Love The Life I Live (Willie Dixon cover)

Willie Dixon "Love the life I live".....

Does Chuck Leavell make an appearance on this CD?....The piano here is a good if not perfect fit
Cool

I think he mostly used his own band, and his keyboard player, Peter Levin, is really good:

A few people have linked to the RS article about the album in other threads and I wanted to centralize it here. The most interesting thing to me is that it gives a little bit of a timeline of some of Gregg's health problems and makes it plain that he chose continuing to perform over treatment that might have extended his life. It's not a surprise but it shows one more time that he knew what he wanted in his last years, and good for him for doing things the way he saw fit.

I assume everybody on the site has heard this by now, but I like the Laid Back-style harmonies here. And I'm happy and relieved that Gregg sounds as good as he does.

Here's the AP story about the album. It says that when Gregg was diagnosed with a recurrence of cancer in 2012, he was told he likely had 12 to 18 months left, which makes it remarkable that we got those final ABB shows at all.

Didn't know this, guess it explains alot about the last few years. The 1st song teased from this record is so haunting. I'm gonna love this music and be torn by it's melancholy at the same time.

He knew he was on borrowed time from the time he had that liver transplant. Cancer or not.

He sure made the most of it.

It's one thing to go out in a short bright blaze of glory. Duane was never challenged to recover from so much loss, or to keep making music in a shifting/changing music industry that saw the stars of the 70's struggling through disco etc etc.

To have done much of that through a haze of drugs and then come out the other side takes a strong, strong person.

with mucho respecto,
RIP GA

I love the whole album, as it gets better with every listening. There is only one cut that I tend to ignore as it isn't bad, just is not different enough to make the mix. but, for me to only cut one song from a new album's mix is a great sign.

I tend to remix the order of new albums I like a lot. No doubt, there is a lot of poignant songs on here, slower and not full bore rocking but meaningful, for obvious reasons - death on the horizon. So, my remix puts the awesome rockin' tunes up front.

1. "I Love the Life I Live"
2. "Blind Bats and Swamp Rats"
3. "Love Like Kerosene"
4. "Black Muddy River"
5. "My Only True Friend"
6. "Once I Was"
7. "Going, Going Gone"
8. "Willin'"
9. "Song for Adam"
10. "Out of Left Field"

The first three cuts of the mix above are sweet, rockin' and fun. "I Love the Life I Live" is roadhouse crankin', "Blind Bats and Swamp Rats" is straight Louisiana swamp rockin' and funky and "Love Like Kerosene" is upbeat and stomping with excellent horns. "My Only True Friend," of course, may be the highlight of the album and one of the coolest farewell songs an artist has ever done. "Once I Was" and "Going, Going Gone" both would have fit nicely on the "Laid Back" album as they have 'that feel.' "Black Muddy River" is just bluesy and cool, with hints of a 12-string guitar and mandolin along with the horns. All of the arrangements are well thought out and very cool. A really good album and labor of love.

I did medical and battle of the soul against what we in our fighters group called "The Dragon". It wasn't being cute, or cartooney, it was that we all knew that was the level of foe we had to fight. It was actually a term of respect. It was a Godzilla of an enemy. To win is the lucky. Gregg wasn't lucky in that sense. What he went through is so long and valiant. He was a knight. He fought long. He fought strong. He fought on his terms. He stood tall and looked the dragon square in the eyes. Said Eff Off, and kept playing music. His terms.

And this just deserves to be bumped. No disrespect but on the Allman Brothers website it should be front and center. Just my opinion at the moment. Looking forward to the September release date.

Long live the ABB!

Well said, Tony ... much respect

Bump again. Great song. Thanks to Gregg for sharing his talent to the end. Good stuff.
