Gregg Allman: "No One Sitting In" at The BeaconThe Allman Brothers Band will perform without special guests during their final shows, according to band co-founder and lead singer Gregg Allman.

In an interview with Relix and Jambands.com earlier today, Allman said, “We held a meeting yesterday and we decided that there’s only six gigs left, and we’re going to play them ourselves.

There will be no one sitting in.”The Allman Brothers Band have performed at New York’s Beacon Theatre well over 200 times since their initial stop at the venue in 1989. The group has hosted extended runs at the intimate theater almost every year since 1992—and those runs have consistently featured special guests with varying ties to the famed jamband icons. The Allman Brothers Band will kick off a six-show run at the Upper West Side room tomorrow, October 21.

The 45-year-old band says that their show at the Beacon on October 28 will be their final concert. Allman also confirmed that the band reached out to estranged Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts—who parted ways with the band in 2000—to join them during their final run.

When asked if the group reached out to Betts about a possible appearance at The Beacon, Allman said, “Dickey is in the middle of a hunting trip. Of course we reached out.

”The Allman Brothers Band stopped by the Beacon Theatre this evening to announce the launch of The Syracuse University Bandier Program Alumni Association’s Allman/Lehman Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship is named after Gregg Allman and his personal manger Michael Lehman, this year’s recipients of the Bandier Program Industry Leader Award. The first-ever Young Alumni Achievement Award was presented to Drew Taggart ’12, one-half of the EDM group The Chainsmokers.

Allman also told Relix and Jambands.com that he plans to play the Beacon in the future with his solo group, which features Allman Brothers Band percussionist Marc Quiñones. “I’ve really enjoyed these years at The Beacon, and I fully intend to come back here every year, if I can get in, with my [solo] band to play.”

Allman Brothers Band guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks also annual runs at the Beacon every year with their individual projects. Haynes and Gov’t Mule have hosted New Year’s Eve the Beacon for over a decade, while Trucks recently started a guest-heavy September run at the famed venue with his Tedeschi Trucks Band.

I'm guessing the hunting trip thing is the nice way of saying Dickey declined. I am glad that an invitation was at least extended; hopefully it was a serious one made w/ plenty of advance notice.

I am ok w/ no guests, but I wish former members of the band could have been the exception, schedules permitting.

I'm thrilled there won't be any guests. And I'm skeptical about Gregg's sincerity on whether he was really invited.

So, it's a full schedule of guest appearances then....! 😉

It might have been funnier if he had said Dickey was on a fishing expedition!

"Yesterday" is a little late for this decision to have been made if rehearsals are well under way, isn't it? I would have expected a lot more advance planning, especially as GA might break down before the end of the run. Set lists, deputy keyboardists etc. This time, the shows must go on.

There is a flaw in this thinking.

The Dickey stuff was interesting, but what grabbed my attention was some pretty solid language concerning the end of the ABB.

"The 45-year-old band says that their show at the Beacon on October 28 will be their final concert."

“We held a meeting yesterday and we decided that there’s only six gigs left, and we’re going to play them ourselves."

“I’ve really enjoyed these years at The Beacon, and I fully intend to come back here every year, if I can get in, with my [solo] band to play.”

It is Gregg, so take it with a grain of salt, and of course people change their minds. That said, this is possibly the most definitive statement we've heard yet that the Allman Brothers Band is really over.

I believe it, if only because I think Gregg enjoys playing with his solo band much more anyway, and has for years. I think he may truly be done with the ABB, and there can be no viable version of the Allman Brothers without the only living Allman brother.

I am surprised that Chuck Leavell at least was not asked to sit in given his important contribution in the immediate post Duane era ... however I think that it is fitting that the last shows should be strictly ABB ...

and I must admit that my heart is very heavy today ... the beginning of the end of my favourite band ...

For all those that are lucky enough to have tickets ... have a wonderful time and treasure every minute ...

I will most certainly be with you in spirit ... I just wish I was really there with you sharing the spirit ...

May the music of Duane Allman's Band flow through your soul forever Brothers and Sisters ... Cool

I believe Chuck is in Australia with the Stones as they have dates that start Saturday or we may have seen him as well. One of the things that has put a smile on my face is the multiple times that Chuck has played with the ABB over the past 13 years. I've been meaning to put together a double CD of his best performances with the ABB during this time...need to buy some more instant lives and find a few other recordings. In particularly, March 21, 2005 with Chuck Leavell will go down as one of the greatest shows I think this band every played.

On with the show.

I wonder if this comment is for real.............................I googled that phone number and it is David Spero Management

David Spero
October 20, 2014, 23:57:33

Alright, enough of this. I am David Spero, and while I admire that someone might pretend to be me, there is only one of me. Me. At any rate, there has been no, I repeat, no communication between anyone in the ABB camp and Dickey or anyone here. Feel free to reach out, my number is 216-381-5544. Dickey has been misrepresented and disrespected by Gregg, Butch and various members of the ABB family for many a moon. For the record, Dickey is not on a hunting trip and would be tickled pink to receive an invite or any positive communication from Gregg or the family

If there was no contact made, then don't make the comment. No need to sour what are the final 6 shows of this great band by doing something like that.

Who knows if it is for real, but I have my doubts that any contact was made between the band and Dickey or his people. While it would be nice for the fans, that ship sailed long ago.

Why does Gregg need to be such a pretentious a$$hole during this time??

Actually, I think it's real. It's on David Spero's Facebook page which is public. Now, could Jaimoe have called Dickey personally in the last month and Dickey's manager not know about it? Maybe. As bad as Gregg is at interviews, he still had to know he would be asked about this. Unnecessary twist before opening night.

Man taken from afar this year has been a hysterical clusterfoink. Only the next week will tell. Watch there be a guest or two tonight and prove the statement false right off the bat. Nothing frankly would surprise me.

I can imagine the telephone conversation now

EC - I was thinking about dropping by for the last two shows
GA - F off Eric, we don't need your stinking arse here

http://www.jambase.com/Articles/123084/Manager-Dickey-Betts-Was-Not-Asked-To-Play-At-Beacon

Yesterday, Gregg Allman discussed the final Allman Brothers shows in a new interview and not only did he reveal that the group won't be joined by any guests at NYC's Beacon Theatre, he also talked about the Dickey Betts situation. When Relix asked Gregg about whether his old band mate, who left the group's employ in 2000, would perform during the run, Allman responded "Dickey is in the middle of a hunting trip. Of course we reached out." Dickey Betts manager, David Spero, would beg to differ.

Spero first took to his own Facebook page to respond, "This is a load of crap! Dickey was never asked to be a part of the final shows. A complete lie! Shame on jambands.com for not calling me for confirmation on this. They know where to find me!" Then, the manager went into a little more detail on the Dickey Betts Fans Facebook group, "To all reading Gregg Allman's quote about Dickey being invited to the Beacon...it is a total lie. As Dickey's manager I know all the 'behind the scenes maneuvering' that take place when these things happen, and guess what...none have gone on. They are trying to save face.....he was never invited!" Spero also added, "he isn't on a hunt" regarding Gregg's mention that Betts was in the middle of a hunting trip.

Additionally, a commenter claiming to be Spero responded to the article on Jambands.com with, "Alright, enough of this. For the record, Dickey is not on a hunting trip and would be tickled pink to receive an invite or any positive communication from Gregg or the family."

We were really hoping the principals in this situation would be able to squash their beef for one night to send off the legendary band in the best way possible, but apparently it's not just the road that goes on forever. The Allman Brothers Band begin a six-show residency billed as their "final shows" tonight at the Beacon Theatre in New York City.

My theory is that Spero has sour grapes because he got left out of the loop when someone went straight to Dickey.

And if Dickey has been treated so poorly all these years, then why didn't he show up to accept the grammy LAA? We all saw where he announced his intentions to be there on his website before ultimately retracting….

Thinking this is strictly a money thing for Mr. Spero

Frankly, I don't believe anything that comes out of Gregg's mouth. His track record is long and for all to see and read. And Dickey is still the man.
