Everything you never wanted to know about amp power tubes
https://www.guitarworld.com/features/power-tubes-explained

@bill_graham Wow the more you read into that pickup article, the more complex it becomes. No wonder many professional guitarists are always experimenting and have a lot of guitars for different moods. I can see it would be easy to never stop experimenting with all the styles and makes of pickups and guitars. Then you move into the world of pedals?? How do you ever know if you've arrived at what you want or if just one more change somewhere will improve you sound?Â
I liked how Dickey sounded and after he finally found a Les Paul that had everything pretty much right, Dickey stayed in the neck pickup. He said so. He practically NEVER used the bridge pickup on a Les Paul.Â
Many Les Paul players are on the bridge pickup for their solos. I think Duane Allman was one. Back when I first was hooked on the band, I didn't pay any attention to what pickup someone was using so have no memory where Duane usually played his solos. But Dickey was neck or sometimes in the middle position on the switch.Â
Here it looks as if Duane is in the bridge position then switches to the middle position after his solo.Â

Just curious if any of you all had any low wattage tube amps you use or have played through. I have had/owned the Epi Valve Junior 5watt head with matching 112. Vox ac4tvh with matching 112. I have played through Vox Night Train 15watt head, VHT Special 6 Ultra Head, Orange rocker 15 watt head, and Fender Excelsior 115 combo.....which I really dug and would like to get one. I thought it had little more clean head room to play with compared to the others, but they are all really nice.

Always wanted a Marshall but not very practical for me to have a Half stack in my family room  since I only hack around playing my guitars at home.
Germino amps makes hand-built copies of some of the most popular vintage Marshall's that get good reviews.
Owner Greg Germino has tremendous knowledge about Marshall amps and you can read a great interview in Tonequest if you click on the picture of the issue at the bottom of the following link.

I have a couple of low wattage amps
Gibson GA5 reissue- 5W single ended amp with a single 12AX7 and EL84. Not a bad little practice amp but can be a little buzzy at full volume.
Also have a little 1960's Alamo Capri 3W amp that uses 3- tubes, rectifier, preamp and power, that were common in vintage radios. Got it off ebay for $50 and just recapped it and added a 3 wire cord. I think it originally came with an 8" speaker but someone put a 10" Celestion in it. Sounds pretty good for what it is but I need to fix the tone control as it doesn't do anything. Probably a bad coupling cap as they used cheap ceramics or bad solder joint.

Posted by: @bill_grahamBest Orange amps
I played through an Orange, solid state, a few weeks ago at a local guitar shop. I was there actually wanting to test run a PRS SE Starla. I am not sure if it was guitar , amp, or the combo of the two, but just was not feeling it. It was not a big shop, pretty much the majority of the amps were Orange, I think there were some others. I need to revisit it and give it another run. I have not played a PRS in along time, and the pups in these, from what I heard on demos and read they tend to be more "chimey" in a way.
Â
Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Just curious if any of you good people have ever done a "project " guitar. Something you totally wanted to mod out to your own specs, maybe something that just need some tlc to get it back into playing shape, etc....
I have been thinking about doing that. Git my eye on a few things where I have some ideas , with, pups, pots, knobs, tuners, bridge, nobs, possibly paint, pickguard and along those lines. Really not into a total rebuild. I think I would need some guidance with fret dressing/ re fretting and routing of the body for different pickups. Just wanted to see what you all thought. Thanks!!!

CRAIGSLIST SCAMMER - UPDATEPosted by: @bill_grahamPosted by: @rusty@jszfunk This is the Cragslisting in Jacksonville, FL for the 1995 Les Paul Custom:
https://jacksonville.craigslist.org/msg/d/jacksonville-1995-gibson-les-paul/7569079371.html
Â
$1,500.00??? I can't find anything similar anywhere under $3K! If this thing is still listed after Christmas (next Monday), I might have to make an inquiry. I figure that as long as I don't give a credit card number or agree to meet in a dark alley after midnight I might be safe. Anybody want to ride shotgun with me on this?
Beautiful guitar! If it has no neck repairs and the neck is straight that is a steal of a deal.
Â
Yes, as I suspected the 1995 wine red LP Custom for $1,500.00 was evidently indeed too good to be true. Click on the link this morning to find that the listing has been "flagged for removal". Found another listing (not gonna post link) for a LP Standard for only $900.00. What possible joy or outcome can a$$holes get by posting fake and sham offers like this? Â
Related news (perhaps): My wife is a collector of ... all sorts of stuff. She watches You-Tube videos of people who pick junk from thrift stores, dumpsters and other gold mines. Yesterday I saw a show where a guy found what certainly looked like a Gibson LP Custom with P-90s in a pile of junk by the side of the road. As best that I could tell by watching, it passed most of the smell tests (2 screws in the truss rod cover, "thin" Gibson logo - all of the easily visible stuff). When he removed the pot' covers on the back - wiring looked most certainly like Chines poo-poo (and I ain't talkin' about an appetizer).  So beware of counterfeits and deals that are obviously just too good to be true!
I am still in the Les Paul hunt, but I'll likely stop searching Craigs List.
