@robertdee Imagine how mind-blowing this was at the time. Television was the hot new technology of the day ... watching somebody play that new-fangled guitar that looked like some sort of rocket ship! I'm diggin those table castanets, too!

Bomb clip - love that twang - have never seen table maracas b4, wow🤩almost like he’s typing
had an album back in the day, More Big Guitars From Texas, that was all about stuff like this clip - thx for sharing, yippeeayo, yipeeayea…..

@rusty It was 1956 on the Lawrence Welk Show.Â
Geritol drinking Champaign loving old people digging a Stratocaster!! It was 12 years later when Jimi would have made them cough up a stomach full of Geritol with what he did with the same guitar!!

A few years ago, one of the young guitar players at the big music store here who is a Ibanez guy and a huge Steve Via fan told me he actually liked some of the early 1960's surf music once in awhile and all those guys back then played straight ( no bends or vibrato) except the whammy bar on those Strats they all played.Â
Said his favorite was Walk Don't Run.Â
I researched that when I got home and the lead player on most of the Ventures stuff in the early 60's didn't play a Strat!!!! He he. It was a Fender Jaguar!:)

Nobody played a strat then, if not for Hendrix the strat might have been discontinued.

@njpaulc Yes that's what I heard. Buddy Holly helped sales a little but when Hendrix came around it suddenly became the best selling electric for years.Â
The Les Paul had some lean years too. It's hard to imagine most people buying something else.Â
Those Fender Jaguars on those old surf tunes sounds like a Strat to me.Â

It looks like the update column on the right doesn't update unless you sign in. I missed that Hendrix part where it said Hendrix was the greatest and no other of the greats would say they were better. I think it was Jimmy Johnson who said him and the young Duane were at his concert where Duane said he could cut him. Maybe he didn't think that later. I never listen to Hendrix anymore. He feels like all sound effects to me now. That's where Duane stands alone for me. He played the guitar to make music: everybody else by comparison seems to play music to play the guitar

I misidentified the percussion instrument - it is a table castanet. This is a stationary version of the hand instruments used in Flamenco and other forms. They are often used in orchestras and other large production groups. You can hear them in Elton John's, "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding".Posted by: @stephenBomb clip - love that twang - have never seen table maracas b4, wow🤩almost like he’s typing

I knew marracas wasn't right! Took me several days to remember the actual term!

1960 Les Paul Bolin Burst owned by Joe Bonamassa

@bill_graham Great story. All of these amazing vintage guitars in the collections of uber-wealthy fans and afficionados ... that never (reallly) get played. Kinda like seeing amazing and beautiful animals living behind bars or in tanks at zoos and aquariums. I'm happy for thee collectors, but instruments are for making music - not hanging on walls or stuffed in closets!

@rusty I agree Rusty. Like seeing vintage cars or airplanes in a museum. They just sit and never make any noise.Â
Rolling Stone just released the "TOP 250 GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME" list.Â
Jimi was NUMBER UNO!!!! He always is it seems.Â

Keith Richards owns 3,000 guitars!! I can't find it this morning but several years ago, Keith said about 250 of them are Les Pauls. Wonder if he would give me just one! Still have 249 Les Pauls left Keith!!Â

@robertdee I DO NOT advocate theft or burglary but if Keef went away and accidentally left his door unlocked ... do ya think he'd miss ONE Les Paul? 😉

@rusty No he wouldn't!! The old interview I remember he said when asked about Les Pauls " About 250". Apparently Keef doesn't know off the top of his head if it's 248 or 253 or what.Â
I don't advocate stealing either. I am proud to o say at 76 years of age I've never stolen anything or been in jail.Â
It's shocking to me to read about all the gear in interviews I've read over the years that has been stolen right off the stage and in the case of Warren Haynes' Fender Custom Shop Eric Clapton Stratocaster with the red headstock, never to be seen again after extensive searching guitar stores, music stores and pawn shops.Â
And it was stolen off an Allman Brothers Band stage. Where were the roadies and Kirk West. Could be as easy as they were busy looking at something else.Â
This is it. I think it's been missing since 1992.Â

Norman's Rare Guitar of the day 1956 Fender Stratocaster and vintage Rivera amp
Â

@bill_graham That is some nice playing. Like the tone too.Â
That guitar is amazingly clean and without blemish for a 1956!! Guitar is 67 years old!!Â
Look at Dickey's neck on his 1956 Stratocaster hard tail! Lots of road wear!Â

Acoustic guitar brands rated

@bill_graham Nice read. Not sure that I agree with the list top to bottom, but that's what opinions are for! Â
I always wanted an Ovation ... right up until I got one. You can't play them sitting down - the round back causes the guitar to slump over into your lap. The back - constructed of the material that is used to make helicopter blades! Not organic (like wood) - so that when the wood begins to "morph" (climate, humidity etc.) the back doesn't move with it. They do sound good, though. FYI - I returned mine to the shop where it came from - they allowed me to swap for something else.
