Gordon Lightfoot Edmund Fitzgerald

I imagine most you know of Gordon Lightfoot. Today is the 40th anniversary of probably his most famous song, "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".
Growing up in Michigan, today is always very sentimental for me. In the Youtube footage there are several items I have seen personally, including the bell that was retrieved from the boat. It is on permanent display at The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point. This is where they were trying to get to when the freighter sunk. I am a lifetime member of the museum.
This morning Mariners Church in downtown Detroit held their annual service/tribute.
Anyway, here are a few links some might find interesting.

The museum where the bell is. The pros dove the site several times:

A nice tribute:

Old Gordie, A great Cdn if there ever was one.
Link is a similar but different version of the song by the Rheostatics.
Love to see the gales of November on Superior. From land of course.

A stellar ballad. In the top ten of my misty-eyed without fail songs.
Lyrics don't get much better than this:
Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her
They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters
Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the rooms of her ice-water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams
The islands and bays are for sportsmen
And farther below, Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered
"Rooms of her ice-water mansion"! wow.

What a great song. 2nd favorite must hear Thanksgiving tune after "Alice's Restaurant."

I do the same with Alice; and if you want evidence that the digital age has shortened attention spans I challenge you to try to get a millineal to listen through with you

I love that song.
