Here is Captain Beyond with Rod Evans on vocals. Rod was later hired by Deep Purple and later fired by Purple.

Rhino on lead guitar. He was the other guitarist in The Second Coming with Dickey, Berry and Reese.

And Bobby Caldwell on drums who was one of the better drummers

I saw them in 1972. They were good musicians but didn't seem to have some real good material. Guess that may be why they aren't well remembered today.

Evans was vocalist in Deep Purple mark I before he was in Captain Beyond. Gillan and Glover joined DP after Evans and bassist Nick Simper were sacked

Depends on what you mean by good material.

Captain Beyond's first album is considered a rock classic now and was very influential for the hard rock guitar players that followed.

After the first album Caldwell left and the second album was more jazzier and Latin influenced. Very different from the first but had some great music on it IMHO. The band split after that album and reformed for forgettable  album in 1978 without Evans on vocals.

Here is the second album

@bill_graham I guess it was I wasn't familiar with their songs in 1972. I didn't hear a Layla or Smoke On The Water or Sweet Home Alabama.

But no question I was impressed with the musicianship and singing.

@bill_graham Enjoyed this read. I have a Gibson SG. I'm thinking about getting an Epiphone Les Paul. Cheaper but looks good, sounds good when I tried one.

Fender not returning to the NAMM show this year or any time soon

https://www.guitarworld.com/news/fender-andy-mooney-namm-return

Looks like more gear companies are going virtual for their marketing.

Sad to see the in person trade shows dying  but I guess it makes sense financially.

I always wanted go just to check out all the gear and check out the guest musicians but could never justify the cost.

Joe Bonamassa signature 1948 Fender Dual Professional.

https://www.guitarworld.com/news/joe-bonamassa-fender-dual-48-dual-professional-jb-edition-signature-amp

Looks like a cool amp but how many can afford the $3499.00 retail?

For $4000.00 you do get two tickets and a meet and greet with Joe's at one of his concerts

@bill_graham Sometimes Joe will give a meet and greet winner a guitar or amp.Joe owns hundreds and guitars and amps.

I've seen Joe. Tickets are expensive and he is pretty good live. I like the fact he is a serious gear head the most about him.

METALLICA's KIRK HAMMETT Partners With GIBSON To Create His 1979 Flying V

For 130 years, Gibson has shaped sound across generations and genres of music, becoming one of the most relevant, played, and loved guitar brands around the world. Gibson is proud to introduce the next global release in its partnership with Kirk Hammett, legendary guitarist of the multi-platinum selling, and Grammy Award-winning band METALLICA. For the first time, Gibson has collaborated with Kirk to create one of the most important heavy metal guitars of all time, his beloved 1979 Gibson Flying V. The Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V from Gibson Custom Shop is now available worldwide through premium Gibson dealers and via Gibson.com.

METALLICA fans worldwide are familiar with Kirk Hammett's 1979 Flying V. It was Kirk's first-ever Gibson and established his passion for Gibson guitars. Its purchase was inspired by famous Flying V players Kirk admired and because he was looking for a fuller sound. And what a sound! Kirk still plays the original guitar to this day, and used it on all the early METALLICA albums, including "Kill 'Em All", "Ride The Lightning", "Master Of Puppets", "…And Justice for All" and The Black Album, making it one of the most important heavy metal guitars of all time. Only 200 were hand-made by the expert luthiers of the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee. The Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V from the Gibson Custom Shop is artfully aged to match the original by the Murphy Lab and was inspired by this legendary guitar. In addition to case candy developed in collaboration with Kirk, an SKV Flying V Case complete with gaff tape and METALLICA museum tags which match Kirk's original is included along with a Certificate Of Authenticity photo that is hand-signed by Kirk Hammett himself.

One of the most iconic rock guitarists of our generation, Hammett has been the lead guitarist and a contributing songwriter for METALLICA since 1983. Before joining METALLICA, he formed and named the metal band EXODUS.

When Hammett's partnership with Gibson was first announced in 2021, Kirk said about the collaboration: Yes, it's official. I have become an official Gibson endorser and it's been a long time coming. I'm really, really happy about it. And when I think about it, I've been playing Gibson, really, since the late '70s when I bought my very first black Flying V, in 1979. I could barely play it and it felt funny putting it on because of the V wings. But I knew that it was the guitar for me, and within three or four days, I was just inseparable from that guitar. And I still have it to this day. Gibson guitars have been with me for pretty much 95 percent of my musical life. I've revered so many Gibson players in my life too, and the Gibson sound has been so inspiring to me. And at times, I didn't even know it.

"I remember when I first started playing guitar, I was just blown away by the sound of Jeff Beck's guitar — 'Let Me Love You', off [the 1968 JEFF BECK GROUP debut album] 'Truth'. Pretty much the opening lick, I was just, like, 'How did he get that sound?' And I remember it was one of the very first guitar licks I learned, very simple lick, G position, blues lick, but I could never get it to sound the way that sounded with that tone, that attack, that distortion... And it wasn't until decades later that I realized it was because he was using a certain guitar, it was a Les Paul Standard. And then it all made sense to me."

Hammett went on to say that the time was "right" for his partnership with Gibson.

"When I really think about it, Gibson guitars have been on every single METALLICA album," he said. "And primarily on the first three albums. It was all Gibson-powered because all I had was my Flying V, and then I had a Strat copy, and I had a Jackson. The Jackson didn't really come to me 'til 'Master Of Puppets'. That Gibson Flying V was a real workhorse in the studio for the first four or five albums, and then after that, I started playing vintage Gibsons from 'Load' on, and I started playing Standards almost all the time."

Kirk added that he loves Flying Vs. "I think I have almost every '70s Flying V, from '79 to '81,' he revealed. "I really like that particular run of Flying Vs. There are a lot of cool colors, and I like the design, I like the weight, I like the sound. I have one of the very first Flying V's from 1957, a prototype."

@bill_graham Bill here is another guitarist the young players who hang out at the big music store here in my area claim is a heck of technician on electric guitar. More advanced than anyone who was ever in the Allman Brothers including Duane and Derek Trucks and same for Eric Clapton and SRV. This player is Joe Satriani/Steve Vai level. I've heard the name but this is my first time to hear him play. What do you think?

Lots of videos including some vintage from Detroit 1976 and Houston 1977.

The Joe Perry Group starts touring next weekend with Gary Cherone (Extreme and Van Halen) on vocals. I have great seats to see them at Foxwoods Casino in CT so really looking forward to the concert.

@bill_graham I only saw Jimi once. 1967 or 8 and he opened for Monkees.

It's hard to remember but I think the guitar he played was a white Strat. Played it upside down left-handed so the whammy bar was up top. It was absolutely a Strat but I could be off on the color. Could have been yellow but I'm going with white.

Jimi had several Marshall amps and Jimi's Strat was LOUD!!!!!!!!!!! I mean loud loud. Wonder if he used earplugs. If not if he had lived and kept that up he would have been deaf by the time he was 40.

This may be the same guitar. Jimi would run his arm up and down the neck occasionally and notice at the end he runs the neck back and forth against the microphone stand. Richie Blackmore sometimes runs his arm up and down the neck.

@bill_graham If I had an authentic 1959 LP I would sell it. Maybe for $300,000 or a bit more.

Then I would take the money and buy about 20 new guitars. Les Pauls, SGs, Strats and Teles and perhaps a Paul Reed Smith and some other makes. Still have $200,000 plus in the bank so I would take a months vacation to various European cities and sit on the remaining $150,000 for a rainy day.

That is rather optimistic for a man 76 I guess.

Duane Allman traded a GoldTop for a 1959 Sunburst but liked the pickups better in his GoldTop so switch them to the 1959. But by 1971 Duane had moved to a tobacco burst LP with the world DUANE pressed into the back of the body and it was old frets.

I noticed in the article Gibson admitted the wood was a bit different in each instrument so the tone would vary.

Maybe that is why when Dickey decided he liked what Duane was getting with a Les Paul, Dickey decided to get one. But as Kim Payne and Red Dog said, Dickey got his first one in Detroit but Dickey didn't like it. He moved to another and went through several before Dickey found his Holy Grail but it was a 1957!!

Dickey had a few that wouldn't stay in tune. According to Red Dog one of Dickey's Les Pauls was giving such a fit he smashed it. Red Dog took the pieces and put them in the dumpster outside of wherever they were playing.

EDDIE VAN HALEN's 'Hot For Teacher' Guitar Could Fetch Between $2 Million And $3 Million At Auction

https://blabbermouth.net/news/eddie-van-halens-hot-for-teacher-guitar-could-fetch-between-2-million-and-3-million-at-auction

The guitar Eddie Van Halen used in the music video for VAN HALEN's "Hot For Teacher" is going up for auction at Sotheby's.

The custom-made Kramer axe has a minimum bid of $1.8 million, and is valued at between two and three million dollars.

According to Sotheby's, stage-used and -filmed guitar was custom made by Paul Unkert of Kramer Guitars for Eddie Van Halen, including important innovations customized for Eddie's evolving guitar technique. It served as one of Eddie Van Halen's primary guitars in 1983 and 1984. The guitar was gifted by Eddie Van Halen to the band's retiring drum tech Gregg Emerson around 1990. Emerson subsequently gave the guitar to his nephew, who sold the guitar to Neal's Music in Huntington Beach, California. Neal's Music then sold the instrument to its current owner.

The guitar comes with a letter of provenance by Unkert, a signed photograph from Eddie Van Halen, its original case with tour and Warner Brothers tags, and the strait jacket and white gloves worn by Van Halen in the video.

Unkert's accompanying letter details the guitar's history: "The 'Hot For Teacher' Van Halen [guitar] was built by me at the Kramer Green Grove Road Plant in Neptune, NJ around 1982-1985/ #CO176. Look for 'Unk' stamps on Neck and Body. It was my last project for Ed and Kramer."

Bidding for the guitar closes next Tuesday, April 18.

"Hot For Teacher" appeared on VAN HALEN's album "1984". The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) objected to the song after its original release, calling for it to be pulled from both the radio and television, due to the track's sexually suggestive lyrics referring to sex with a teacher, and a female teacher stripping in the video, among other issues.

In 2009, "Hot For Teacher" was named the 36th best hard rock song of all time by VH1.

The "Hot For Teacher" video was filmed at John Marshall High School in Los Angeles, California. Because the school had been shut down due to insufficient funds at the time the video was recorded, VAN HALEN not only paid to rent the school for four days of filming but they also contributed money to the city to help get it reopene
