Yes...

From an interview of Derek on musicradar.com
"This week, the original Duane SG is up for auction. It’s pretty wild. I asked around. I have one really nice Gold Top that’s one serial number away from Duane’s Gold Top, and it’s a ’57. I looked into it. ‘What if I sell that, my car, and another few things? How close will that get me?’ It’s fine. I got kids, man. I’ve got college to think about! [Laughs] I just hope whoever gets it, plays it.”

I hope whoever gets it keeps its arrangement with the Big House and continues the tradition of letting others play it.

I think it'll be a hard sell at that price because it doesn't have a lot of the original parts. It doesn't even have the cherry bursts pickups in it anymore and it's been refinished a few different times. I read the head stock at one point was chewed up by a dog and the "wings" on the head stock had to be replaced as a part of the refinish. We'll see but yes that would be nice if they kept that arrangement

I have just enough cash to put a bid on the dog that did the chewing.
Otherwise there's more of Duane's Mojo right here on this board.

LOL my first thought too, before I saw your post. Probably get the dog for free, most likely have to dig it up first. I was thinking the teeth would make a good necklace.

I hope it stays at the ABB museum most of the time too.
But the last few shows I got to see in 1971, it wasn't Duane's number one. Duane had moved to a, I guess you would call it, tobacco burst Les Paul. I think it had the word "Duane" on the back embedded into the wood and it was old frets used to spell Duane. I think I've read his daughter has that guitar.
The SG was Dickey's. In 1970 Dickey was using that SG and a Strat but late in the year decided he liked the tone Duane was getting and Dickey got a Les Paul. Dickey went through several Les Paul guitars including a Goldtop where red paint had been added to the outer edge of the body. Dickey used that guitar on Fillmore East and later gave it to Dan Toler who played it for years then sold it. And Dickey used a light sunburst with zebra pickups and that was his number one on the Brothers and Sisters tour. In 1974 Dickey found Goldie at a pawn shop I think in New York City and he finally settled in on that guitar which was his number one until 1994 when he suddenly switched to a Paul Reed Smith.
Anyway after Dickey quit using the SG, he decided to give it to Duane suggesting Duane keep it tuned for slide so he wouldn't have to re-tune his Les Paul during the show. Apparently Duane used the SG on Fillmore East on slide only.
When Duane died Gregg gave the SG to a young man ( his name was mentioned here recently and I forgot the name) who hung around the band and was crazy about Duane. He was a guitar player himself and didnt he pass away? Anyway the guitar found it's way to Graham Nash who is now selling it.
A few years ago Dickey was loaned the guitar and Gibson made the custom shop Brother to Brother SG replica and Duane's daughter gave one to Derek Trucks which, last I read, is still Derek's number one on the road.

Nice writeup on Duane's equipment

Gary Groom is the young man who hung around the band and Duane liked him. When Duane died, Gregg gave the SG to Groom and way later Graham Nash's wife bought it for a birthday present for Graham. Yes it's a 1961 so it was sold as the new Les Paul I assume. But when Les found out he didn't like it and told Gibson to get his name off of it. Said that guitar is not my design so get my name off of it. Gibson then used SG ( Spanish guitar?) . I've seen one picture of Dickey playing it with the whammy bar still on it. I can't remember it it said Les Paul on the neck but by the time Duane got it, if it did say Les Paul, it had been removed.
And the whammy was gone but you could see the holes where it was once attached to the body.

BTW, there is an audio of the Allmans playing the Winterland in January, 1971 on YouTube now. I listened to it last night and enjoyed it. Sound is pretty good and the band is hot. They sound like they do on the Fillmore album. Duane and Dickey both are killing it with their solos and Oakley and the rest are real strong throughout.
They sound so good that one would have to think they were on the verge of becoming a major music act.
I wish I knew how to link it with this phone. Just the first few songs and Liz Reed shows them really smoking out of the gate.
YouTube. Allman Brothers live at the Winterland January 1971.

price seems a bit steep but who knows, Duane's SG sale ends on Sat. 7/20, it's currently at 350,000

SG= Solid(body) Gibson

Gerry Groom. Duane may have used the SG in June of 1971. He did not use it at The Fillmore East in March 1971.

I thought he only played slide on the SG, kept it tuned to open E.
He did soon after the march shows...I have a version of LAFE where you can hear him re-tuning after done somebody wrong so he was using the cherry burst for both at that time

Solid Guitar
You are correct! Good catch.

You can hear him re-tune on the 6/27/71 Fillmore East show too - I guess he used it when he felt like it - I've seen a statement by somebody alleged to have been a friend of Twiggs or Reddog that Duane used the SG (I assume in regular tuning) on the EAP studio Blue Sky. Never seen it verified though. It was on the Les Paul Forum sight - a few years back.

I was at the 3/11/71 Fillmore East show and Duane DEFINATELY used the SG for the first few songs, 3/11 was the added Thursday show, there was also a sax player(Hot 'Lanta) with them as well. Elvin Bishop promised a big jam ( Elvin, Duane, Dickey, Johnny Winter) when he kicked off the evening but sadly that never happened.

I was at the 3/11/71 early show too - wish my memory was sharper.... I wasn't guitar smart at that point in time. I seen pictures from the 3/11/71 show but they only show Duane with the LP. I do clearly remember the huge baritone sax and multiple horns.

I just hope that Indy Colts owner Irsay doesn't end up with it.

Lets all chip in and buy it. Then we can pass it around. Lol. I can't play but I would love to just hold it for a while.

According to what I've read and pictures from 1969 Dickey was playing a Gibson ES-335 or 345. Then in late 1969 he got the SG and a Fender Stratocaster. At first he played the Strat much more than the SG. Dickey is on the Strat on the Warehouse CD from 1990. Dimples from that recording was released in 1974 on Duane Anthology 2. Dickey is also on the Strat on that Fillmore 1970 release that came out from the Grateful Dead. But by summer of 1970 including the Atlanta Pop Festival Dickey was using the SG as his number one minus the whammy bar that was on it in late 69 and early 1970.
I'm not exactly sure when Dickey got his first Les Paul. The roadies use to tell the hard core fans Duane and Dickey were both convinced a Les Paul was the best guitar for their sound but were still searching for a real good one. Said Dickey didnt like the first one he got and moved on to others quickly and we heard he threw one across the stage but it didnt break the neck off so Red Dog put it back in Dickey's rack and when he saw it the next day he beat it into the stage so hard it did break off the neck so Red Dog put it in the dumpster outside. Dickey finally got a Goldtop that is on One Way Out and Trouble No More on Eat a Peach that really sounds good. Jimmy Herring has said Dickey's tone on One Way Out is the absolute best and it's one of his favorite all time solos. But by 1972 Dickey had a sunburst with zebra pickups which had more of a George Benson...lighter tone. He got Goldie which he really liked and was his number one for 20 years in 1974. I remember asking the sound man why he dropped the pretty sunburst with the zebra pickups and he said the guitar became hard to keep in tune so he gave up on it.
Apparently Dickey gave Duane the SG in late 1970 but I've read more than once he actually didnt use it as much as most people think. I've heard that is it on Statesboro Blues on LAFE and I've heard it's a Les Paul.
I do clearly remember the last time I saw Duane play with the Brothers he was using a tobacco burst Les Paul and I dont remember the SG but he could have played it on slide. Its was in North Carolina and 48 years ago. Hard to remember but I do remember all 6 of them left a trail of smoke on the stage. To me that 1971 band was as perfect as a rock band could be. Jazz, blues, rock and they could swing like the big bands of the 1940's with people like Tommy Dorsey, Jack Teagarden, Bunny Berigan , Bunny Goodman and Buddy Rich.
I caught Buddy Rich in the early 80's with that band of young musicians he had and Buddy was untouchable. No rock drummer I ever saw could equal Buddy but Buddy didn't like rock. Just pop and jazz. I thought Jaimoe was kinda like Buddy. Small kit and sticks held in traditional grip.

true, the original Allman Brothers Band had no equals. Neither did Buddy Rich. I saw him live, with Jack Wilkinson on guitar. An amazing drummer and an incredible band.

There was one bid and the auction closed. I don't know if it sold

You can hear Gerry Groom and Duane getting high on the Gatlinburg tape.

Enjoyed watching that. I saw Duane playing that guitar in summer of 1970 at Love Valley, N. C. And Dickey was playing the SG that eventually became Graham Nash's guitar. Didn't know at the time I was seeing two historic guitars that are for sale this year.

Is it still mum who purchased the SG and the Gold Top ?
