I watched Warren play this wonderful guitar last night on the first song of his Gov't Mule set last night Bill and thought I had posted it here last night. But no it's not here. ???? Thank you for putting it up.

As I've mentioned before, the first several times I saw the Allman Brothers Band was in 1970 and Duane was playing a Goldtop Les Paul and Dickey was playing a Fender Stratocaster. By summer I think it was, Dickey had this SG as his number one. But the first time or two I saw this historical guitar, it had a whammy bar.

If you look carefully at the bottom of the body in the middle, you can see the holes in the wood where the whammy was attached.

Of course as has been discussed many times, Dickey liked the big FAT tone Duane was getting so got a Les Paul. Red Dog said it was in Detroit but Dickey didn't like that Les Paul. Dickey went through several until he settled on Goldie which Dickey got at a pawn shop in Manhattan.

During this period Dickey gave the SG to Duane and suggested Duane tune it for slide and use it for slide rather than adjusting his Les Paul.

Some years ago when asked about the SG, Dickey said he didn't know what happened to it after Duane died. A few years later it surfaced through Graham Nash and Gibson approached Dickey about doing replicas at the custom shop. Dickey got two and played the one he liked best for a few years with Great Southern.

Derek Trucks also got one and was using it as his number one but not sure if Derek is now. The replicas also had the same road wear and the holes drilled into the body where the whammy used to be.

Warren looks like he may have dropped some weight --- looking fairly healthy there. Good for him!

@robertdee

Thanks for the Dickey video it is interesting to see that from 50 years ago and then Warren playing it now. Those old guitars are just magic in the right hands.

Strange to see the Mule without Jorgen on bass due to COVID. COVID is running rampant here in Massachusetts currently as I personally know as many as a dozen people who either have it currently or are just getting over it.

Hopefully Jorgen doesn't have any lasting complications to his health and is fully recovered by the time I go see the Mule at the two concerts I have tickets for in August.

@bill_graham You know I didn't notice Jorgen wasn't on bass. My eyes were glued to that old Gibson SG. It sounded fantastic in Warren's hands.

Apparently it resided for many years under Gary Grooms bed. It's now understood Gregg gave it to Grooms when he remembered Duane say if anything happens to me give Grooms the SG.

I don't know where Dickey got it. I got hooked on the ABB the first time I saw them in January 1970 and then and a few months hence at the shows I saw Dickey was playing a Fender Stratocaster. Then by summer of 1970 Dickey was on this SG.

Dickey has said and 1969 photos support it that he was playing an ES-335 when the Allman Brothers got together and Dickey said Duane was playing Strat or maybe a Tele with a Strat neck, can't remember exactly what Dickey said,  but liked the tone of a Goldtop he encountered and got it very early after the Allman Brothers formed.

First time I saw the Mule was in 1994 in a small bar or club and then I got their first album. Mother Earth was my favorite track.

First time I saw Warren or even heard of him was in 1988 at a Dickey Betts Band shows promoting Pattern Disruptive.

First time I saw Matt Apts was about 1984 at a theatre where Betts, Hall and Leavell was playing. Time before that they were Betts, Hall, Leavell and Trucks and at the 1984 show found out Butch Trucks had quit and Matt took his place. And Matt rocked it!!

I got into Gov't Mule due to Warren's involvement in ABB. I was hooked after I bought the "With A Little Help From Our Friends" Deluxe 4CD set of their marathon 1998 NYE concert.

I agree Abt's is a monster drum player. He is very underrated and never gets mentioned when they talk about the best rock drummers. Considering how many diverse cover songs Mule plays that he needs to learn to play he should get more love.

You were lucky to see the Mule in their first year of touring. I can't remember my first Mule show but I have seen them at least a dozen times and have tix for two shows in August.

You may already know about this streaming website but Sugarmegs has thousands of streaming concerts by a huge list of bands.

They have a large selection of 1994 Mule tour shows you can stream and even download for free. They are MP3's but they are all excellent sounding audience or in many cases SB's. I downloaded all the 1994/95 concerts and listen to them often.

Evidently Gov't Mule used to let tapers plug directly into the SB until someone spilled a drink into the board and they had to stop allowing that. Many of the 1990's shows are also excellent audience recordings including the first ever Mule concert. Check it out if you never used the website.

@bill_graham Thanks for the link Bill. I'm a big Mule fan since 1994. I thought Allen's passing in 2000 would be the end of it.

This band a young person I know loves is Dance Gavin Dance. They just lost their bass player Tim Feerick to a fentanyl overdose at age 34 and now the lead singer is in a mess with two female fans claiming he sexually assaulted them.

Well about a year ago I noticed Drummer World know about Matt. Many of their videos is Buddy Rich, John Bonham, Joe Morello, Neal Peart etc but they have a Matt video for all the drummer freaks to check out!!

This is how I want to play the drums Bill. But I can't:(
