Dickey and Jack, Dreams, 1998 -- incredible

Just watch and listen...

it is incredible...
Dickey & Derek
Dickey & Jack
Dickey & Warren
Dickey & Dan
Dickey & Duane seems to be a common denominator to all that great music...

Dickey Betts, the master of melody and tone !!!

Thanks!
Jack is amazing.
Dickey gets some nice tones from the Strat

That is Dickey's old 1956 Strat hardtail. Hardtails are not that common. There is no whammy bar or any place to screw it on the guitar.
As I understand it, Dickey became irritated at Gibson in 1994 for ignoring him. Apparently a few Les Paul signature guitars had been coming from the custom shop and Dickey had been using several Les Pauls since 1970 and the same one since 1974 without a Dickey custom planned. So he got irritated at Gibson in 1994 and switched to nnPRS. But in 1995 he bought a 1961 ES-335 dot neck and it was his number one in 1996. The irritation resurfaced in 1996 so at the Beacon in 1997 he brought his old Strat that apparently Dickey bought some years earlier for rhythm guitar in the studio. I remember Dickey saying in a interview back in the 70's that a Strat is a hell of a rhythm guitar.
Dickey had a hot rail pickup put in the neck pickup and one put in a Strat Mary Kay he picked up somewhere. It has a slightly different tone and Dickey continued to play the Mary Kay on Nobody Left To Run With after Gibson finally came out with a Les Paul Dickey Betts signature in 2001 and a Les Paul became his number one again. But with his old 56 hardtail, the hotrail gave Dickey more of a Gibson sound. Duane Betts returned it to a single coil as he wanted it to sound like a Fender. Duane uses it on a couple of songs with Allman Betts Band as he did with Dawes. I saw the guitar at Allman Betts in late February of this year. It looks pretty back a ways but when you get close it has a ton of road wear. Someone in the 1950s and 60s played it hard for years.

Amazing....

I saw the ABB at Great Woods in Mansfield, MA, during that tour. One of the more memorable shows of the many I was lucky enough to see and the only ABB show I saw featuring Jack Pearson. It was broadcast on cable as a pay-per-view special at the time. A friend recorded a VHS tape for me while I was at the show. I still have the tape and play it occasionally when the mood hits me. I'd love to see that show get re-released as an official DVD.
Someone recently uploaded a copy to YouTube. Picture quality's a bit rough around the edges but the sound is pretty good...

Jack just owns "Dreams". I've heard Derek, Warren ... and other ABB guitarists master the song through the years, but Jack should be granted the title and deed to the song!
Re Dickey's use of Stratocasters: I once heard a story (don't know if it's true) that Dickey (ABB or solo?) at one of the Gibson Theaters (Nashville?) became so upset with either his guitar - or with Gibson, in general that he had his guitar tech bring him his Strat'. According to this legend, he played the Gibson Theater with a Fender guitar! Anybody know the gospel behind this one?

Yes Rusty Jack is the master of Dreams after Duane Allman. Back when Duane played it he was the only one to solo. One of the archival releases has a version with Duane and Berry Oakley solos for a stretch on bass.
When Derek joined in 1999, Dickey and Gregg were so inspired because he reminded them so much of Duane. But in Gregg's book Gregg and Jaimoe say Jack Pearson was the closest to Duane's style on slide. Last night while bored I listened to what I could find with Jack on YouTube and compared it to Derek Trucks and it's a yes and no deal to me. Derek Trucks does an awful lot of running his slide down the neck toward the headstock then back up. Some solos he will do that many, many times giving a "swooch" sound between several other notes and does it surprisingly often when you pay attention. Duane Allman and Jack Pearson don't have that propensity.
Haven't heard that about Dickey and the Gibson Theater. But Dickey did say in an interview I read about 1994 when asked about his sudden switch from a Les Paul to a Macarty PRS that he got angry at Gibson for ignoring him. Les Paul signature customs were coming out for players who had not played one as long as Dickey. Dickey got his first one in Detroit in 1970 and was on one for the most part through 1994. Until Goldie in 1974 Dickey had a few Les Pauls he didn't like and actually threw one across the stage because it would go out of tune. Red Dog put back in Dickey's space but the next day when Dickey saw it he beat the neck off it so Red Dog said he took that one outside and threw it in the dumpster. In 1995 he did go to a Gibson but an ES-335. Then he decided to put a hotrail in his old 56 Strat hardtail going for a Gibson sound. Dickey once said years ago he liked a Strat for rhythm guitar in the studio. Gibson finally came out with a Dickey signature custom Les Paul in 2001. But Dickey had been kicked out of the band by then.
It never set right with me when they kicked Jaimoe out in 1980 and Dickey in 2000. Dickey and Jaimoe have such unique styles that were so big in the band's sound for so long it just made the band sound different without Jaimoe and without Dickey. By then Duane and Berry were gone so now we have another out. I wish they could have handled both Jaimoe and Dickey differently or did what they did in 1976 when they were mad at Gregg. Break up!! In 1978 they got over being mad a Gregg and got back together. Dickey probably would have been back and the band back on the road in a couple of years, but Dickey sued and they paid him a pile of money and it became permanent. Warren said he would quit if he were standing in Dickey's way of returning because Dickey was such a key member but when talking with Dickey and Butch neither man wanted to play with each other again.

That was a great show. We went to a string of them around that time.
I was told that Gregg wasn't a fan of his performance. Always seemed like a logical choice for a release. But if Gregg didn't like it then I guess that ended that.

This video with Govt Mule and Jack keeps starting automatically after and it is killer too. My fav pairing with Jack is Warren. I find Jack brings out different playing and riffs from Warren. It is usually Warren having that effect on others. Love it. Every since Stephen turned me on to the 93 shows with Warren/Jack - I have been hooked.

Yes I watched the Warren/Jack video too. I remember reading an interview with Warren in the 90's and he said sometimes when he is soloing, Dickey will play some rhythm thing or Jaimoe will stick something cool in a hole that opened up in the solo and suddenly Warren will respond to that and it changes the solo and Warren will play something unexpected.
I'm bored home sheltering and yesterday watched several live Gary Moore videos. It occurred to me that Gary Moore and players such as Eddie Van Halen and Steve Via etc can smoke Warren and Jack with technical wizardry and shredding. But I can enjoy all that petal to the metal guitar playing in occasional doses. With Warren, Jack, Dickey, Duane etc I can listen and DO listen to them everyday. I never tire of Blue Sky for example. After a million times it still makes me feel good and smile.
