I thought that was a very objective review. Couldn't agree more with Gregg, and the Doobies for that matter, changing up his set list. Knowing the songs and their order just kills a show for me.
I've seen Gregg a lot, so that is a big factor with my frustration. I would not go out of my way to see him. That is not saying, at all, that he is not great....because he is. Adding Marc and the two new horn players really rounds out his live sound nicely. My friends that have gone with us to see Gregg love the shows. But... he has an entire cd of superb blues music that would be nice to hear live. Hell, do what he did when he was in the Nighthawks... Crossroads,
etc.... Not a big "Angel" or "Bullets Fly " fan.... I do however love Oncoming Traffic, Please Call Home, These Day... It's easy for me, or anyone else, to say "change up the set list". We aren't GA, or in his shoes and his band is not the ABB. I guess he's doing it his way. I say all of this out of love for Gregg.

Nice review. I've seen Gregg solo probably a dozen times and the Doobies around five times. I saw both of them last year and I have to disagree about seeing them again..............they were both so good that I'm looking forward to the Sonoma Music Festival in N. California on October 4th: The Doobie Brothers w/ Michael McDonald, Gregg Allman & Friends, Edgar Winter and Tommy Castro.

I honestly thought I'd be bored at Gregg's show last year because of exactly the reasons you mentioned: The tired set list. I WAS bored when I saw him in 2013. But the new band is SO good and the new arrangements he has done on his tunes, incorporating the three piece horn section, were so great that I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

As for the Doobies, they were second billed last year to Boston, with Don Felder opening (it originally was billed with Steppenwolf as opener and I was looking forward to that, but they cancelled after a contract dispute). The Doobies for me were easily the highlight of the show. They are very high energy and as you said, the vocals are very good (comparing any band to CSN vocally is an extremely high complement). They've got SO many good tunes, that I won't mind hearing them again in October, especially with Michael McDonald added to the mix (they're very good without him; he should make them even better).

Here's GA & Friends doing Just Before The Bullets Fly, I shot this last year @ The Santa Cruz Blues Festival:

Gregg seems to sound real good, but the setlists are tired out...He needs to start switching things up.

Gregg's got a tight band.

Agree about your set lists issue

Once you've heard the band play all of its major hits live, there's not much more to hear.

For this co-headlining tour with the Doobie Brothers, does anyone know if Gregg's band always plays first?
