If you can swing it, you should go. But keep your expectations in line with his current playing, which is not up to even his level of a few years ago. I am sure the cross-pollination will help to push him up a notch (think MOE, for those of you who have been on this site more than a couple of years), and the inevitable sit-ins will be great, regardless.

Am I the only one who just doesn't get the whole Gary Clarke Jr. thing? A decent player for sure but I hear nothing original in his playing, sound, style, songwriting, etc.

I've seen him twice and neither time he did much for me....Am I missing something?

I was getting kinda worried about Clapton. I have not heard or seen much from him lately since that video was taken of him earlier this year in the airport riding in a wheel chair. Good to hear he has a show coming up. Grin Grin Grin Grin

I agree with you. Saw him as an opener for Clapton this past March and saw him at the Crossroads festival several years ago and literally couldn't listen to him

Did anyone manage to get tix? As usual I drew a blank despite being in the website 'waiting room' all primed and ready. Now I know why I prefer to catch Tony Joe White or Larkin Poe in a small club. Sooo frustrating

Couldn't agree with you more pops. I feel blessed to have seen many legends. Many due to the fact that I moved to Chicago and I saw them in small blues clubs or at festivals. Koko, Bobby Blue Bland, Honeyboy Edwards, James Cotton, Lonnie Brooks, Junior Wells, J Geils. Of course BB.

Sure there are others. But to the point, get out and these these folks if you can.

Saw EC a few months ago at MSG. One just needs to ramp down their expectations. But as I always say he is a horse who needs to be pushed to run his best. his lineup might get him out of his comfort zon. It was years ago that they toured but Winwood pushed him

I guess I'm in the minority in this thread, but Gary Clark is one of my favorite current musicians.

"I've seen him twice and neither time he did much for me....Am I missing something?"

In the sense that you don't enjoy him as much as I do, you are definitely missing something.

"I hear nothing original in his playing, sound, style, songwriting, etc."

A fair critique in some ways, but I really enjoy his blend of influences. He may not be the most innovative artist, but I find him a very soulful singer and player and he really resonates with me. His most recent studio album really took my fandom up a notch. A song like "Church" is not necessarily groundbreaking or original, but it's probably my favorite song anybody has released in the past 5 years. SO much soul in that tune.
