Saw a great Mule show last night. It started out with Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience. As the band name suggests, it was all Zep songs. I have seen them before and they are really good. They do a wonderful job recreating the sounds of Zep. His band is top notch. The singer sounds much like Robert Plant and the front line is top notch. I think the guitar player sounded enough like Jimmy Page without overdoing it. He added his own touch and sound. Jason is a good showman and they engaged the audience.

After maybe a 25-30 minute set break Mule came out and did six of their own including two I really like to kick things off and a couple of songs from the new release which is kind of growing on me. Then it was ALL Pink Floyd covers. I figured they would maybe end the night with a couple of Mule songs but they didn't. The highlight for me was probably Comfortably Numb. The light show was phenomenal, well choreographed to the music.

I think it was after Mule got done with their songs that my friend said he thought Jackie Greene was in the back, behind Danny Lewis and it was him. He was sitting playing guitar but if you didn't look closely, you wouldn't have known. Then I think he was playing a keyboard at one point which makes sense because I know he plays piano/keys. Jackie came out front toward the end and stood next to Warren. I hadn't seen him in a long time and I forgot how damn good he is! I think he might got gotten better.

Danny Lewis played guitar on a song, Ron Holloway was on and off stage as needed and there were two amazing backup singers on some of the Floyd songs. Warren of course was Warren, smiling and keeping the crowd pulled in.

All in all, a great night of music. Check them out if you can.

What was the attendance like?

When I heard this announced and the venue sizes they were playing I was kind surprised. Did not think there would be that much of a draw doing a tribute show to each act. No offense to Warren/Mule and Jason. Maybe its a me thing but I have never been to see a tribute show . For some reason, I am not motivated for it.  Maybe I should try and go at some point.

Don't think I could have stomached a Pink Floyd show. Rather would have heard a Bonham /Haynes with Ann Wilson set doing something Zeppish or whatever.

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

Lawn was empty, back sections sparse, but a very vocal crowd that was very into it.  Made it easier to get in and out of the place, which can be a problem.  The new bass player was a monster - we had 15th row seats and I enjoyed watching him play.

Glad everyone had a great time, sorry I missed it ! I had tickets but ended up being out of town, due to first Grandchild bring born.

Set list looks fun, Agree with Lee, the Mule, opening is also a favorite of mine, followed by Banks - put a smile on my pile for sure !  Glad to see the "gang"  still supporting Warren, - Brotherhood

I don't know if I would call it a tribute show per se. That is what Jason Bonham does and they are really good at it. As far as Mule, I too would have preferred a Mule show but their rendition of Pink Floyd's catalogue was simply amazing. But Mule has done stuff like this for years. I think their Halloween shows are often similar. Over the years they have done Stones, Zep, Floyd, Sco-Mule (which I hated), Hendrix and probably others. It amazes me that Warren can sing pretty much anything.

Obviously you don't care for Pink Floyd. That's fine of course so you would not have enjoyed this. I was hoping they would close with a couple Mule songs but they didn't.

Regarding the size of the venue I too thought it was too big. There is another amphitheater here in Chicago that is smaller and would have been a much better option. And no lawn as it is right on Lake Michigan. At the show some of us went to they were selling lawn tickets prior to the show. Then they stopped that and dropped ticket prices significantly. I think they closed the lawn and told people they could sit in the pavilion. I don't know for certain but I have been to concerts before where this happened. The only people I noticed up there were security guards.

@lee Warren said recently they love Pink Floyd and David Gilmore's melodies are etched in almost everyone's head but Warren doesn't try to copy Gilmore or Page if it's Led Zeppelin note for note and incorporates his own style into the mix.

But the show I saw, when Warren played that green Strat, he certainly nailed David Gilmore's tone.

Warren indicated they keep doing the Floyd thing because of so many requests but he's thinking about stopping that after this year.

I thought the new bass player fit in just fine. Nobody can replace Woody but you have to move on. I had to get use to the Allman Brothers Band without Duane and Berry and it's never the same as with Allen Woody because those people are gone. But new people take those chairs and contribute their styles and ideas.

Remember when Allen Woody put together Blue Floyd?

Forgot about Blue Floyd. Good call. I really like that album. Too bad they didn't do another. I don't recall why that was.

And Marc Ford and Berry Oakley Jr. are in the band.

I never saw them live which would have been cool.

@lee Yes Blue Floyd was cool and I think Allen Woody played lead guitar in that band.

Apparently Berry Oakley is a member of Marc Ford's solo band now. It's a three piece. Ford, Oakley and Smith in drums.

Tal Wilkenfeld is the bass player in Allman Betts Band at least for the fall tour. You may recall she was in Jeff Beck's band for a few years.

@robertdee I saw Tal with Jeff Beck at the Boston HoB years ago and, as much as it sucks Berry will not be with ABB, she is a monster bass player.

Looking forward to seeing them with her holding g down the bottom end.

@bill_graham Yes she is excellent. But like you this should be Berry Oakley's gig. Oakley was so good in Allman Betts before they ran away.

Berry even played his father's "tractor" Fender bass guitar. Dickey Betts took the bass guitar off the wall at his home and gave it to Berry.

Apparently something happened and I assume it isn't for us to know. I do remember Berry's home was completely destroyed in a monster Florida hurricane and several musicians raised money to help him recover.

Probably like others here, I kicked in personally for Berry after that event on some sort of kickstarter page. Never heard a peep about it since.

Not looking for gratitude, just more of how are things going and hopefully the money raised was helpful sort of thing.

Bizarre...

@islalala I never heard anything either. And the man apparently no longer plays with Duane Betts or Devon Allman.

I'll go see Marc Ford if he is in my area and I'll try to ask Berry if he got the money through that effort to get his house put back together.

Marc Ford just played Fitzgerald’s in Berwyn, IL last Thursday. I glanced at a couple of the videos and Berry was not on bass. There was a short, bald guy with a long beard playing bass. He can be seen in Marc’s band in older live videos. Berry might be unemployed at the moment.

@meandean I can't find anything on what Berry Oakley is doing now. He has an interview talking about the Allman Brothers Band and it's music on his Facebook page from earlier this month.

And on father's day this year he posted the pictures of the four men who are father to him with Raymond Berry Oakley 3rd pictured first and Dickey Betts posted fourth.

For the Allman Betts Band's big tour beginning in November, Tal Wilkenfeld is listed as the bass player.

You are right about Marc Ford. Berry Oakley was on bass in his band in the spring and early summer but NOT on the tour which just started.

That's weird. I was going to go to the Berwyn show but it didn't work out. I was looking forward to seeing him and of course, Marc Ford. Never heard Berry before.

I saw the Atlanta show and it was great!   Chastain holds 7000 and it was sold all the way to the back and the small lawn.  Some empty seats sprinkled in for sure, but we also had a biblical size storm roll through starting 30 minutes before show time which caused them to evacuate early arrivers and then get a 45 minute delayed start to the show once the gates opened.  I'm sure the weather played into a few of the empties.

I'd say 6000 there but I suspect it was close a sell out on tickets sold.  Not sure the Mule has drawn that in Atlanta before.

The Floyd section of the show was tremendous.   And I'm glad I caught Bonham & co.
