they are beautifully made guitars. But if someone has their heart set on a Fender they will not scratch that itch I think.

@robertdee While I do not think that there is any real way to determine an absolute "greatest" guitar player - I think most of the polls tend to focus on players who are household name types. While most on these lists are fine players, the lists become more of a popularity contests among players in bands who have had a lot of commercial success.
Players like Danny Gatton, Steve Morse, Cousin Kenny Vaughn and his pardner, Marty Stuart (as well as a ton of other players) rarely show up in these polls because ... a lot of folks just aren't familiar with them. Then, there's the fact that Chet Atkins never seems to show up at all! IMO - there can be no discussion of great guitar players without the inclusion of Chet!
Yeah, it'd be tough to find a better player than Danny Gatton!

@bill_graham I agree. I am reluctant to buy that beautiful sunburst Les Paul still on the wall at the big music store here because it says Epiphone on the head stock. It's expensive but much cheaper than the Gibson Les Pauls on the wall.
All my pictures of Duane and Dickey, the headstock says Gibson.
There are a number of makes of hot guitars that fall into the super Strat catagory. Ibanez probably sells the most and I'm told ESP and Charvel are big sellers too. And are very popular with players in the heavy metal and hard rock world. Strong loud pickups plus a whammy and lighter weight.
I'm 76 years old and to me for electrics it's like Chevrolet and Ford. It has to be Gibson or Fender.
If I did buy a Dodge maybe a Paul Reed Smith or Yamaha or Gretsch

Re Danny Gatton being the greatest guitar player, or Hendrix etc, I think there should be two categories, greatest guitarist, which I myself, don't know, and the other category, greatest music maker on guitar, which from I myself, from all I've heard so far, has to be the mighty Duane, himself.
