Martin D-35 - $1,095,000.
'54 Strat, serial #0001 - $1,815,000
etc etc.
Over $21,000,000 total.

Those are out of my reach. There is a broom he once did a few seconds of air guitar on at a party - that's only about 10 grand. Could swing that on layaway.

I promised my wife that I would not go over 3.9 million so I lost out.

On CBS this morning they said many fans and artists were surprised Gilmore let go of his long time number one, the black Fender Strat.. But Gilmore said guitars were tools to him and didn't become particularly attached to them. Like the paint brush am artist used.
They had the black Strat in the studio and up close one could see road wear. The gentleman who was the custodian of the guitar said Gilmore made several modifications including coming up with a switch that allowed him to use the neck and middle pickups at the same time. That that was part of how Gilmore got the incredible tone he was famous for. I think later Strats had a switch that allowed for different combinations of the 3 pickups installed by Fender.
There were over 100 guitars in the Gilmore collection put up for auction so that is a tidy number for someone who sees guitars as just his tools.

It all depends on the guitars. You have to divide them between ones he bought and those that were given to him.
That is why some are worth more.
Likely paid around $500 for the black and just sold it for almost 4 million - quite an investment and it is - just a guitar.
I would have sold it too.
