Farewell, Bill Walton

Farewell to a great basketball player, free spirit and Allman Brothers fan. So much fun to watch during his hoops days. I spotted him once at a Beacon show (pretty hard to miss!). I know one guy who had the ... good fortune to end up with a 2nd row Beacon show ticket - right behind the guy on row 1 who happened to be Bill Walton.

One of the greatest college players, hampered by injuries a lot as a pro. In later years he was hilarious to listen to doing color commentary on PAC 12 basketball games. Big ABB & Grateful Dead fan indeed!
"Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?"

Walton was a great basketball player, that cannot be denied, and was elected to both the Top 50 and Top 75 NBA teams. I also respected him for having the incredible nerve to reference the fact that "UCLA players were taken care of and after all these years nobody has ever come around asking questions". Despite the glorification of John Wooden, that exposed a dark side of the man that nobody seems to ever want to talk about. All that being said, I will NOT miss having to listen to Bill Walton announce college basketball games. I didn't think he was funny, I thought he was a motor mouth know-it-all in love with the sound of his own voice. It was always difficult for the other commentator to get a word in. And referencing the Grateful Dead in some way nearly EVERY single game he called was just flat out stupid. If some announcer caught 1,000 Celine Dion shows and talked about her every night..........well, think about it.

Very sad he passed away. A great ambassador to the game and the grateful dead
