Lockn festival has been pretty good so far. Unphrey's McGee sounded good Thursday night. I don't really understand Ween at all. They're like cross between flaming lips and meatloaf. Lead singer loves that megaphone. I enjoyed white denim, never heard of those guys before. Lead singer is good. Songs are well put together. Been wanting to see Charles Bradley for a while. He was ok, nothing mind blowing. Peter Wolf was ok. Also never heard of him before. Looks like he's been at this rock n roll business for a lifetime or two. First Phish show I've seen from start to finish. Trey brought plenty of energy to the place. The songs sounded good. They did an a cappella version of David Bowie's space Odyssey. Was more humorous than anything. Second half of their set was almost all instrumental. The best so far has been Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Never seen them before. Seems like a stage full of enormously talented musicians. The two on guitar are amazing, playing off each other. They jammed out every song. The guy on keyboard is equally amazing. And the drummer always kept it nice and mellow regardless of where everyone else took it. Those were some of the best renditions of grateful dead songs I've ever heard and the highlight of the festival so far. Can't wait see them again tonight.

You've never heard of The J Geils Band? 😮 He's the singer. 😉

I think having the festival stream is GREAT!

I'm too old for 90 plus degrees. I sold my ticket and am happy for it!

I'll just stay home, keep Lockn' on the TV and make love to my wife!

Ahhh..... No wonder it looks like he's been in the rock n roll business forever. Never really followed J Geils Band, except what the radio played.

Enjoyed Phil & Friends yesterday but missed TTB - the five-hour time difference was too much.

Should be able to catch Chris Robinson, Phil & Friends and Gary Clark tonight.

Nice Beware of Darkness by the Doobie Decibel System right now!

Effie!!!! Are you actually complimenting the TTB or is there a tinge of sarcasm in there? LOL!!! I hope all is well with you and yours. Listening to Phil with Chris Robinson Brotherhood as his Friends today and although it is pretty solid it isn't nearly as good as yesterday's set with that group of musicians IMO.

Wow all this awesome music streaming all weekend for free. I really enjoyed Moon Taxi, Twiddle, Galactic, Phil and Friends and Tedeschi Trucks on Saturday.

Saw Phil again Sunday, really good band he has there breathing life into those great songs. Gary Clark on now and looking forward to a long set by Phish @ 8:30. How cool is it that they made this available for us. I think this and the Peach Fest are the best Festivals of the Summer.

I'm a fan of Chris Robinson, but he butchered a lot of the Phil set. New Speedway>St. Stephen was nice, but there were some cringe-worthy moments (Fire on the Mountain). Yes...yesterday's set was FAR superior. Chris doesn't have a lot of range vocally...

Of the acts I've seen:

Yesterday was what P&F are about-creative interpretation and reinterpretation of the original delivered by extremely talented players.

Today...well it may have been the opposite of creativity and talent in,oh,so many ways 😉 Phil sounded nice and got down on those blues numbers.

Gary Clark has a limited range,ability,and repertoire....boring to my ears.With Phil,huh?

Phish...I'm old...the lyrics drove me away...and the silly tunes...I'll try again since they are very able players in their context.

Susan and Derek were outstanding.Great set.

Ween...I'm confused.

No I meant it,Pete.

I still got my thing with aspects of their sound, but they were hot last night.Susan sounds great again,as she did solo...not one time was she screaming or shouting above a too loud band.

Derek's guitar was tremendous and fit better into the overall band sound.

Lots of great covers.

Mike sings more.

Longer jams.

Yeah,we are considering a Beacon show.HopeAlan hasn't read this! 😛 😉

I really enjoyed My Morning Jacket last night. My first real introduction to their music.

Thought Chris Robinson's set was great today. Enjoyed Phil's set better yesterday too. Phish just starting now. Enjoy all! Smile

Was my first time seeing phish and I enjoyed both shows. The lyrics are a little goofy but the songs had a nice feel to them. I could do without the a cappella segments but they did Led Zeppen's No Quarter, which was awesome. They also did a very nice version of the Stones Loving Cup. I also really enjoyed Gary Clark Jr. He had a nice set. The shocker was My Morning Jacket. Never seen a whole concert before. It was different but nice. They were trippy, melancholy and fun at the same time. They did a nice version of What the World needs now. I was bummed they didn't broadcast the late show with Lettuce like they said they would. Still the best all weekend for me was Joe Russo's Almost Dead. It's nice to enjoy these shows from the comfort of my living room. If anyone has Qello let me know how it is. I'm considering it. They have a free trial going on now.

Would just like to comment on the Phish lyrics. Based on the reviews, most everyone either likes them or respects their talent. Based on this information, I would say that the same could be said for Frank Zappa, he was a musical genius with goofy lyrics.

No one seemed to care that his lyrics were off the wall. Why Phish is called out for this is beyond me. Please feel free to enlighten my sentiment.

Both Phish shows this weekend were awesome. Trey and the band are better than I previously thought. That being said if I have to grade or judge a song I look at the overall composition. Within that composition I'll look at musicians and how they play their instrument. If somebody is bad ass on keys or guitar you'll hear it in the song. Next, for me, I listen to the vocals. It's tough to listen to a whole album or concert if you don't care for singer's voice. Typically, after I like the song, I try to become more aquatinted with the lyrics. Often, my respect for a song I like grows after I learn the lyrics. Greg Allman is a good example. How one chooses and phrases lyrics together can mean all the difference in a song and whether that song stands the test of time. I like songs such as Fluffhead or Wolfman's brother but lyrically, I'm not expecting too much. Music is art and everyone has different opinions when it comes to art or entertainment. Phish did a good job. So much so that it looks like trey was significantly stifled when he did those fare thee well shows.

I agree with that comment. I feel the same way about Widespread Panic. I love their music but I can only take so much of John Bell's vocals.

thresher, I would have to agree on your points here as I feel the same way. Well thought out post I might add. For me there are some groups where lyrics don't matter. Phish would be one of them. I'm there purely for the music, and the music in this case is awesome.

"No one seemed to care that his lyrics were off the wall. Why Phish is called out for this is beyond me. Please feel free to enlighten my sentiment."

Actually, there are plenty of people who do not like Zappa's music because of his lyrics. Frank was aware of that; clearly his album titles "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar" and "Does Humor Belong In Music?" show that he had been confronted with critics of his lyrics.

I think Zappa is a lot funnier than Phish, though I do find plenty of his lyrics silly. However, sometimes his lyrics are spot on; the reason "Joe's Garage" is a radio staple is that it tells an excellent story.

I listen to both bands for their remarkable music in spite of the sometimes-dopey lyrics.
