This song, these lyrics - Jeez

Well the pressure's down, the boss ain't here
He gone North, for a while
They say that vanity got the best of him
But he sure left here in style
By the way, that's a cute hat
And that smile's so hard to resist
But what's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

You know, I once knew a woman who looked like you
She wanted a whole man, not just a half
She used to call me sweet daddy when I was only a child
You kind of remind me of her when you laugh
In order to deal in this game, got to make the queen disappear
It's done with a flick of the wrist
What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

You know, a woman like you should be at home
That's where you belong
Taking care for somebody nice
Who don't know how to do you wrong
Just how much abuse will you be able to take ?
Well, there's no way to tell by that first kiss
What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

You know you can make a name for yourself
You can hear them tires squeal
You can be known as the most beautiful woman
Who ever crawled across cut glass to make a deal.

You know, news of you has come down the line
Even before ya came in the door
They say in your father's house, there's many mansions
Each one of them got a fireproof floor
Snap out of it baby, people are jealous of you
They smile to your face, but behind your back they hiss
What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

Got to be an important person to be in here, honey
Got to have done some evil deed
Got to have your own harem when you come in the door
Got to play your harp until your lips bleed.
They say that patriotism is the last refuge
To which a scoundrel clings
Steal a little and they throw you in jail
Steal a lot and they make you king
There's only one step down from here, baby
It's called the land of permanent bliss
What's a sweetheart like you doing in a dump like this ?

I love this song and I also love Infidels which is a very underrated album IMO...:) Cool

Love Dylan.

Sometimes nothing else will do. There always seems to be a line here and there that just floors me. My favorite from him is:

"just when you think you've lost it all, you find you can always lose a little more"

I actually like his recent stuff more, only because I seem to be able to relate to it more since it is newer (I was too young for his 60's stuff...I know it's great, but I feel detached from it a bit).

I know it's not a competition, but I think his newer material towers over Neil Young's. Dylan's always doin' it right it seems...always has you guessing...just my opinions of course. It's all good.

There are some really sweet alternate versions of "Sweetheart Like You." He sings the heck out of that song.

I love the outtakes from around that period because "Infidels" has some great tunes but is a little too clean in the final released version. The "Blind Willie McTell" where Dylan coughs or laughs in the first verse, with Mick Taylor on much more potent slide guitar, is one I really like much more than the "Bootleg Series" version.

The promo video of Sweetheart Like You:

Yeah, it is all lip synching, but it is fun. Mick Taylor played guitar on the studio albu, and he is not in the video but the blonde playing guitar is Carla Olson of the Textones, and Mick played on a few of her albums!

Another nugget line from Bob:

My clothes are wet and feel tight upon my skin
Not nearly as tight as the corner I've painted myself in

I've always thought it was Mark Knophler of Dire Straits that played guitar on "Sweetheart Like You" but I could be wrong.

Dylan’s association with Mark Knopfler dates back to 1979, when Knopfler played guitar on the album Slow Train Coming. Since then, Mark has appeared on 1983’s Infidels (which Mark also co-produced), Down In The Groove (1988), and various tracks on the Bootleg Series, Vols. 1-3 (1991).

I'm really hoping the Infidels sessions get the bootleg series treatment some day. What a great collection of songs and players. Would love to hear some of the less produced stuff and any information on why Blind Willie McTell was left off of it. The album would of been an even bigger punch in the gut if he put that on it and maybe left off Union Sundown and one other... Another Dylan Mystery.

The band he did the rounds with after the album was released was really garage rock sounding. His appearance on letterman doing License to Kill and Jokerman are total rave ups and sound nothing like the record. Would love to hear more of that unit also.
The videos of that performance seem to come and go from youtube but they are some of may favorite bob clips.
