I saw Gary once in the 80's and once in the 90's. More if he had not stayed in Europe most of the time.

But to you guys who like the hot shot shredder pedal to the metal electric guitar player such as Eddie Van Halen, Steve Via etc etc....the Gary Moore I saw was a monster with a Les Paul and with a Stratocaster. Gary was a master with the whammy bar when he played a guitar with one. The guitar magazines never seem to put Gary up on that level but I've seen many of the hotshot guitarists over the years and if the Gary Moore I saw were on stage with Eddie Van Halen or Steve Via ( seen them too), they wouldn't be able to blow Gary off the stage if they tried. EVH couldn't even begin to kick Gary Moore off the stage.

I don't care what they pulled out of their bag of tricks to throw at Gary, Gary Moore would blaze that neck and throw it right back at them and then some.

Night before last I watched a video on You Tube that was a comparison of Joe Bonamassa and Gary Moore over several songs some of which the same song is played. Joe is shredding and bending and flashing a good vibrato but most of the comments point to Joe being out classed so badly for that kind of electric guitar playing by Gary. Maybe Joe Satriani would have given Gary a better run for his money. Eric Johnson might be another one.

But apparently the creator of that video chose Bonamassa because many people apparently think Joe borrowed more than just using mostly Les Pauls and Marshall amps and some of the same songs for his stage show from Moore.

There is no question Gary Moore back then could smoke Joe and I think Eddie Van Halen too but Joe probably has made a lot more money than Gary ever did and EVH definitely has made more money.

Not sure why this topic has anything to do with Gary vs EVH or whoever. I am not into ranking guitar players or "vs". I enjoy both and would say neither are better.
All are different and have their own styles you can't compare. "Shredding" has nothing to do with ones ability and talent or very little. Being able to write good music is way beyond that. I love Angus and Django Rheinhardt. Both are extremely different , but very talented in what they do.

Bonamassa would be the first person to tell you that he is not even in the same class as Gary Moore. He would be right. Joe is a poor man's version of Gary's blues years and charges a lot for it.

EVH would not be able to play a 1/4 of the things/styles that Gary could. EVH is very good at what he does but is limited to that. Tapping is the only style that he would top Moore at and even then, Gary did not need to tap as he hammers/pull off accomplished that without his picking hand.

Gary succeeded at blues, rock, jazz, flamenco and the ability to blend them all together.

Like Scott, I don't get to caught up in talent comparisons but these ones are not even close.

Without a doubt and I love VH but strictly from a guitar view, Gary was an extremely unique player who mastered so many styles and techniques. It just came naturally. Finger strength was out of this world, bends most guitarists who not even consider, vibrato, speed, the ability to play one note also, the list goes on and on.

George Harrison called him the greatest. I don't rank but he is right up there.

Uh...wow...that was insane. Thanks for posting that. I new he did a Jimi tribute cd , but never have seen this live version. That pretty much says it all about him. I am not much of a Strat guy,prefer the power of a LP armed with HB's,:P 😉 😛 😉 but he he was destroying with that Fender.

I liked his blues stuff , but preferred his hard rock material.

After the short-lived Band Of Gypsies Jimi started touring again with The Jimi Hendrix Experience with Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox (in stead of Noel Redding). So Billy was in The Experience as well.

I was in those front rows at that 1986, Belgium concert (Oostende Beach Festival, Rod Stewart headlining).
Kick ass show. "The Loner" even blew the naysayers away!

The Gary Moore fans here would likely remember that Moore did a short-lived collaboration with Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker called BBM. It's been so long since I played that CD that I had to look in my rack to be sure I still had it and I do: It's called "Around The Next Dream". Going to have to give it a spin, I remember it was pretty good with Bruce as expected handling nearly all the vocals. To my knowledge that's the only record they ever made. I don't think they ever took this band on the road but I could be wrong about that. The CD cover is great: It's just Baker toking on a cigarette with huge Angel wings behind him.

I was curious so I just looked: Amazon has Around The Next Dream on CD but it's $19.76. Out of print obviously, as expected. FYI that record was released in 1994.

Just saw a list of the top 45 all time best electric guitar players on a website. Gary didnt make it. I think when Rolling Stone had their top 100 with Jimi Hendrix at number one and Duane Allman number two, Gary didnt make that list either.

Gary Moore seems to be overlooked or ignored but if you look at the comments on many of Gary's YouTube videos, many comments have Gary Moore as the best and most incredible electric guitar player there ever was.

Yes, damn shame. Gary Moore and also Rory Gallagher are ioften gnored in many lists and polls.
But what the heck, those are mostly silly lists anyway. The same with that travesty called Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
