@robertdee Mark Kimbrell played a Guild Starfire when he was in Oteil's band.  James McMurtry plays Guild acoustics and electrics almost exclusively.

Pickups? Not just Humbucker vs P-90 vs Single Coil these days. Many kinds of pickups available from the manufacturer and aftermarket so you can pull a switch.

@rusty Joe to me was as fast and clean at 12 as he is now. I'm not sure Joe selected the right notes to string together a couple of times but it was high energy playing.

Oh no. This man is one of the all time best guitar players technically. He had a heart attack on stage.

Best guitar solo in two European polls.

Here is my all time favorite rock guitar solo. This is kicking butt baby!!!!

And the second solo on this is outstanding electric guitar playing!!

I can see how even Clapton and Jeff Beck were so intimidated by Hendrix in the late 1960's. This was a kind of high octane guitar not seen before.

Most guitar players are intimidated by Jeff Beck according to what I read at his death.

@bill_graham Nice guitar. I've always thought those Les Paul bursts are the prettiest guitars out there.

Didn't Eric Clapton give his beano to Susan Tedeshi and she uses it some on stage?

@bill_graham The only guy who tops Joe I'm aware of this morning is Keith Richards. 250 Les Pauls among 6,000 guitars!!!

But Keith has them in storage and they basically just sit. And unfortunately I never see any footage of them.

Keith and Mick are worth over $500 million each. And over the weekend I read Mick said he was leaning toward donating the Rolling Stones music catalog to charity as his kids don't need $500 million dollars which is what the Stones music catalog has been appraised to be worth.

Perhaps if I were an offspring of Mick or Keith, I would not smile about that!!😊

@robertdee I envy Keef for so many things, but I have to point out that the accumulation of so many guitars is likely a sickness and an obsession.  I can say this for I, too am a sufferer.

I'll never have the finances to match Keef's (or Joe's) collection but I seem to forever be on the quest for ... just one more.  I think my recent addition of my yard sale Guild brings my personal collection up to 14 - a far, far cry from the numbers hoarded by these famous guys.

My "Holy Grail" guitar is a Gibson ES335.  I tell myself that I'll stop after that ... then I realize that I still do not own a Gibson Les Paul (STANDARD!) or a genuine American Strat (I do have a "naturalized" MIM refitted with American hardware and pickups).

A few years ago someone on this board gave the disease the name of G.A.S. - or, Guitar Acquisition Syndrome.  I am among the sufferers here, but Keef and Joe are the poster children!

@rusty Yes I think it may be a sickness. People spend more money than they should collecting all kinds of things and end up with an amazing number. I think Eric Clapton collects Ferraris. Very expensive habit.

Sometimes it's easy to forget just how very rich some of our music heros are now. Clapton according to Celebrity Net Worth is worth $450 million dollars and during touring years and when he has a hit album out, averages $45 million dollars in income annually.

Warren Haynes said he thought Allen Woody was excessive owning so many bass and other types of guitars until he ( Warren) realized he is buying something several times a year but never getting rid of any guitars. So the number is getting somewhat large.

Devon Allman said when his father died he was surprised Gregg owned 42 guitars. And he left all of them to Devon.

Dickey Betts once in the early 2000s said counting acoustics and resonator guitars, he owns about 40. I think 10 were Les Pauls. He mentioned some Strats and Teles and other Gibsons including a beautiful 1961 ES-335 Dot Neck!!!

Here it is in Dickey's hands if you haven't seen this.

Wildwood Guitar exclusive 1960 Gibson Les Paul Murphy Lab tobacco burst. Really beautiful guitar with a perfect amout of stripping IMHO.

Although the volume/tone knobs don't look like 1960's with the silver top inserts.

I lust for a darkburst like this one but at $10,699.00 a bit rich for my blood. No funds right now so maybe when I retire if I am nice to the wife.

Nice, but for $10K, it'd better have tires ... or play itself or somethin'!

All's I'm sayin' is that I could find 2 or even 3 very nice guitars for that money.  😉

@bill_graham According to a long interview with Jack Pearson, he paid $87.00 for this guitar. Said the salesman at the music store tried to talk him out of it.

Jack said it vibrated like crazy acoustically which is good. So if it didn't sound good plugged in Jack said he'd change the pickups. But he liked the pickups. He did rewire some of the knobs and moved the neck pickup knob to the middle pickup knob. And that was about it.

Take a listen. $87.00 used. Oh it was manufactured in Singapore for Fender's Squire Bullet Stratocaster line.

The salesman at the big music store here said today "Of course the salesman tried to talk that Nashville guitarist (Jack Pearson ) out of buying that Squire Strat for $87.00.  He wanted to sell him a $10,000 dollar Les Paul, ES-335 or PRS Santana Custom."

In that long interview I watched last night, Jack Pearson talked about the bands he and Leroy Parnell put together. Mentioned starting out with a Les Paul copy guitar then getting the money for a GIBSON Les Paul not a cheap copy ,an SG, a Marshall Amp and the music store man who would hook him up with good gear and let Jack pay it off monthly and the times he got stiffed financially on the road. Didn't get paid a dime. The time he, Leroy and the band were splitting up the gig money and it was only $1.72 for each member. And a homeless drunk in there said " I made more than that begging on the street today".

And having two nights at a club and you come in the next day and your Marshall head and cabinets you just got paid off have been stolen. Jack Pearson has had a lot of years in the band business that has been enough to make a man quit and try some other line of work.

@robertdee Jack probably sounds as good on a $89.00 Squier as he would on that $12,000.00 Gibson Murphy Lab Les Paul!

Flipping this around a little, a $12,000.00 guitar by itself will not make anybody a better player.  It would certainly be wasted on me.  Like buyin' a Water-Pik when you only have one tooth!

@rusty Rusty I sure wish I had the Les Paul in this picture. I love the red color plus the zebra (white/black) humbuckers look so cool.

Dickey played a Les Paul in 1972, 73 and 74 which had them and it was a red burst. Beautiful guitar and my favorite at the time. When I saw my first Win, Loose or Draw tour show, I was surprised and disappointed to see Dickey playing a Gold Top. I eventually made my way to the sound board and saw a chance to ask him and he said Dickey switched because the beautiful burst with zebra pickups just wouldn't stay in tune as well as Dickey required.

The Les Paul in this article about price slashes is my number one if I had it. And I also really like that black Stratocaster. Just like David Gilmore's. I've always thought Gilmore is one of the best I've seen.
