That's cool

it was not cool for me....zak was not Dickey Betts....not that he ever should be....my memory tells me that they hurried through songs and got the hell out of there...I believe they were honoring refund requests...

It certainly must have been, ah, and interesting show given, for the life of me, I can't imagine Zakk coming even remotely close to pulling off such a gig. Not because he isn't a great player, but because he's a very good metal player and everything about his style, tone, attitude, etc. is a complete 180 degrees from the Allman Brothers....But hey, he tried it and for that I tip my hat to the man.

Picture Zakk with a vest, no shirt, one foot up on the monitor, playing the white les paul with the bullseye design holding it vertically and spitting beer straight up into the air like a humpback whale breaking the surface to take another breath....next time I saw them Dickey was singing 'I gotta change my way of livin" and "everybody has a mountain to climb" from Where it all begins.... so good came out of bad....

I haven't heard the show in a while but I remember Zack actually doing a pretty good job given the short notice and difference in tone and styles. Honestly, he slays his solo on the Whipping Post especially since he was asked to fill in only a few hours before the show:

WOW I don't think I have heard that since seeing it happen....He did do a great job on his solo....I give him total credit...that's not and easy spot to step into especially the way he had to do it...in all honesty I did not have an open mind that night...whipping post was very early in the set and I was thrown off by everything that came down and the timing of it all....sounds a lot better to me now than it did then....I couldn't believe it happened at the time...was in total W.T.F. mode that night...

Yes, I remember thinking the same thing when I heard he had filled in. Had I been at the show and seen his stage antics - especially with Dickey missing - I would have been pretty jaded. Wasn't until a few years ago when I got the show out of curiosity that I realized he actually made for an interesting and worthwhile show. Not saying I'd want that style and tone multiple nights or even want to attend a Zack over Dickey show but it is cool that it's out there and I think he gets a bad rap. There is a lot of cool stuff there.

Yup, I was there. Heard the news in the lot. I think I've posted before that Zakk had an Allman's cover band on the side at the time.

it was actually a blues and southern rock cover band called "lynyrd skynhead" and they slowly morphed into zakks band "pride and glory" who released 1 album and then sorta morphed into zakks book of shadows project and then into black label society. it kinda all ran together to get to the point he was at in the early 00's.
lynyrd skynhead did record 2 songs before changing the name to pride and glory
(Lynyrd Skynhead recordings credited as 'Zakk Wylde')
"Farm Fiddlin'" - Guitars That Rule The World (1991)
"Baby Please Don't Go" - L.A. Blues Authority Vol. 1 (1992)

I was there. We heard about Dickey not playing on the way down to Great Woods. I had never heard of Zac before. It was a weird concert. If I remember correctly, they were offering refunds before the show, and only 3 people took them. I could be wrong on that. I remember seeing Alan Woody shaking his head a couple of times. I can't say that he was terrible, just a weird vibe to the show.

Did he play with them at the Horde tour in New Jersey at Waterloo village in 1989? My friend says he was there and Dickey didn't play. Thanks.

I blew Great Woods off that night.
I went to the Stowe Vt. show which was the
first show after the Saratoga craziness.
At that show Jimmy Herring and John Popper filled in for Dickey
so I really didn't feel like goin to Great Woods.
Had no idea Zakk was gonna fill in. 😮

zakk had the best deltoids and biceps on stage that night

I remember reading about this, an incident in Saratoga was what lead to Dickey needing a sub during the 1993 tour.

I was fortunate enough to have missed out on this.

I was with three other people that night. We left early. Real early.
that was the only time I ever walked out on a brothers concert and I saw them dozens of times...

I attended the Saratoga Springs show the Friday night before the Zakk fill in. My crew and me went to the race track the following day and one of us bought the local paper while getting coffee the next morning before heading to the track. The idea being to read the review of the Friday night show.
Instead, the news of Dickey's arrest sort of overshadowed what I recall was a pretty good performance from the brothers the night before as well as a good review in the paper. Little did we know at the time that this entire episode would add a bit more to the legend that is the ABB.

Don't blame it on Zakk. He is who he is, its pretty known what type of player he is. Blame it on whoever thought it was a good idea to bring him in. I don't have a problem with it. May not have been the perfect ,but life goes on....
