Supposed to go to London later next week for Anniversary trip with the Mrs including seeing Eddie Vedder in London. I know if you cancel plans the bad guys win, but curious what folks think? I am debating if we should go or not and am curious what others think.

Thanks!

I wouldn't cancel and Happy Anniversary by the way.

I'm thinking security will be extra tight for some time over there and a lot of other places also.

I say go, try to enjoy the trip, as always, be aware of your surroundings.

Last updated March 27, but still some good info: https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/united-kingdom.html

Happy Anniversary, go and enjoy it. you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning or winning the lottery, so remember to buy a lottery ticket before you go. my 79 yr old mom just got back from a trip to france and had a blast, just go man.

Man after thinking about it for a few, I can see where it is easy for me to sit here and say go.

If either you or your wife is hesitant or maybe other family members worried about you, I can see where it would be quite the decision.

Good luck deciding.

My first trip was two weeks after the London subway bombing in 2005. The perps were caught while we were there.

Every person we encountered thanked us for not canceling our trip. My go to response was if we cancel the bastards win.

We were mostly in a small town in the north called Haltwhistle but we spent time in Edinburgh, Newcastle, and London.

Even rode the subway in Newcastle out to the North Sea to watch the tall ships leave for Norway.

Make that trip, you will be glad you did.

I am hoping on a someday Ireland trip to see part of heritage, who knows. But unless the world political and violent climate changes, I am not sitting around planning trips abroad either. So would I go in your scenario? Probably yes.

That is it exactly - I am leaning go, but the Mrs is leaning no. We don't leave until next week so that should allow for the situation and emotions to settle.

Man after thinking about it for a few, I can see where it is easy for me to sit here and say go.

They are trying to destroy the world; no place is safer than another (with the exception that I wouldn't travel to countries that are for the bad guys)

My first trip was two weeks after the London subway bombing in 2005. The perps were caught while we were there.

The perpetrators blew themselves up!

People can give you advice but it is your and wife's decision whether to travel. I live just outside London and won't be changing any of my plans.

Ordinarily, I would say that terrorist attacks here are very sporadic but we are having a general election on 8 June and the attack on Manchester may be the start of a campaign to coincide with that.

Threat level has been raised to the highest - Critical - which means that further attack(s) is/are thought to be imminent.

It's all very well to say that changing our normal behaviour means that the bad guys win, but that is no consolation if you are the victim of an attack.

All I can say is that you would have to be extraordinarily unlucky to be caught up in anything.

Correct, Shavian. I was thinking of the CCTV picture that was in the papers - shown in the link below - I should have said they were identified. I remember news reports while there of raids and arrests at the residences. Memory burp.

Thanks for the correction.

There was also the notorious case of the innocent Brazilian man who was shot dead by the police on a tube train.

We went to the Tate Museum in London, Fridea Kallo exhibit, waking toward the Millenium Bridge behind a couple of locals. We passed some machine gun toting, black clad folks and the local guy said, "That's a bit much, innit?".

A bit like the post 9/11 vibe in DC.

Maybe deal with the root causes instead of the symptoms.

But they never do.

Thank you Heineken515 - we did not go. We cancelled trip, got airline credit and gave up tix to see Eddie Vedder for tomorrow night as we just weren't comfotable going. We sat at a restaurant two nights ago feeling terrible for those caught up in the ugliness, but happy to be in a small town in New York celebrating our anniversary and feeling safe.

I think it was a good move to cancel that trip. I saw some photos etc. on CNN regarding the bridge attack. After the bridge was cleared they were on there in Hazmat (those white) suits with facemasks. They may know things they have not released to the public. For now, I'd say delay any trips there. Trump was also planning to go there, not sure if he still is.

The attack is right before Trump planned to visit London.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/05/europe/khuram-butt-london-attacker/index.html

Eight cops fired 50 rounds against 3 attackers. They think that is a lot of bullets. They are well mannered in the UK, if that was NY it would have been a lot more.

The attackers asked where they could rent a van just before the attack.

But this is the Anything Goes thread, so I will not do a full update here. I have not even fully investigated this.

Regarding Gregg, instead of London, we ended up heading to Beacon, NY for a long weekend (a fittingly named location) about an hour and a half up from NYC and stayed in a brand new hotel there called - The Beacon. On the day of Gregg's memorial we hit up a nice, new local brewery, Hudson Valley Brewery, and while sampling their brews out in the sunshine, the music switched over to all Gregg tunes and it was very cool.

I grabbed 2 tix for the Concert For New York show at MSG a month after 9/11. My wife and I attended and we talked about what if as we had a babysitter watching our 7 and 8 yr old kids. We talked of what a prized target it would be, but we went and I remember seeing all the police and firemen in uniform, The families, the kids. What a goose bump kind of night with all those of the Bravest and Finest. It was special in a lot of ways without a single note being played yet. You should've went Handsome. What's meant to be is meant to be.

The white suits are worn by forensic experts collecting crime scene evidence. Nothing to do with "Hazmat".

Trump is due to make a state visit in October - not at all imminent.

If he cancelled, it would be the most popular thing he could possibly do....
