To be fair, if the "Allman Brother's Band" can play for 15 years without Dickey Betts ... I see no reason why it can't also play for a period of time without Butch Trucks.

But to reiterate, both Gregg and Dickey have acknowledged that the Allman Brothers are over. Perhaps any new collaboration might be under a different format and name. Perhaps. Cool

something along the lines of the Please Call Home DVD, filmed informally at night at the cemetery, w/the boys wanting to be there, just to say hi, reacquaint/reminisce & have a play for Duane & BO, with family/friends present

that'd be awesome -- hopefully personal differences could be put aside for something like this -- at their advanced ages a tour>Beacon residency might be a bit much -- ABB forever

Saying a band is over just gives it more market value. They could play without Butch but if there is serious money he will be there.

My read of the comments--which may be totally wrong--is that Gregg has already talked to Dickey and that they will go out with Chuck in 2017 when he's done with the Stones.

It would be great to see Dickey back.

"I believe Gregg and Dickey can get along for awhile, but Mr. Betts and Butch,....isn't that the hitch in the giddy-up?"

-------

Is anyone else surprised that Butch and Friends sets have included several Dickey songs including "Blue Sky"?

what about the other 3?
No offense but this thread is patently ridiculous
they're in their 70s & retired -- if they had to go through 12 months of preparation......pretty sure they'd pass
people have pointed to "GD 50" saying what a big moneymaker an Allman Brothers Reunion and Tour would be -- I for 1 don't see it that way --
Peace & I love the ABB

I still question what the point what would be. Could they get together and run through a nostalgic trip through their greatest hits? Yes, but how would that enhance their legacy? Is new material possible? I guess I don't get what the draw is here.

even if you just play in a room with no audience.

This is the possibility I find most alluring....Throw Chuck Leavell into the mix, a Baby Grand in a living room, with acoustic guitars, a little percussion and some type of keyboard for Gregg. Film it. Professionally. The opening shot being with Chuck, sitting at the piano, tinkering with some all too familiar Allman melody...."Hi, I'm Chuck Leavell" and I have some friends I'd like you to meet"....to the camera swinging around to include the remaining four sitting on couches and chairs in the room....Stories of times long gone, acoustic jamming, in the truest sense of the word, just playing old traditionals, trading vocals and solos...like long lost friends with so much to say and the good fortune to have guitars in their hands and Ivory at their fingertips...

That would be cool.

Based on what we saw at Peachfest, we don't have to worry about the quality of anyone's playing. All are still top notch IMO. Dickey is the only question mark. And I bet his poor playing in recent years is due to low morale, and a reunion with ABB might raise his spirits, and we'll hear the dickey of old even at his current age...I hope. Which is why I was so put off by Derek's comments about shows "almost killing Butch", "boxers past their prime", and many other quotes that implied the originals are past their prime. Wrong Derek! I wish he would've left that part out of his explanations, and only talked about his desire for new material.

"Butch: Playing the way I do with my leg constantly going, my knee has just taken a pounding over 40 years. And it finally got down to bone rubbing bone, so I had a total right knee replacement a year ago. I can’t get through a metal detector, I’ve got a metal knee. I had some spurs taken out of my left shoulder a couple of years ago and I have osteoarthritis in my right elbow. I also can’t straighten my right arm out because after moving and swinging so much and all that pounding, it’s just kind of getting worn out. I’ve got a huge lump on the inside of my right elbow from the fluid oozing out due to all the pressure. I have arthritis in the fourth toe on my right foot because when I play bass drum that’s the first toe to hit the ground and it has taken the full brunt of it over the years.

About halfway through the Beacon run I will be so damn exhausted, I won’t even know how I’m going to walk up those three stairs to get to my drums. But about halfway through the first song something happens and I’m an 18-year-old kid again. And for the next two or three hours I can tear the world up, I just feel like Superman and for about an hour after the show I’m riding that high. Then an hour or two later I crash and all I can do is lie around and moan and groan until the next night when we do it again."

To be fair, during the bands last couple of years we saw various members MISS SHOWS (Beacon and other places) due to various reasons. I'm talking about more than one member. As a matter fact - the final two Allman Brothers shows that I attended (Beacon run 2013) were without Gregg.

Yes, there were comparisons to athletes who had outplayed their longevity. There were fears expressed that the ABB (or certain members) might start playing like B.B. King (who took a LOT of criticism from "blues fans" on these pages).

Then the band (or certain members) began to outwardly express ... "boredom" with the project - which brought about all the hoopla of the grand finale shows at the Beacon.

Comparisons to a boxer? A band has to be able to stand on its feet for the duration of a TOUR. They have to be able and willing to "go the distance". Gregg's amazing rejuvenation (with his own band) and Butch's stellar recent performances certainly reflect newfound strength.

As a long-time, die-hard fan I am not ready to see multiple factions of the band (a la the Beach Boys) playing basically the same material. I also feel that the band hung up their guns at a good time. I accept the fact that if they do reunite/reformat etc - it will likely be to recoup the pile of cash that they left on the table at the finale shows.

Having said all of that, I will be on board for anything that happens between Gregg and Dickey. Once more with gusto! If it includes the entire band (sans Derek and Warren I'd presume?) that would be fine, too. I just hope they have the legs to do a complete tour.
