Two years after Rush performed what may well have been their final concert, bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson are reportedly considering teaming up under a new name.

As reported by Cygnus-X1, this news comes from radio host Eddie Trunk, who gave a surprisingly expansive and tantalizing answer to a fan question about the legendary trio’s future.

After immediately eliminating any chance of drummer Neil Peart participating — “I’ve heard that he doesn’t even have drums in his house anymore,” he said — Trunk revealed that “Geddy told me he is actually reinvigorated. He told me at the time he made some changes to his diet, which helped his voice, and [that] he had a ton of energy, and he wanted to make music and continue in some way.”

Trunk went on to describe Lifeson, who has admitted that he’s been dealing with tendinitis and arthritis in recent years, as “somewhere in the middle” about the idea of teaming up with Lee. However, he said “there has been talk about a band called LeeLifeson, which would be the two of them going out and doing stuff together.”

While again cautioning that all this is something he’s only “heard rumors about,” Trunk was quick to assure fans that Lee and Lifeson “would never call it Rush. Those guys are too classy. They would never do that. They would call it potentially LeeLifeson, maybe play some Rush tunes and make new music, because they want to continue to create new music as well.”

UPDATE 8/26: Trunk has walked back his original comments, saying on Facebook that he was merely speculating and had nothing he said came from either Rush or its management. You can read it in full below.

My comments about RUSH last week were rumor and speculation as stated. Unfortunately some sites are posting headlines from it as click bait. None of this was fact in anyway or from the band or management. Welcome to "media" world today sadly.. it was simply a conversation and rumors talking with a fan as a fan.

What a tease!!

Lifeson's health was questionable, last I read. Geddy Lee is the one who wants to be active.

I'd be happy if these guys just released an instrumental-heavy studio album.

Great idea, then I wouldn't have to listen to that bass player whining as if someone just cut off his balls.

Alex Lifeson Reportedly Shoots Down LeeLifeson Rumors

Sorry, Rush fans, but the idea of bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson teaming up on a new project without drummer Neil Peart has apparently been shot down.

Recent speculation about a new Rush offshoot band was ignited by radio host Eddie Trunk, who answered a fan’s question about the group’s future by saying that Lee and Lifeson had been discussing teaming up again. He said they planned to use their last names as a moniker, and intended to “maybe play some Rush tunes and make new music – because they want to continue to create new music, as well.”

However, in a Facebook post yesterday, Donna Halper – a former DJ and current radio consultant, historian and professor who is widely credited with helping Rush break through in America – said she discussed the rumor with the guitarist while wishing him a happy 64th birthday.

“I asked him about the online rumors and he told me there’s no LeeLifeson collaboration in the works,” she wrote. “Both Geddy and Alex keep in close touch, of course, but both are very busy with their own projects. And neither has any plans for forming a band or touring or anything like that in the immediate future. As Alex just told me, the rumors are only rumors. And now you know … the rest of the story, direct from Alex himself.”

Chronic drum-related injuries and a desire to spend more time with his children have caused Peart to step away from his career, to the point where Trunk says he apparently “doesn’t even have drums in his house anymore.” It has now been more than two years since the trio last performed together
