I though the same thing revonah about the band initially, but I have to say that it was the best band Dickey has had since the Brothers. Some of it due to choice of Damon on guitar and some of it Duane's improvement compared to a decade ago. Mike Kach also never sounded better and nailed Whipping Post and My Getaway.

I'm glad those who went got mostly what they wanted out of the show - a great time at the Beacon with old friends. Just getting Jaimoe and Dickey back onstage in Macon makes the whole tour completely worth it.

renovah, I just don't think it would have been possible for Dickey to reinvent his band. Just getting back on the road after 4 years off at his age is somewhat herculean. Best to enjoy what it is.

I'm looking forward to seeing the revue in October.

Firstly I was not there last night, my life has me running about 120 miles per hour right now which is what is required to deal with some of my challenges.

I think it is terrible that people go to a show and say they don't have expectations of a great guitarist. People should have expectations and he should meet or exceed them. A musician plays for the people, when he plays in his non show time, he plays for himself.

I do think that playing the Beacon had to be a scary thing for him after all that has happened, the FAX, the break up of the band, Butch and Gregg's passings. Those are heavy things to deal with.
So we can cut him some slack in that regard.

HOWEVER, a musician is expected to show up ready to play and do his best. Prior to showtime, soundcheck should have been done to make sure there were no issues with the sound. There should not have been an overbearing bass line unless someone deliberately turned it up to drown out another performer who was not up to par.

Dickey is not a singer, but he can do things for his voice, hydrate his vocal cords, get the sleep he needs, eat right, take some time to spiritually center himself. A lot of time on the road, people just don't get to do those things but they are important.

Equally important is rehearsals and band practice so that everybody is where they should be musically. Many have commented that Duane was cueing him, Dickey needs to correct the reasons why this was necessary. I remember back near the FAX time when Gregg reportedly told him to listen to the effin' tapes from one of the Atlanta shows and people remarked about his timing being off, and the reason was he did not attend practice with every body else.

The band needs to rehearse and everybody needs to be in sync. If they are not, that needs to happen. The band does not do a lot of shows year round, but they still need to get together and practice at least for a month or so before the shows.

I do not believe that he cannot be a formidable musician, who people love coming out to see because they want to hear what he has to say musically. We know he's hurting from all that has happened, but I know and believe he still has a lot left to give, and I also know as he has sung (off Pattern Disruptive) "the blues ain't nothin' but a good man feelin' bad".

So my closing thoughts are the people should keep the good vibes out there for him, and he should work any musical issues that need to be worked on.

For any of those other things people hint at, take Gregg's advice "leave your mind alone and just get high". Become peaceful with yourself and you will feel better. Do what you need to do to find that peace, but alcohol is not the way. If you need something, smoke hash instead.

I'll leave it at the videos and prior reviews. I was happy to give Dickey some love, that was the intent anyway. So many ghosts of the past.

I think Marshall Tucker doesn't get the due they should for performance caliber. Doug has a pretty limited voice range, BUT..... His other singers are pretty good. The band was very tight. He knows how to be a showman. It was kinda like your old favorite grandpa making you feel good. To be honest, if being impartial and grading on musical quality, they were actually the best of the night, which surprised me. I thing they should get more of just due on this. IMO, the crowd energy was very alive in their set. Again, pretty tight, and pretty fun. A- grade. Pro's.

Tony it reminds me of some people on this site complaining about both The Outlaws and Skynyrd. "Oh there are hardly any original members in the band!". I have said this for years but neither did The ABB for decades. Not many people here seemed to mind.

Several years ago Brofan and I (remember him?) went to The Chicago House of Blues to see The Outlaws. I felt kind of bad for them as there could have only been a few hundred people there. But boy were they great! Played all their hits. It was right before Hughie passed and he was amazing.

I've seen Skynyrd a ton of times. All after the crash of course and they always put on a good show. Over the years there were guys I certainly missed but I think they filled in the holes quite well.

Sorry to digress but it reminds me that sometimes our heroes aren't always what they once were, Dickey included I suppose. Heck just get out there and enjoy the live music.

Did Devon and Duane really only play three songs as a set/opener?

This is how the music should sound, and can sound by those paying homage to the man who created the music and the sound.

Dickey, don't let them young whippersnappers do it better than you can! We all still love you, time to up your game.

From the Beacon, let the music speak for itself.

Remarks: The Beacon was not one of Dickey's better nights, but as other shows prove, he's still got a lot to give musically.
